Sarah Palin to be energy independence chief in John McCain's government
Source: Telegraph

The Republican presidential candidate will make his running mate the public face of the country's drive for energy independence, according to a McCain campaign official.

Mr McCain, whose selection of Mrs Palin has electrified Republican supporters, wants to capitalise on her expertise in the oil and gas sector while governor of Alaska. He believes that her record of taking on oil company chiefs will help convince the public that his government would not be in the pocket of energy fat cats, a perception that has damaged George W.Bush's poll ratings.

The move would give Mr McCain political cover to resume widespread domestic drilling for oil, even in areas of environmental fragility.

Mrs Palin backs drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), which Mr McCain has previously opposed. Should he decide to reverse that position he will use Mrs Palin to make the case that it is necessary.

The campaign official said: "The Democrats say that Governor Palin is inexperienced, but she has vast experience in the energy sector. She will be at the forefront of the push for energy independence. She's popular and she's very persuasive." A Republican Party official, who has discussed Mrs Palin's role with members of Mr McCain's team, added: "She can say: 'I'm from Alaska. I know all about this and I support drilling, even in ANWR."

For Christ's sakes, America, please see through this ridiculous shit.

The idea of this oil industry whore overseeing "energy independence" is obscene.

21. They try to project things that happen naturally in Alaska as her "experience."
She's a foreign policy whiz. Her state sets closer to Russia than any other state.

She has executive experience. She was a mayor of Podunk, Alaska and chaired her local PTA!

She knows energy independence. Her state produces a shitload of oil!

God help this country if this rationalization is what propels this ticket to the White House. If it does, this country's even dumber than I thought.

5. LBN is turning into GDP
Obama said this, McCain said that, Palin did the other. All just campaign antics.

How are any of these numerous campaign threads in LBN considered news?

It is hard trying to sift through the campaign garbage trying to find out what in happening in the world. These days one might as well turn on Fox/CNN rather than go to DU's LBN if one is looking for news.

9. As Chris Matthews said last week what is more important
a presidential campaign that will affect us for a lifetime or a hurricane that is a story for a day or two?

And not every DU'er is in GDP nor do stories stay on top for long there. If its in a news source and not in opinion then and its today then it can be LBN IMHO.

11. Have fun with it then
LBN used to be a place to get news. Campaign threads one can get anywhere. There are thousands of sites to get the campaign garbage being posted in LBN these days.

But, hey, your choice.

Edited on Sat Sep-06-08 03:05 PM by RamboLiberal
I surf daily probably about 20 MSM sites. I don't depend on LBN for my news. Right now the biggest LBN story is the election and rightfully so IMHO. This is a political site you know.

18. Then DU should stop bothering to seperate forums
LBN is 90% campaign threads
GD is 90% campaign threads
GD-P is 100% campaign threads

Why not just merge all three together and give up the farce that DU wants people to post anything other than campaign news in a forum for real news. Just have one forum and stop trying to fool people into thinking they can get news at DU?

Palin is WORSE than Cheney. I think what is happening here is that Dick will be the head of the Military "Government" and Palin, since hubby works for BP, will rape and pillage the resources while shooting Polar Bears for sport. We are in serious trouble people. We can make jokes but we will loose America %100 when they succeed by cheating, lying, etc.... Something must be done. I am getting a stomach ache.

I realize things like out of wedlock pregnancy can happen in any family. But this is the logic the conservatives have shoved in the country's faces for the last 30 years or so, and it's time we call them out on their hypocrisy.

24. Aw, no, Bristol wasn't promiscuous; she was simply being a teen-ager.
But the truth is that there are a lot of family issues that Sarah Palin attempts to control by abusing her power. What's she going to do, twist Chavez's arm? Spit in Putin's eye? Imagine her talking with the Saudis. Good gawd. On the other hand, all she craves is power, and to be around power. Doing the right thing for America isn't on her agenda.

36. But they promised oil tomorrow ..

Or the two days after the day before yesterday. Of course, we all know they have lots of leases and proven reserves that they refuse to bring to market. Why would they? They're making record profits. More supply would drive down their profit margins.

Her experience is in taxing the oil and gas industry which of course passed along the taxes to the rest of us at the pump and in our utility bills. But, of course, the Alaskans did benefit. I would say she's not the brightest light bulb but Sarah Palin really is not even a light bulb. She seems to be missing the filament. Which seems to be the same problem with John McCain. Between the two of them no doubt Alaska will become a vast wilderness of pipelines along with our beaches after they open up the coastal areas under a federal presidential order, no doubt declaring an "emergency" which will simply be the "emergency" of opening everything up before Congress can even attempt to stop them, and we will get hit with higher prices at the pump and in our utility bills after they decide to tax the oil and gas industry to pay for the economic disasters of George W Bush and Bill Clinton and George HW Bush and their King Midas aka Alan Greenspan. The only gold I can see that came out of all three administrations under Alan Greenspan's direction of the Federal Reserve been fool's gold. And even that is more plated than actual ore. Does anyone realize we are no longer solvent?

There is a little ray of hope. They do offer a little bit of sense of a return to "by the people, for the people" although really it's "by some of the people, for some of the people" and I suspect we will be better off with "by the corporation, for the corporation."

Pray for a massive flu outbreak that only affects Republicans on election day.

29. oil whore (like cheney)
I dugg this one and added this:

she's just an oil whore like all republicans and like all of them, she lies and they know she lies, about cutting waste. They say one thing and do another, decimate the earth's resources, and ride to wealth and glory on the backs' of the people. Nothing new here -- she's just hiding beneath the veneer of a failed beauty queen, which makes it momentarily interesting until you realize you're looking at Dick Cheney. And hence, another 4 years of BUSH/CHENEY. Apparently, there are still some "people" in this country who think they did a good enough job so why not? LOL. Yup. Banks failing even as we sit here, unemployment higher again, people losing their jobs and homes -- but then, you all know you're a bunch of whiners and pussies according to the republicans. get up on your own two feet, says the party who got where they are on your back.

I say to them, you get on your own two feet and march on down to the local courtroom and turn yourselves in. Stop running. Oh, and it would be great if you all would pretend to care about Democracy the tiniest bit, at least before you get into office, by actually putting on some show of letting the empty oil whore talking head answer some pre-rehearsed questions. I seriously have to wonder at just how good your show is going to be since you aren't even marching her out to your buddies at Faux.

The puppet masters are at it again and the crowd eats it up-- Hey, Republican voters, don't get used again.

I dare say the bigoil guys need a jolly good laugh from time to time and Palin's 'vast experience' probably tickles them somewhere.

33. So what renewable, alternative energy projects has she funded, so far, in Alaska?
From what I can tell... zippo. And she spent the windfall oil royalties by sending checks to the citizens of Alaska, rather than investing in those alternative energy projects that would lead to real energy independence.

35. So she'll replace Cheney !!!

Yes, we all know how the "energy policy" meetings turned out.

Just remember everyone, the Republicans have no policy for drilling. They have a policy for leasing. The Democrats tried to push a "drill it or lose it" law on leases and it was blocked. So it's the Democrats that are for increasing oil supplies. The Republicans are just trying to give away leases so the oil oligarchs can lock up the supply and charge whatever they like.
