Obama (Camp) Response to Palin
Source: TIME - Mark Halperin

“Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain’s commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush’s failed economic policies — that’s not the change we need, it’s just more of the same,” said Bill Burton, Obama Campaign Spokesman.

1. This choice is a serious reflection on John McCain's
judgment -- or lack thereof, more accurately. Sarah's okay as a governor of a state of 600,000 population, but a heartbeat away from the presidency? No f****** way.

7. his "choice" is politically motivated
has nothing to do with "country first" - it's mccain-GOP first.

if Clinton were the dem candidate - would mccain have found a black man as VP pick?

Did anyone else see that picture of her with a fish. What a Nazi nut! She is nothing but more of the same failed policies looking out for the oil industry. She has to be and will be stopped. Just because she has a vagina does mean we will vote for her. She is a hate-filled fraud. Biden will rip her lungs out in the debates.

Yeah, I just noticed the McCain campaign theme of "Country First" and immediately began wondering if he valued country over party exactly why did he avidly support Bush during both of his elections and during his 8 years in office?

Let's see...........Sarah Palin standing proudly shoulder to shoulder with Ahmadinejad..........can't visualize that either.........Okay, Sarah Palin sitting at a table discussing global poverty with Medvedev! Nah, even worse......All I can see this woman doing is what she has been doing........nothing. I bet Republicans are quacking in their boots right now!! Imagine little Sarah sitting down to debate BIDEN, of all people. He is going to chew her up and spit her out!

still, that's not gonna stop my enjoyment of watching it go down mind you.... :D

35. That's it exactly.
I don't have anything at all against Sarah Palin as governor of Alaska. She has been a breath of fresh air after the horrible Frank Murkowski, and she has stood up to the Corrupt Bastards, including Ted Stevens. She is just fine here -- she offers NOTHING on the national stage to the Republicans other than 1) she's a woman; 2) she's pro-life; and 3) she's a reformer. I think she'll very soon find herself in over her head. She's just a Valley girl from Wasilla (Matanuska Valley, to be exact) and everyone will soon find that out. I feel kind of sorry for her, actually, being made a pawn like this when she could have stayed in Alaska and continued to enjoy her 80% approval rating.

McCain is obviously desperate.

But that's 80% of Alaskans. It's not clear that she would do as well in the "lower 48".

By the way, I thought Hawaii was "foreign and exotic" when Obama went there to visit his grandmother, at least that's what Cokie said. Isn't Alaska also "foreign and exotic" in exactly the same way? We'll have to ask her.

Grandpa McBush says that Obama doesn't have the experience
Grandpa McBush says that Obama is a "celebrity"
Grandpa McBush is flirting with Leiberman, Romney, Ridge, Pawlenty

After Obama's inspiring speech, Grandpa McBush is inspired to throw all previous choices to the trash and pick someone who not only has no experience, but was first runner-up in Ms. Alaska and had her own photo shoot in Vogue magazine.

Now who's the inexperienced celebrity?

We're all trying to point out the hypocrisy. As usual, it just doesn't dawn on the right-wing trolls. It's like the guy who works at the landfill. When you are gagging on the smell of rot, he doesn't seem affected. When you ask "How can you stand the smell?" he replies "What smell?". This is the right-wing, so mired in the rotting stench of hypocrisy that they don't even notice it anymore.

edit: I really need to spell-check first

It's tough to get a troll to stick around long enough to even refute/acknowledge the claim.
Poor devils, always on the move.

It's even harder to try to point hypocrisy out to a righty in person. It's like trying to describe the color blue to someone who has been blind from birth. In the land of the right-wing blind, the one-eyed man gets his eye poked out for being a non-conformist.

Governor’s ethics considered as husband goes back to work at BP
August 23, 2007

News that Governor Sarah Palin’s husband Todd is returning to his pre-election job on the North Slope has gotten some public attention in the last couple of days. But legislators are dismissing the possibility that the job presents a conflict of interest for the Governor.

Two of the world’s biggest oil companies, BP and ConocoPhillips, joined forces Tuesday to try to break a longstanding deadlock over Alaska’s vast reserves of natural gas. They said they would spend billions to build a pipeline from the North Slope to feed energy-hungry markets in the United States and Canada.

The proposal won praise from Alaska’s governor, Sarah Palin. “It’s a good day,” she told reporters in Alaska.

I think you're right, and that's one of the saddest things I've heard all day.

