Mayor 'just curious' if Obama is antichrist
Source: Charlotte Observer

FORT MILL, S.C. -- Fort Mill Mayor Danny Funderburk says he was “just curious” when he forwarded a chain e-mail suggesting Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama is the biblical antichrist. “I was just curious if there was any validity to it,” Funderburk said in a telephone interview. “I was trying to get documentation if there was any scripture to back it up.”

Funderburk apparently sent the e-mail from his business account at Gastonia Sheet Metal where he works as a business agent.

The e-mail, which has circulated in the last six months since Obama secured the Democratic nomination, claims the biblical book of Revelation says the antichrist will be in his 40s and of Muslim ancestry.

There is no such scripture. And Obama is not a Muslim. But that hasn’t stopped the e-mail.

73. They are not stupid they are playing the .
race , religious or religious card over and over and over.....
 The republicans are trying to pick a some votes here and some
votes there and made the race "look" close enough to
steal again.....
Remember the republicans have a very large plan in effect all
over this country especially in the close race states to
delete , switch and steal votes from the democratic voters.
On one is pushing these facts very much but it is happening on
a very large scale......
Just keep checking Brads blog for voting corruption///

but then they know that this email is rot. But I used to have a boss who believed whatever his preacher or Faux News told him, and would never check sources or anything. Even when I showed him proof, he told me he didn't believe it because I was a woman, and his preacher and Glenn Beck were men, so they obviously were right and I was wrong.

100. There should be a sliding scale of Stupid Hurt.

Just a little stupid would hurt enough to let people know they were being stupid, so they could fix it.

Moderate to severe stupidity would hurt up to the point of disabling people from acting on their stupidity.

Really f*cking stupid, like this asshat, would just make people's heads explode.

Earth to Fundieburk: There is no such thing as "Muslim ancestry". Islam is a religion, not an ethnic group. Muslims may be of any race: Arab, Asian (Indonesia), African American (Rep. Keith Ellison), etc., etc., etc.

Oh yes, last I heard, the Antichrist was supposedly in his 30s, and from suburban Maryland. :eyes:

I don't think Funderburk is a pedophile. Is Funderburk a pedophile? Maybe Funderburk is a pedophile but if Funderburk is a pedophile, who would know that Funderburk of South Carolina is a pedophile unless some child confessed that Funderburk in South Carolina is a pedophile.

As far as I know, Funderburk of South Carolina is not a pedophile, even tho I heard someone say they were curious to know if Funderburk is a pedophile.

32. Actually it says that the "Book of Revelations" says Obama is the Antichrist.
Of course, it's Revelation (as in The Revelation of John) and trust me, NObody understands Revelation. It's acknowledged as a book of mystery and almost didn't get included in the New Testament back when it was being assembled a couple hundred years after Christ's death. John Hagee (who says the Catholic Church is the Great Whore of Babylon and some other comical assertions) doesn't understand it. Jim Jenkins and Tim LaHaye (authors of the world's worst written--IMHO--Left Behind books) don't understand Revelation. And if all the Rapture-Ready types do happen to be right, those who are "snatched up" will never know who the so-called AntiChrist is because he/she/it won't even make an appearance until the Rapture is a done deed. And as Snopes points out, the Muslim religion was not even in existence when the Book of Revelation was penned by John.

Okay, having said that, let me share that I just received that particular e-mail forwarded from a cousin of mine who happens to be Catholic and who, no matter how I try to explain it to her, INSISTS that Obama is a Muslim, he says so in his book where he declares he will never "turn his back on his people." So this latest forward (he's the Antichrist) comes with statement at the end declaring that anyone who doesn't believe this and supports Obama is STUPID. You know, "As Forrest Gump said, stupid is as stupid does."

So, here's my dilemma. After semi-fuming (rather than just ignoring) this e-mail from my cousin for the last couple of days, I am ready to let her have it in no uncertain terms. Thing is, there's only five cousins left on this side of the family and I hate to alienate them (the other three 'sides me are of the Rapture-Ready ilk), but I just feel I cannot let this go unchallenged. I fully understand she will not change her mind or GET anything I say, and if she wants to drop me from the cousin club, I guess that's okay. The final straw, I guess, was calling me stupid. I'm kinda dumb and a bit foolish about some things, but stupid I'm not and I feel a strong need to tell her how insulting and hurtful that is.

