Iraq to reopen Abu Ghraib prison, include museum
Source: Reuters

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq plans to renovate and reopen Abu Ghraib prison, the notorious site of executions and torture under Saddam Hussein and later of a U.S. prisoner abuse scandal.

The sprawling prison on Baghdad's western outskirts, which has not been used as a prison since 2006, will also feature a museum of crimes committed under former leader Saddam Hussein, government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said on Wednesday.

"Iraq's cabinet has agreed to the Defence Ministry's proposal ... to renovate Abu Ghraib prison ... with the reservation of part of the prison as a museum of crimes of the previous regime," Dabbagh said in a statement.

Abu Ghraib was a byword for the brutality of Saddam Hussein's reign, and in 2004 the prison gained further notoriety when photos emerged of U.S. soldiers abusing Iraqi detainees.

...

It was also unclear whether the museum would also document prisoner abuse by U.S. forces. Dabbagh's office was not immediately available for comment.

3. Now ain't that interesting; "executions and torture" under Hussein, but just "abuse" under bUsh.
EXECUTIONS AND TORTURE under AMERICAN CONTROL aka GEORGE W. bUSH.

In fact, MORE Iraqis imprisoned under GEORGE W. bUSH than were ever imprisoned under Hussein.

And like it or not, that's a FACT.

4. You could also say...
that more Germans were killed by the U.S. than the nazis. Saddam Hussein was a horrible, horrible despot. Just ask my Kurdish friends. Bushler is a dangerous, incompetent boob. Neither is mutually exclusive.

THE STRUGGLE FOR IRAQ: DETENTION; Pentagon Was Blindsided by Bush Pledge to Raze Prison

By ELISABETH BUMILLER
Published: May 27, 2004
On Monday night, President Bush made the dramatic announcement that the United States would demolish Abu Ghraib prison and build a modern maximum-security center in Baghdad to replace it. But on Wednesday, Pentagon officials said the president's words had taken them by surprise, and they scrambled without success to come up with details of the plan.

''This office was not aware of any plans to raze Abu Ghraib or build another prison,'' said a Pentagon spokesman who insisted that he not be identified because he did not want to be seen as contradicting the president.

A senior Pentagon official said that any plans would have to be discussed with a new Iraqi government, as Mr. Bush himself stipulated in his announcement, and that in any case razing the prison could not happen quickly.

''It's just an idea the president came up with,'' the official said. ''The Iraqis could decide they don't want to tear it down. It's not ours to tear down. It will be some time before I can give you the kind of details you want.''