Some of the things that come out of people I know, people who can dress themselves and are otherwise intelligent, just amazes me. It's this authority thing, "well, I heard it on t.v. or read it in the paper or so and so told me so I believe it!"

Then I have to spend day after day convincing them it isn't true, if it's possible to do so. Something like this, well, what can you do besides try to teach mini critical thinking classes? <tired...>

14. McCain Has the Experience
I am not a fan of McCain and will not vote for him, but he can argue that he has the foreign policy experience. In addition, he could ask how much foreign policy experience did Bill Clinton have when he ran for president. I know McCain has called Obama out on his lack of experience, but he also could make the argument that many supporter of Obama have made in defense of Obama picking Biden as the Vice Presidential pick; Obama is running for president, Palin is running for Vice President.

I guess everybody should start talking about the fact that the last time there was a Republican running for high office that claimed they were both a staunch conservative and willing to reach across party lines things changed once they finally got to Washington. George Bush sure lost his taste for bipartisanship after he was elected/selected for President. It is very possible Palin will do the same if she become Vice President.

22. Here's another qualification for CIC - she's a former sports reporter
TVNewser commenter NotsoAnonymous reminds us that VP candidate Gov. Sarah Palin is a former TV reporter. After receiving a journalism degree from the University of Idaho, Palin worked briefly as a sports reporter for TV stations in Anchorage.

And, like some other TVNewsers, she's also a former beauty queen. Palin was Miss Wasilla 1984 and a runner-up in the Miss Alaska pageant that year.

30. So, all she is is a Hillary substitute.
Remember the GOP policy, divide and Conquer. The GOP has seen the massive support for Hillary among Democrats (She did come to a close second to Obama in total votes casted in the Primary). The GOP is hoping by picking a woman, any woman, to get some of those votes for the GOP instead of Obama. This would have been less effective had Obama picked Hillary instead of Biden, but if Obama had picked Hillary, the GOP would have picked someone else to split some minority from the Democratic Vote column.

Please note, this is NOT an attack on Obama or Hillary, just that this woman would NOT have been picked had Obama picked Hillary as his VP. The sole reason she was picked is to divide up the Democratic Vote and nothing more.

Second Note: Notice I did NOT mention the GOP candidates name in this thread. The reason for this is based on a comment FDR told his speech writers in the 1936 elections. FDR said that some people go into the voting booth NOT knowing who they are going to vote for and end up voting for the name they have heard the most, thus NEVER mention the GOP candidate by name. Call him the GOP candidate, the Republican nominee or anything else BUT NEVER HIS NAME. I policy I suggest we all adopt.

155. I forgot to mention the rest of FDR observation
Basically is the GOP would mention his name over and over again, because the GOP hated FDR that much. FDR was counting of that use of his name, and was one of the reasons for his overwhelming victory that year. In 1940 the GOP learned they lesson, they picked a ex-New Dealer as their Candidate. He did better then the right wing Politician the GOP picked in 1936, but also in 1940 the GOP stopped mentioning FDR's name in every ad.

I'm single mom of three and just the IDEA of doing something extracirricular winds me! I have a daughter that was diagnosed with a birth defect at age 4 and the past 2 years have been very hard - having to constantly take her for testing, etc...

How on earth does this woman think she will do this...? nannies, and other 'helpers' I bet.

sure wish I was rich enough to have that kind of help, then maybe I could be successful enough in business to afford to buy my own house, and maybe even be considered a good ;'catch' by some nice man :sarcasm:

I don't want to bash this gal because I don't know ANYTHING about her...but as a mom, I am seriously concerned at her ability to take on the grueling tasks of campaigning and such a high stress job as VP when she still has an infant (much less, one who has a disability) ...? not a good example if you ask me.

5 kids, including one that's just past newborn, and with disabilities to boot.

I would never cast aspersions on a mother who would have to abandon her job under such circumstances. In fact, it's quite reasonable to assume she would, unless either the husband gave up his own job, or they had a lot of outside help.

41. I'm torn
and don't want to be flamed as a concern troll, but I'm not sure about this pick yet. On the one hand, Old Man McSame has made this all too easy for us, picking an inexperienced governor with serious ethics issues who is one-step away from the Presidency. No foreign policy experience whatsoever.

On the other hand, I question how easy it is going to be to push the "change" mantra when the neocons VP pick is a female governor from the state farthest away from Washington and our pick is a white male who's been in the senate for decades. We need to push this ethics investigation HARD!!!

GoBama!