The mayor who was curious and sent out this e-mail? Now as others have pointed out---THAT'S STUPID!!

Thanks for letting me rant a bit.

Tired Old Cynic

56. Make your response reasoned and fact-based
Be sure to ask how many Obamas exist, if that means there is an equal number of Antichrists and why someone so devious wouldn't be smart enough to change his or her name to something else.

If your cousin can't handle it, it's her loss.

Good luck.

64. Thanks, ML. Great suggestion!
I'll give it my best shot. She really doesn't have a clue what's at stake here. I even ran by her the dire predictions that were rampant among the conservative evangelical fundie types I knew when JFK ran for president. A Catholic President! It must not be! Even that didn't phase her and she definitely did not make the correlation between that and what's going on with Obama now. Thing is, Obama is not Muslim--I keep saying those words--but at this point I wouldn't care if he was. My cousin is a good Catholic and a good person, but she really doesn't know the Bible the way I do. Your point is an excellent one. I'll give it a go and thanks for wishing me luck. I'll need it!

Blessings!

146. Given the response I just sent her taking her to task for her forward
you may have hit the nail on the head. I am prepared if she decides to cut the ties that bind, even though I could logically do that as well, since I had informed her I did not appreciate her forwards. Friends are great--I have several who agree with me about the abysmal mess Bush has gotten us into and who also support Obama. I told my cousin I could understand if they drummed me out of the "Cousin Club". At this point I don't much care. Sadly, a mutual cousin recently lost a grandson in the Iraq debacle, but even that did not seem to change their perspectives. It's all God's will, I guess, and of course we are fighting those evil Muslims.

Ugh. Sorry about your favorite cousin. Maybe she'll see the light one of these days. Hope springs eternal! Meanwhile, thank goodness for friends!

114. If she were a "true Christian" wouldn't she be the type to read her Bible daily?
Attend church services regularly and listen to EVERY word in the sermon?
Attend Bible Study classes that cover all of the Bible?

Or does she just attend church because it makes her look good?

Just advise her to get her Bible out and read Revelation 13 and then get back to you and tell you what it says about Muslims or any other claim in the email.

39. Th e funny thing about this is
The belief that the AntiChrist is a Muslim and in his 40's comes from the teachings of Nastradamus not the Bible. If these people were truthfully Christians that take the Bible literally, then they shouldn't even be looking at Nastradamus for he was known to be a seer or psychic if you will. To be a Christian and look into seers,psychics,fortune tellers, etc is blasphamy. This is hilarious. The Bible states that people will be fooled by the AntiChrist and we won't know who he is. With so many people pointing fingers at Obama, that just proves that it is not him. I would place my money on one of their fundy preachers that they so adore. This is all ridiculous. The only reason that I know any of this is because I was raised in the South and have heard this crap all of my life.

74. You mean like how Reagan employed astrologers?
I always wondered why he was such a favorite of the "Christian" political movement (which has nothing to do with the Christian religion), as he showed no sign of any Christian leanings.

In my lifetime, Jimmy Carter and maybe John Kennedy were the only Presidents who acted like Christians. Barack will be the third.

Has in illustriously ignorant list of claims to fame. Wiki it for yourself. There must be some nice, decent people who live there. However, judging from its own self-promotion, it's a repulsive little spot on the map with an aptly repulsive little mayor.

Someone somewhere once said that Mayor Funderburk is a pedophile, a rapist and a school playground exhibitionist who hangs out in dying shrubbery. I'm just curious...anybody know if this is as true as it sounds? It MIGHT be an exaggeration or something, but as far as I KNOW it isn't. (Pssst! I am a DEIST. And being a Deist, I don't care to interpret scripture in the same sense as Christians do, but I do read it, and have a very good Reverend/Theologian friend who I have on many occasions, chatted with about things like the bible... I am almost tempted to say HE HIMSELF is a Deist because of what he had learned from his THEOLOGICAL teachings.

