An RNC outfit for Cindy McCain: $300,000
Source: UPI

ST. PAUL, Minn., Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Potential U.S. first lady Cindy McCain sported about $300,000 in designer clothes and accessories at one of the GOP convention sessions, fashion experts said.

Vanity Fair totaled up the duds McCain wore during Tuesday's session of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., and found the Oscar de la Renta frock McCain wore was $3,000; the Chanel watch, $4,500; shoes, $600, and a four-strand pearl necklace, between $11,000 and $25,000, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

Rounding out the ensemble were 3-carat diamond earrings, a mere $280,000. The newspaper said the jewelry estimates were based on the assumption that the gems were, ah, real.

First lady Laura Bush, by comparison, wore an outfit that night estimated to cost between $3,000 and $4,000, the newspaper reported.

Michelle Obama's Fashion Home Run

The would-be first lady's fashion flair is already grabbing attention -- she's being closely watched as a possible budding fashion icon -- and most observers the outfit she selected for the big event clicked.

Among those whose keen eyes were trained on Michelle is Laura Schwartz. The dress was striking, Schwartz observed, but very calming in color -- a shade of blue-green, which evokes calm and trust.

Maria Pinto, a designer in the Obamas' hometown of Chicago, created the dress. Pinto built her company from the ground up and is another Chicago success story. Schwartz says Michelle may have picked her as her designer in part because Pinto also represents achieving the American dream, which is what Michelle wanted to portray herself and Barack as having done. Michelle has used Pinto for a long time.

The large pendant on the dress, Schwartz adds, came straight from Michelle's jewelry box, and was reminiscent of Barack's rising sun campagn logo. The pendant was placed over Michelle's heart, so it might have symbolized that her speech was coming straight from her heart.

Michelle Obama's DNC floral dress was Thakoon:

The whole wide world is officially a red carpet. The dress worn by Michelle Obama at last night's convention is no secret because publicists are alerting press to the designer: Thakoon. The aspiring first lady smartly opted to wear a sophisticated and fierce print -- red signifies strength and confidence -- with a retro lady-like cut. (The look on the right is from Thakoon's fall 2008 collection. Obama wore the Radzimir Kimono dress from the pre-spring 2009 collection.)

Want to own a Thakoon and campaign for yourself? Right now, this similar Thakoon floral "Inside-Out" dress on the right is available at eLuxury.com for ((((($1,250.)))))

1. Michelle looks up to date
Cindy McCain looks like a 1950s dress pattern cover. Seriously, it looks like she still thinks 1955 was the height of fashion.

2. Cindy's outfit...
You've got to be kidding me.

Are you really so desperate for something to attack with that you need to look at Cindy's outfit?

Jesus...

18. She looked worse ...

Actually, age (and lots of plastic surgery) has treated Cindy quite well. I was SHOCKED to see how she looked during her dress. She looked thin and gangly, her hair was horrible and the color of her dress matched McCain's crappy green backgrounds in emotional tone.

Who is her fashion consultant, they're HORRIBLE!!! How could such high priced consultants fuck up in presenting the McCain's so poorly yet present the Palins so beautifully??? Hmmmmm..... ba-bump, ba-bump, ba-bump, beeeeeeeeeeeeeep!!!!

10. I too, would enjoy
Hearing what you had thought of her speech.

As for the 300K outfit.....sure looks class-less when the next day we hear of terrible job loss numbers/unemployment/foreclosure news.

21. That's exactly what Cindy's dress looks like!
It's called a shirtwaist dress. I hated those dresses.

7. Who's the elitist?
They blame Obama for eating arugula, which costs a couple of bucks, but they wear quarter million dresses. Pathetic.

9. Fiscal Responsibility
If any politician or family member can spend $300,000 on clothing for the convention, do you really want this person running the country? Do you know how many homeless Americans could be fed for $300,000? You might think it's nothing that Cindy McCain spent so much money on her clothing, but I think it is wreckless disregard for the middle class of America. Shame on the purchaser and shame on the designer. Your clothing stinks.

11. Did you stop to think...
that maybe the outfit she wore was on loan from the designers? You know, just like they do with actors at the oscars?

Even if it wasn't on loan, the money that was spent on the outfit was hers to spend...not yours to decide that it could have been put to better use some other way.

14. In contrast Michelle's dress for the View cost around $199.00 and looked like a million!
Isn't it always the way that some women can put a dress on off the rack and look fabulous, and other women can spend hundreds of thousands and look completely devoid of style?

Cindy McCain may be a nice person... I don't know much about her, though I read a very good article on her and their house in Arizona, years ago in Architectural Digest. She seems like a nice enough person, but she seems incredibly clueless about her appearance. She always looks so out of place.

15. Cindy - girl to girl.
The pearl necklace was a BIG MISTAKE. It highlighted your neck which is showing the effects of that Arizona sun. Sunscreen, Cindy. A nice phenol peel to fix the damage and then sunscreen - lots of it.

Michele Obama doesn't have to spend $300,000 on an outfit to speak with her supporters - we've already seen that she looks and IS fabulous, no matter what she puts on. Why the need for all the adornment and gilt, Cindy? What is it meant to hide?