100. I don't think that's exactly how it happened
here's an editorial from the Anchorage Daily news.

http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/ap_alaska/story/507433.html

Why is Gov. Sarah Palin's aide Frank Bailey still collecting a state paycheck?

A recorded phone call proves that Bailey used his official position to try to get the Alaska troopers to fire officer Mike Wooten. Bailey made it clear he was acting on the governor's concerns about trooper Wooten, who happens to be her estranged former brother-in-law. Wooten was suspended but not fired for what his supervisor determined was "a significant pattern of judgment failures" and "a course of conduct totally at odds with the ethics of our profession."...

There's no reason for Gov. Palin to pussyfoot around with Bailey's case. This is not one of those state personnel matters where you have to move heaven and earth to sack the offending employee. Bailey, a former campaign aide, is a political appointee and can be fired at will....

So Gov. Palin's ethically compromised aide Frank Bailey gets to stay on the state payroll, despite doing dirty work on the governor's behalf, but she gives the hook to the ethically upright public safety commissioner who refused to do Bailey's bidding.

And it concludes:

What kind of message does that send to Alaskans?

We can now ask: What kind of message does that send to Americans?

Does Team McCombover have any vetting process at all? :eyes: Or do they not realize that Alaska has newspapers and TV stations and stuff? (or in McCombover's case, that it even attained statehood)

I don't think it was just any state trooper...I think he was her sister's husband...I don't believe she had the right to insist anyone fire him...if she had been a person on the street, could she have influenced such a thing..??? no...so that means, she WAS using her power as Governor to influence firing/reassigning of other state personnel, and it was being done in order to personally benefit a family member...so what would they call that??? corruption?? wb

53. In hindsight, it's not that surprising a choice
Look at the things that McCain desperately needed: Someone younger (preferably younger than 50), someone who is not a Washington insider (so governor, rather than senator), someone who is pro-life and at least a moderately conservative Christian, and (if possible) a woman. Given those things, how many choices did he have? The fact that he was left with this option speaks to the paucity of choices in an intellectually and morally bankrupt Republican party.

But in the end, all she brings to the ticket is the possibility of siphoning off some still-disgruntled Clinton supporters who are still bound and determined to see a woman elected (most of whom will hopefully come to their senses after two more months of campaigning). Anyone for whom Palin is an ideological soulmate wasn't going to vote for Obama anyway.

73. The People are desperate for change.
What this shows is that even the GOP is acknowledging a serious issue this election: The People are desperate for change. Obama's success has been a HUGE shake-up to the status-quo of our political system. Even if he is not elected president, and I certainly hope he is, it's obvious that he has changed the face of politics.

McCain is working furiously to portray himself as a maverick - as someone who also will bring change. His VP choice reflects this image he is trying to project.

I loved Obama's remark though: McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time. Are you willing to bet on only a 10% chance for change? Hahahahahaha

Does the GOP really think a beauty queen who supports aerial hunting and is married to an Oil Exec will get the "Hillary" vote? They are so out of touch with real people.

Palin isn't progress, she's pandering.

She's only had 1.5 years of experience, so they better hope mccain's skin cancer doesn't get any worse or we'll be being led by Governor Barbie.

Sure, she's corrupt enough and in bed with oil enough to be on the ticket, but is she a replacement for Hillary? Ha ha. No, seriously. they think this. A anti-choice, gun-loving, trophy wife scandal-ridden, oil company (what do you call someone who is literally having sex with the oil company?) propagandist.

don't worry, this isn't an issue.

george III's judgment is seriously flawed. This pick is sadly a desperate attempt to seem progressive, but it is simply more of the same -- pandering to progressives, to women, as if we don't know the difference.

Unlike his supporters, we actually read. We are informed. We can't be fooled by sound bites for morans part I, II, and now III.

They'll sell this to their base-- but then, independent studies have shown their base to be the most MIS-informed people in the country. How sad is that? Just think, while they still have access to the interwebs, none of them use factcheck.org or snopes to verify the facts. the repeat like good little followers every word they hear on fox and their other hates shows.

but we must remember to be tolerant of them -- and show them the love and understanding they can't and won't show us. Just because it's OK for them to hate doesn't mean it's OK for us.

jesus wouldn't support hate. While they claim to be Christians, they are being sadly misguided as to what it means to LIVE like a Christian.

Obama wouldn't want us to be nasty to them like they are to us -- remember how classy he was last night. He would never stoop to ad hominem attacks. One day, we'll have politics where the other side debates the issues again, instead of desperate lies and attacks which only make them look bad. For now, we have to comfort ourselves with what is and try to be compassionate.