But anyways, what I had learned from the reverend, and this can be verified by the CATHOLIC CHURCH themselves, is that the book of Revelations is NOT a book about the future, or anti-Christs, or what have you, it is actually a reference to the ROMANS. Specifically, 666 for instance, is a reference to NERO. Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero

I find it absolutely absurd that people would distort the bible in such away, whether they are using a figure like Obama, or any other person to gain any kind of support from the fools, and the actual religious God fearing types.

I might be a Deist, but even I can appreciate the bible for what it really is.

EDIT: for further reference, try the VATICAN, look at the FOOTNOTES, SPECIFICALLY FOR REVELATIONS 13:18 !! : http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0839/__P12W.HTM

You need to be familiar with something called the NICENE CREED, which was basically a council which scrapped the parts of the bible it didn't want, and gave other parts of it "ALLEGED" credibility, one of those being, the "DIVINITY" of Christ. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11049a.htm

Further reading and research will show you, that EVEN THE CHURCH THEMSELVES, do not buy into the whole "DIVINITY" and "REVELATIONS" hocus pocus scripture that people interpret as the "WORDS OF THE GOOD LORD".

It's not so much Christianity I have a problem with, but rather those who try and interpret it for their own selfish reasons.

I think some famous guy said that too, don't remember who it was quite off hand... Edit, I think it may have been Gandhi.., but anyways. A TRUE Christian/Theologian knows the correct interpretations of the bible... dare I say specifically "CATHOLICS" since Catholicism is the oldest known form of Christianity. But again, Catholics also interpret things different, that is why we have protestants... but TRUE CHRISTIAN THEOLOGIANS know what to interpret out of, but most important, HOW to interpret, Christian theology....EVEN US DEISTS !!

Here it is:

Subject: FW: Lord Help Us

This will make you re-think: A Trivia question in Sunday School:
How long is the beast allowed to have authority in Revelation?

Revelation Chapter 13 tells us it is 42 months, and you know what that is.
Almost a four-year term of a Presidency.

All I can say is "Lord, Have mercy on us!"

According to The Book of Revelation the anti-Christ is: The anti-Christ will
be a man, in his 40's, of MUSLIM descent, who will deceive the nations with
persuasive language, and have a MASSIVE Christ-like appeal....the prophecy says
that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace,
and when he is in power, will destroy everything..

Do we recognize this description??

I STRONGLY URGE each one of you to post this as many times as
you can! Each opportunity that you have to send it to a friend or media outlet..do it!
I refuse to take a chance on this unknown candidate who came out of nowhere.

