Biden speech to take hard hit at McCain
Source: POLITICO

Charlotte, N.C.—Joe Biden will deliver a high-profile speech intended as the first attack in a sustained anti-McCain offensive in a new speech called "Bush 44" he'll deliver tomorrow in the key battleground state of Michigan.

While the lines of attack have long been drawn—as the title indicates, Biden will assert that a McCain presidency would amount to a third Bush term and will focus on the Republican's domestic policies and harsh campaign tactics—the new speech will be more detailed, comprehensive and aggressive, a campaign aide told Politico.

Biden will deliver the speech in St. Clair Shores, Mich., which is located in Macomb County—the area whose voters inspired Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg to coin the term “Reagan Democrats.” The RealClearPolitics polling average shows Obama with a 2-point lead in the state, which Democrats won by slim margins in the last two elections.

The speech is touted as matching the aggressive new strategy the Obama campaign has promised to unleash in the remaining days of the campaign to counter the recent poll gains of John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin.

And next Monday, Biden will deliver another high-profile speech, this one a critique of McCain's foreign-policy views.

1. Oh Lord, why isn't he attacking Palin? That's HIS job, not Obama's.
It really worries me that Biden is refusing to be the attack dog on her because how it'll make him look, just as Edwards was reluctant to attack for Kerry because he had aspirations after 2004. Good Lord. It's a simple playbook, can't this campaign read?

7. Biden is doing what the Obama campaign is telling him to do.
It's not up to Biden, it's up to the campaign.

Unless you have inside info that supports your statement that Biden is "refusing to be the attack dog on her", it's not fair to hold him solely responsible for the approach.

9. I see nothing wrong with Biden making attacks on both. Why should Biden hold back on McCain?
Biden knows his foreign policy stuff inside out while McCain keeps toting the BushCo line. Biden should let loose on both McCain and Palin.

10. Biden's Job Is To Further Obama's Presidential Bid
Gov. Palin did a pretty good job of shooting herself in the foot with the ABC interview with Charlie Gibson. Let her defend that performance for awhile. The last thing Biden should do right now is to bolster her standing. This is a very good use of Biden's time and talent. I applaud this move.

11. Why Should He Attack Palin?
Edited on Sun Sep-14-08 10:01 PM by iamjoy
Now I've been guilty of it too, but why do we keep focusing on Palin? I've come to realize the best thing is probably to ignore her. If we focus on her and draw attention to her negatives, it will only make some people feel more sympathetic to her. We should keep the focus on McSame and his recycled Bush policies.

We need to let people know a vote for McSame is buying a pig in a poke - let's not discuss lipstick shades.

(you all know the policies are the pig)

18. No one should attack Palin ... she will self-destruct
Attacking Palin has given her a high profile and brought out fundies. It is about McLame and "the economy stupid"

We should attack Palin by ignoring her, by saying she is irrelevant. Let the comedians tear her to shreds.

We should be attacking McLame -- over and over and over till he is thoroughly exposed and discredited.

27. I believe you are correct - she's going to turn herself into an albatross

She's so damned dumb and full of herself, that it's better for her to be out front making an ass of herself than playing the "sexist attack" card.

21. no, it's a job best left to 527s and Palin herself
Edited on Mon Sep-15-08 12:19 AM by 0rganism
She cannot be attacked on matters of policy. Period. End of story. The less she knows and the more she's called on it, the stronger her support among the GOP base. They're know-nothings, so is she, big win for the GOP.

Biden's a policy wonk, and needs to go after someone with political credentials. That would be McCain. Kick him in the metaphorical nuts by calling him out on how he feels about whole congregations of Palin's supporters praying for his quick presidential death.

Meanwhile, have unaffiliated orgs go after her as being strange and different. Emphasize how powerful she was as mayor and governor, and how badly she abused that power, and how she neglected her family while doing so. Start rumors about her militant proto-lesbianism, and how she was a charter member of the branch davidians. Hell, the media whores can't turn around within a mile of her without tripping over another scandal, she could very well self-destruct at some point.

But above all don't push Biden (or Obama) into playing her game. Sen. Biden's a reasonable man, and her appeal is entirely reptilian cortex. She'll come off as familiar and forthright, he'll look like a boor for taking her to task.

Attacking McCain/Bush's failed policies and ignoring the Alaskan asshole will help make her irrelevant.

25. The media and our surrogates are attacking her for us
Our ticket risks appearing "Palin-panicky" if they so much as mention her. Biden is too much of a heavy-weight to waste on Palin. He'll be picking on someone his own size here.

28. He'll get his shot at her during the debate; otherwise, IGNORE HER.
McCain's the top of the ticket; we need to get the spotlight OFF her, except for when she's answering questions or trying to present her "credentials." We DON'T need to see her spouting her canned little GOP talking points.

I think it's great that he's going after McLame - Failin' will fail all on her own, I have a feeling.

3. I just moved from Michigan because of the economic hardships
going on there. It's really bad with the auto industry in total decline. How anybody could even consider McCain during this time has to be nuts or extremely racist. The Mayor of Detroit was just tossed out of office for being a complete ass and claims of racism were flying back and forth causing dissension. I'm hoping things are starting to settle and people vote for the right ticket.

12. Why would anyone in American vote McCain???
It really boggles my mind that ANYONE would vote for McCain at this point. Seriously! If at this point, you are planning to cast a vote for McCain/Palin, the magnet in your moral compass is fucking defective.

14. Double Digit IQers Are Who They Are Courting
Edited on Sun Sep-14-08 10:25 PM by The Shadow
Intelligent enough to vote but not bright enough to be concerned with real life issues.I am serious here. There are literally millions of these people in America. All they know is they would never vote for a Democrat, let alone a candidate that isn't..well, white (sorry for even saying that, because I simply see Obama as a man with ideals and integrity). I have read several books about these people, one was about a massacre in Vietnam and the underlying reason for it to have occurred was determined to have been the double-digit IQ of the soldiers involved.

the country with the world's biggest superiority complex is catering to the desires of the people who are least like to see the big picture, much less understand it. Brilliant!

15. Obama/Biden should bring the discussion back to McCain
and pretty much ignore Palin. You also trivialize Palin and make her a nobody, an afterthought.

When the focus is brought squarely on McCain, the GOP doesn't look as good.

I think he's pretty confident that Palin will fall apart during the VP debate, and it will give him the opportunity to close the door on her.

24. He must go after McCain
That is the person who we are up against. I believe that the honeymoon for Palin will be over very soon. As more and more people learn about her ideas and legal woes, she will self destruct.Let the media take care of her. The campaign needs to stand firmly against McCain. Joe just needs to show his expertise and not talk down or belittle Palin in the debates and let the people see the difference between a well informed, intelligent person and a frivilous soundbite such as Palin. She makes so many ignorant baseless points that surely people will see through her.