Cheers.

121. I don't like this line at all...
"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. "

First, during the convention, we heard a lot about Obama's "humble" beginnings. I heard quite a bit that Obama IS the American dream, and proof that you can rise to the top no matter where you come from. IMHO, it seems a little hypocritical criticizing Palin's old job as proof of her inexperience. Are they implying that someone being a small town mayor is a strike against them? That they shouldn't be able to rise to the highest levels of government? I don't think that's what they're intending to say, but the repukes can absolutely spin it that way, and it will resonate with some voters.

Second, yes Palin has no real foreign policy experience, but lets be honest, while Obama has more experience then her, he has a lot less than we would normally like from a presidential candidate. That was a big reason for picking Biden. If the Dems were to run a commercial "do you want a former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency." The repukes would return with a commercial "do you want a former community organizer with zero foreign policy experience as president." They'll use the criticism of Palin to highlight Obama's own inexperience.

It's about policy, not people. It doesn't matter what Palin or McCain did for the last 2, 4 or 40 years. She and her new boss are on the wrong side of too many issues to vote for them.

Just my 2 cents, anyway.

142. While it would be the American Dream to become a doctor...
.. ya can't do it by working as a bookkeeper in a doctor's office. The office of the Presidency is not ceremonial, and it is NOT something that someone with no exposure to foreign policy should have. Obama has worked on issues of national security, a mayor of a tiny town in one of the smallest states in America, does not qualify you to do that job -- no matter how much people want to talk about the American dream.

A person that does not even KNOW what a VP does is not qualified to become President. Had she been a US Senator or Congress, or even the mayor of a major city, I would have different feelings about this. But c'mon... a part-time mayor of a tiny town in Alaska?? No. Not an ounce of proof that she is anything but an NRA, Prolife, pro-oil, tool who has no business being next in line for President. What a freakin' slap in the face to QUALIFIED women everywhere!

The truth is, while the VP's have just been announced, they are not the people that are going to be getting the most press. People vote for the top of the ticket. If true - - and really, who knows and who cares? - - it would probably actually play out as a positive. And anyone who digs and discovers it's true would be viewed as a scumbag for digging into something so personal. It's really untouchable.

153. morally it is ugly to go there
Edited on Fri Aug-29-08 02:41 PM by CitizenPatriot
but the truth of the matter is that anyone running for pres/vp expects to be vetted and under the constitution, they must be transparent and accountable. they are not supposed to lie to us.

why lie? it's unnecessary and unfortunately, as a public official, there are some rights to privacy they no longer have. That was their choice. Remember, Clinton's blow job was our business because he lied about it.

Her daughter's baby is our business if she is lying about it.

I'm sorry to sound so harsh -- I don't mean to come off that way, but I am tired of politicians lying to the people and saying it was private later. Lying is not acceptable and we shouldn't tolerate it. We don't tolerate it from our presidents (well, ok, our democratic presidents), but we will tolerate it -- nay, expect it, from the republicans and not even blink an eye?

john edward's affair is our business, but palin's false pregnancy isn't?

Not getting why one and not the other. transparent and accountable.

and no, it's not ok to lie and say your daughter's baby is yours. there are reasons why this is not ok, morally and health-related. why the lie? It was a choice her daughter made to keep the baby. Good for her. Move on. But be honest.

174. SO??????
It is time to decide if we are in this to "play fair" or win.

It's her baby... but until that is PROVEN (and could DNA testing even prove it), we need to HAMMER this so that by the time some test result comes out, every voter in America thinks she lied about it. The test results? Last month's news.

Did the Repukes wait for "proof" before slandering Edwards with the affair charges? (And it WAS slander if they didn't know it to be true at the time). The fact that he had actually had the affair and had lied about it during the campaign is IRRELEVANT... they didn't KNOW he was lying at the time they accused him of it.

If we want to be the party that stands for truth, get used to losing. If we want to WIN, we hit the "Daughter's Baby" issue everyday up to and including the day we are proven wrong. Then on to something else.

I have a great debate line for Biden... he can tell her she's obviously not committed to political life, what with having five children.

Hopefully she'll stupidly take the bait and say "Senator Biden, Speaker Pelosi has five children, do you think she's committed to political life?".

Then he can move in for the kill... "Governor, I worked with Nancy Pelosi, Nancy Pelosi is a friend of mine, and Governor... you are no Nancy Pelosi!!!".

It worked for Bentson, and would be a striking parallel back to that election.

