Tropical Storm Gustav forms in Caribbean
Source: MSNBC.com

MIAMI - Tropical Storm Gustav formed in the central Caribbean on Monday and was heading for the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the National Hurricane center said.

At 2 p.m. EST reports from an Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicated that the storm had maximum winds near 60 mph.

Earlier in the day, when the storm was a tropical depression, forecasters said its center would be moving near or over southwestern Haiti on Tuesday.

The Dominican Republic and Haiti both issued tropical storm warnings for the southern and western parts of the island shared by the two countries.

Oh goody! Just what we needed.

It formed a little south of where Fay formed over the Dominican Republic. Hispaniola has hurricane watches in effect. It looks like it may be heading towards Jamaica.

Fay ran circles around us in the Tampa area. We got nothing, and the rest of the state got whacked.

1. Yeah...
...down here in Sarasota we were expecting a near direct hit from Fay but ended up getting nada. This one looks like it could go anywhere:

2. That's some pretty confused modeling.
This one is over open water, and strengthened pretty fast. I think this one will be a hurricane.

4. Sing it!
Just moved to the end of that red path, and I'd rather not have to deal with that right now.

6. The erratic looking paths moving northward are undoubtedly affected by the trailings
...of Tropical storm Kay whereas the southwestern path showing movement toward Belize and Yucatan Peninsula can be somewhat more defined by steadier atmospheric conditions perhaps

5. Nice, these storms are getting Nazi sounding names now as in Gustav von Kahr (PM-Bavaria),
....Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach (Industrialist), Gustav Radbruch (law/courts) and Gustav Schwarzenegger (SS) to name several notorious Nazis who aided Hitler's rise and WW II efforts :yoiks:

11. What about Gustav of WWII Fame??

Gustav is the most powerful gun ever produced and used in Combat ("Super-guns" have been built since that date, but never used in combat). At 800mm (or 31.5 inches) no gun was as powerful before or since (Larger Caliber weapons have been produced, but these are either 36 inch short barrel mortars like the "Little David" which had been proposed to be used by the US Army in 1945 as the US Army which the German Border, or large caliber but short barreled "Bombards" of the 15th and 16th Centuries, used to knock down Castle Walls till more modern construction of fortification made the ineffective.

For more on Gustav see:
http://www.aopt91.dsl.pipex.com/railgun/Content/Railwayguns/German/Dora%20index.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwerer_Gustav

"The armor-piercing shells were almost seventeen feet long and weighed over seven tons. It took a ton of propellant to fire the shell from the one hundred and five-foot barrel of the giant gun. The shell could penetrate eighty yards of earth. A high explosive shell was also made for this gun. When test-fired, the shell formed a crater nearly ninety feet across and thirty feet deep.

....The four hundred ton barrel was mated to a one hundred and ten ton breach block.. The entire gun with its carriage weighed thirteen hundred and fifty metric tons. The complete machine stood four stories tall, over twenty feet wide, and one hundred and forty feet long."

Gustav is a good name for a powerful hurricane, just like Gustav was the most powerful gun in History.

14. This may be GREAT FOR US!!
HERE ME OUT...

Gustav may be a problem, but WE can take advantage of it! We need to get Obama to go down to New Orleans and help the citizens fortify the levees WHILE the republican national convention is taking place! We can THEN show that OUR candidate is actually DOING something for the people while the oil-rich, anti-environmentalists, most despicable organization in the history of the planet parties with no compunction!

This will ALSO give the media a reason NOT to show the speeches of the idiots, but to show OUR guys in contrast who will be HELPING our fellow man!

OPPORTUNITY, people....NOT tragedy!! Let's start hitting on the fine points of this campaign.