From: Dr. John Tisdale
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friends,
As I was listening to a news program last night, I watched in horror as Barack Obama made the statement with pride. . ."we are no longer a Christian nation; we are now a nation of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, . . " As with so many other statements I've heard him (and his wife) make, I never thought I'd see the day that I'd hear something like that from a presidential candidate in this nation. To think our forefathers fought and died for the right for our nation to be a Christian nation--and to have this man say with pride that we are no longer that. How far this nation has come from what our founding fathers intended it to be.
I hope that each of you will do what I'm doing now--send your concerns, written simply and sincerely, to the Christians on your email list. With God's help, and He is still in control of this nation and all else, we can show this man and the world in November that we are, indeed, still a Christian nation!
Please pray for our nation
77. A couple of points of clarification
The Book of Revelation is an apocalyptic book but it contains some elements of prophesy. It could therefore contain a description of the antichrist that a Muslim would fit. However, if it were interpreted to mean that the antichrist will be a Muslim, Muhammad or Bin Laden would be the closest fits and Muhammad would be a stretch.
On the other hand, GWB is a possible fit for the Little Beast but I have never heard the fundies suggest this.
What I am waiting for is for someone to match Palin with the whore Babylon the Great.
The good news is that anyone who buys into the "Obama is a Muslim and the antichrist" BS wasn't going to vote for him anyway.
92. "Left Behind" Authors: Obama Not the Antichrist - WP
By Michelle Boorstein
This may be a first for a presidential campaign: A debate about whether one of the candidates is the Antichrist.
The latest round began with the McCain campaign Web ad released earlier this month called "The One." The spot includes clips of Obama seeming to imply he is God's choice, shots of Charlton Heston, stairs in the clouds (to heaven?) and images that some say are meant to mimic those in the wildly popular "Left Behind" book series about the end of the world that feature the Antichrist.
Some Obama supporters pounced on the ad, which was released in early August, saying it deliberately was meant to stoke a debate that's been going on among some Christians for months: Whether Obama is the Antichrist.
"This was not some YouTube video put together in someone's basement. It was a professionally and carefully produced ad that had a much more sinister subtext that millions of Americans will pick up on," said the Eleison Group, which advises Democratic candidates on faith issues, in a statement. "This is the use of religion at its very worst in politics because it is an attempt to subtly and perhaps even subconsciously play on some of the deepest fears of millions of evangelical Americans."
Despite months of Antichrist chatter on the right, from the questions posed on the talk show of popular conservative host Glenn Beck to the horned-O coffee mugs, stickers and T-shirts for sale from conservative Web site RedState.com, the McCain campaign says its ad is being taken too seriously.
more...
I was reminded that SC was the last holdout of the declaration of Independence, and would have voted it down without the removal of wording about slavery. Since it has been 50 years back to high school for me, I forgive myself for not remembering that. The good thing was that I met an elderly gent and his granddaughter, who said he was an Obama supporter. I was there with my brother and sister-in laws, who are really good people despite being republicans. They seemed crestfallen to hear that , and and started to browbeat me about how all the financial mess ,guess what, was the fault of the Clinton admin. It is so sad that some people , who are basically decent can not admit when their view of the world is so wrong.
106. The man's a sneaky, backstabbing, cowardly liar. Just look at those obnoxious lies
he made to cover up his filthy attempted assault by "scripture" on Obama.
~snip~
Funderburk says he was “just curious” when he forwarded a chain e-mail suggesting Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama is the biblical antichrist. “I was just curious if there was any validity to it,” Funderburk said in a telephone interview. “I was trying to get documentation if there was any scripture to back it up.”
Nonsense, he KNEW there's nothing which could remotely resemble anything of the kind.
~snip~
When asked if he believed Obama was the antichrist, Funderburk replied, “I’ve got absolutely no way of knowing that.”
Funderburk said it “probably does give that impression” that he believed the e-mail was true “but that was not my intent.”
The mayor said it was a mistake not to include a subject line when he forwarded the chain e-mail.
“I am curious about current events and their connection to the Bible,” he said.
~~~~~

Who would even speak to someone this stupid and treacherous? The idea of VOTING for a dirty blooming idiot like Blubberbutt to represent a town is out of the question!

111. This is America deep in the grip of fear, ignorance,racism and religious intolerance
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 07:15 AM by workinclasszero
As a christian, this religious intolerance and out right lying about Obama sickens me deeply.

This is what happens when people turn their churches into republican attack centers. Do you suppose these people would be attacking a white candidate in this way? I highly doubt it.

These religious attacks are total lies. "biblical book of Revelation says the antichrist will be in his 40s and of Muslim ancestry." That is a total lie as the piece points out.

However it does say in the Bible that Satan is the father of all lies, so what does it say about all these so called pious, religious people spreading these sickening false lies?

The Republican preachers of hate have sent their vile lies wrapped falsely in the flag and the Bible to their ignorant followers and they have swallowed it whole.

These are the same people that virtually worship George Bush as a "man of God". If you've ever seen the Bible Camp documentary, you'll know what I mean.

They don't get brain washing just on Sunday, the rest of the week belongs to hate radio.

Limbaugh, Hannity and a legion of other lesser nazi have done their dark work well....

God help America. I sometimes think we are desending back to the Dark Ages in this country.

116. Since the book of Revelation was written about 600 years before the foundation of Islam
how could it have said that the Antichrist would have Muslim ancestry?

False witness includes making up shit just to see what happens, I believe.

139. The Bible was written before the knowledge of this country..
and revalations mentioned the region he would come from. I believe they said Europe, not 100% on that but.. What I dont get is how can people believe this stuff? It was written before science, before America was discovered, before the knowledge of microbes gravity or our senses. So can we really believe that the "anti-christ" is coming. Better yet why?
