45-nation group OKs landmark US-India nuke deal

VIENNA, Austria - Nations that supply nuclear material and technology overcame fierce obstacles Saturday and approved a landmark U.S. plan to engage in atomic trade with India — a deal that reverses more than three decades of American policy.

The Nuclear Suppliers Group, which governs the legal world trade in nuclear components and know-how, signed off on the deal after three days of contentious talks and some concessions to countries fearful it could set a dangerous precedent.

"Today we have reached a landmark decision to allow for civilian nuclear trade with India," John Rood, acting U.S. undersecretary of state for arms control issues, told reporters.

"This is a historical moment for the NSG, for India and for India's relations with the rest of the world," he said.

Of all the other policies that Dubya has fucked up, this one will be his legacy. This deal will lift millions of Indians out of poverty and make electricity and everything that comes with it available to them.

I cannot agree with * on anything else but this deal was visionary and will bring US/India relationship closer and create a counterweight to China's potential aggression. It will reduce global warming and bring down oil prices as the demand created for oil in India will be reduced.

1. This is not going to go over well with Pakistan
Edited on Sat Sep-06-08 08:32 AM by FreakinDJ
Who is now harboring Osama Bin Laudin and Al Quaida with a safe haven.

Pakistan also has a 1/2 million man standing army and a nuclear arsenal

2. Pakistan is a wrong ally for the US
The US should stop caring about what Pakistan thinks and stop all military aid. The Taliban problem's root is in Pakistan. Stop aid to Pakistan and the Taliban (which are 70% active duty Paki military) will wither away. There is virtually no support for the Taliban amongst Afghani people.

Pakistan is a tinpot country with military dictatorship (overt or covert) which tries to gain importance by exporting terror.

The best solution for Pakistani menace would be balkanization into 4 or 5 small countries.

5. Cooperation? hahahahahahahaha
How and when will we realize that Pakistani Intelligence (ISI) worked hand in hand with Al Q'aeda and Taliban? When will be truly realize that Musharraf (the former head of the ISI) was complicit in 9/11?

In 2000, and Indian Airlines jetliner was hijacked to Kandahar. The MO of that hijacking was a rehearsal for 9/11. The same exact protocol was followed by the 9/11 hijackers in taking control of the plane.

9. 3,000 to 5,000 direct jobs and 10,000 to 15,000 indirect jobs in the United States
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/07/world/asia/07india.html?hp

"India plans to import at least eight 1,000 megawatt nuclear reactors by 2012, according to the United States State Department. Even if the United States wins bids for just two of these reactors, the deals would create 3,000 to 5,000 direct jobs and 10,000 to 15,000 indirect jobs in the United States, the State Department has said."

This is a win win deal, and we should all celebrate.

India will become less dependent on Fossil fuels, and will be able to grow economically.

US will export nuclear power plants to India, thus creating jobs for Americans.

16. Bush's legacy: nasty threats, misinformation, and intimidation
From the NYT article:
'Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Washington-based Arms Control Association, accused the U.S. delegation of resorting to "some nasty threats, misinformation about positions and intimidation to try to wear down" the three holdout countries. U.S. officials had no immediate comment.'

This is not something to celebrate.

17. Hmm - the paragraph you quoted has been deleted from the NYT website
This is weird, they removed that paragraph from the article.
It was there, because searching google news for the phrase "India plans to import at least eight 1,000 megawatt nuclear reactors by 2012" finds it in the same link you gave:

11. Rice presses Congress to OK India nuclear deal (AP)
By MATTHEW LEE – 2 hours ago

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pressed Congress to approve a nuclear deal with India after the agreement won the endorsement Saturday from nations that supply nuclear material and technology.

"The main thing is that the international work is now done. I certainly hope we can get it through. It'd be a huge step for the U.S.-India relationship," the top U.S. diplomat told reporters as she traveled from Tunisia to Algeria during a trip to North Africa.

"It would be good to get everything finalized. I hope we can get it through Congress," Rice added.

But time is drawing near for U.S. lawmakers to consider the deal. Congress has only a few weeks of work in September before it is scheduled to break for the rest of the year to campaign for November elections ...

12. India retains ‘legal right’ to test: Kakodkar
Sep 6th, 2008 | By Sindh Today | Category: India

New Delhi, Sep 6 (IANS) Hours after the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) granted historic waiver to India, Atomic Energy Commission chief Anil Kakodkar Saturday underlined that New Delhi has not compromised its ‘legal’ right to conduct nuclear tests to get crucial exemption from the nuclear cartel.

'India’s ‘legal’ right to conduct nuclear tests has been fully preserved. We have not made any commitment in this regard to gain the waiver from the NSG,'Kakodkar told reporters here.

‘There is no explicit mention of (nuclear) testing (in the NSG waiver),’ he said while stressing that the NSG waiver met all requirements of the Department of Atomic Energy.

‘We have made no legal commitment (on nuclear tests),’ Kakodkar said. He reiterated that India has already made a unilateral, voluntary moratorium on conducting atomic test ...

13. Well, whadya know?
Commander Bunnypants managed to get one thing right in 8 friggin' years. This is great news for India and great news for the US. India is the world's largest and most vibrant democracy; all of the effort we have spent ingratiating ourselves with China would have been so much better spent allying our interests, political and financial, with India.

India is the future.

The policy was that nations won't get advanced nuclear power technology if they develop nuclear weapons, but now they can expect to.

15. India is a special case...
this sort of a deal is unlikely to happen again.

India has never proliferated, never obtained technology illegally and has never attacked any country in its history. It has 1/6th of the world's population and has very legitimate energy needs for its burgeoning economy.

No other country can make a similar case.

18. India is one of the great hopes for the future.
Supplying them with the means to expand their economic engine with non-GW energy will benefit the entire globe. Imagine all the business we do with China being done with a great forward-thinking democracy, whose most revered 20th century icon is Gandhi instead of Mao.