216. Um . . .
Pelosi's approval ratings are abyssmal, you know. Sarah Palin has an 84% approval rating in the state that knows her best.

You better hope Biden avoids that line like the plague, because it could lose the election right then and there.

A bone thrown to the right-wing nutso fundies, she is McCain's insurance policy against assassination, as Dan Quayl(e) was for daddy bush. Another GOP embarrassment--Sarah Palin: the best the Repubs could get.

162. McCain's Age Now a Major Issue
McCain just made his age a major campaign issue. Why would anyone feel comfortable with a potential vice president without a second of national political experience, let alone international who would be a heart beat away from the Presidency where the President would be the oldest person elected, and therefore most likely to die in office.

As absurd as Mr. McCain's choice may seem, the addition of Mrs. Sarah Palin to the ticket may yet turn out to be a brilliant maneuver. If you are concerned about the possibility of a McCain presidency, as I'm sure we all rightly are, we must prepare against all potential avenues of attack that Mrs. Palin's presence makes available to the republicans. Um, NOW. Their minions are already on the offensive across the news channels stealing Obama's thunder.

Sure, they are bound to employ only shallow, irrational, and baseless strategies, but enough of these one after another, or just one more well-timed maneuver that blind-sides the Obama campaign, and it could be disastrous at this late point.

In all probability, Mrs. Palin will be a very dangerous contender these last few months before the election. The reasons should be obvious to anyone with a modicum of understanding. I'll list a few that may be slightly less obvious:

-After 18 million more references to the cracks in the glass ceiling, she will inspire Hillary supporters who are currently drawn to McCain, despite the fact that she is the Anti-Hillary Clinton. These brainiacs have already exhibited their diminished powers of discrimination. Substance is meaningless to them, and unless we beat them over the head with something of substance, it will be meaningless for all Americans come November 5th. (and many Clinton haters will LOVE her for this coup, out of spite. This will equal re-"newed"? enthusiasm for McCain from die-hards)

-She's a feminine feminist. The political strength of her physical appearance is obvious, but can only take her so far, right? WRONG! DO NOT underestimate the shallow, primal instincts of our well-conditioned consumerist public. This is HUGE. Obama, cue Scarlett Johansson??

-She appears to be a decent, bright, eloquent person (Ah dunno wut she sed, but darn if she ain't purty sayin' it! An' her husband todd rides a ski-mobile! That's like a snow tractor -- she's one of us!)

-A totally unexpected, game-changing, fresh-faced, history-making figure introduced at the last minute. The sheer news-worthiness of Mrs. Palin's new-ness may not die down before November.

-If she is not eviscerated immediately by the Democrats in a substantive fashion (brother-in-law scandal?), she may become an invincible shield for McCain. (McCain pre-Palin: "Hey!! I can say anything, I was a POW damn it!" / McCain post-Palin: "Oh, Sarah... Stop calling me a hero, you're making me blush." Palin: "But you are! Yes, John McCain - I don't care what any of those nasty democrats say, you're my Hero! No, you are OUR Hero! You DESERVE it for what you did for the American people!"

168. As a long-time feminist, I find this insulting. They think we women will vote for anyone as long as
the person is female? How degrading! We have brains, care about the issues, are INFORMED, etc. This should sink McSame with all women who really care about choice, the Supreme Court, and how women are perceived as the result of being led nationally by one of us. To have just anyone doesn't work!

180. Absurd
How absurd? I completely agree with others who are pointing out the blatant insult in all of this: Picking a female because she is female! However, I must say that most people don't spend enough time getting to know voting records, policy proposals etc. It will be grossly degenerative to the Women's movement to elect this pairing.

nominated woman and said she's breaking the glass ceiling and pushing us forward with progress, I felt so proud of him. Really, he took the high road.

As for the anti abortion, little experienced palin, her credentials and ideals speak for themselves, Obama doesn't have to do anything to make those two look bad. he came out smelling like a rose. I so can't wait to vote for him. I haven't been this proud of a presidential candidate since clinton in '92 when I was still naive.

212. Nothing Lost If They Don't Win
Tim Pawlenty, our Governor of Minnesota, didn't get it, and I'm sorry, but I had to chuckle after all of the mwah, mwah, mwah going on over the last year between him and McCain. In my opinion, the Republicans want to keep him here as long as possible, as after Obama's speech last night, they know they don't stand a chance now. They need their cronies wherever they already have them. Sarah Palin sounds like a nice woman, but she doesn't pack enough of a punch. Nothing major will be lost with her if they don't win.
