Sen. Joe Lieberman to speak at GOP convention

WASHINGTON - A Republican official tells The Associated Press that Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman will be speaking at the Republican National Convention.

The GOP official said Wednesday that Lieberman would deliver a speech as Republicans gathered in St. Paul to nominate John McCain for president. The official requested anonymity because he wasn't authorized to make an announcement.

Lieberman was the 2000 Democratic vice presidential nominee but is now an independent. He has been one McCain's strongest supporters and is considered a contender to be McCain's running mate.

9. But he caucuses with the Democratic party.
LIEBERMAN: Yeah. The critical thing is to caucus with the Democrats because if you don't caucus with a party, you don't have the opportunity to hold your seniority in the committee assignments that you've got and that's important to the folks back home

I don't get it. Most of his stands are so opposite of the Republican platform that the Pubs would skin McCain alive if he chose Joe as his VP (which he won't).

So, why is Joe going out of his way to grab onto a candidate that he has practically nothing in common with outside of the Iraq situation?

17. Joe's "mind" got swallowed up in his ego.
Losing the Dem primary to Lamont was a huge blow to his ego. I don't think he gives a rat's patootie about the issues anymore (except for warmongering), if in fact he ever did. It's all about keeping his tenuous grip on his perceived power, and he sees it slipping away.

Gosh, I think I'm gonna cry now ... or not.

Zell was never the Vice Presidential Candidate of the Democratic Party. However, our Senate majority is an illusion right now. Until more Dems get voted in, we need McCain's mouthpiece caucusing with us.

Edited on Wed Aug-20-08 12:25 PM by WyldRogue
What good is a 'majority' when that 'majority' won't fight?? That the same thing in saying that I should keep a thorn in my ass so as to keep the pus from leaking out of the festering wound it created. That's the kind of mentality that is destroying our country.

Might as well say we should keep Shrub and company then. At least they FIGHT for what they want.... the only thing the Dems have fought for was against those that voted them in office to stop Shrub and company and to hold them accountable. And 2 years later, everything is still off the table and I really don't see the 'Dem Majority' putting up a fight to get everything BACK on the table...

53. Because as long as Joe doesn't formally call himself a Republican...
he keeps us from being the minority party in the Senate, which means the Republicans don't take over leadership of all the committees and set the agenda, as they did in the first part of Chimpy's reign.

I'm sure that Joe is using his status as a "swing Senator" to maintain his leadership of whatever committees he's on. It's absolutely crucial that the Dems win an appreciable majority in this year's election so that the asshole becomes completely irrelevant and can be assigned to cleaning the toilets in the Senate restrooms, if he's even qualified to do that.

31. What many fail to understand or see....
... is that it is a matter of FACT that the Dems in charge aren't going to do ANYTHING to make things right. All I have seen over the past 2 years is them bowing down to Shrub and company time and time and time and time and time again. Joe knows those so called Dems won't do anything about anything which is why he thumbs his nose at his colleagues the same way Shrub and everyone associated with his Administration does.

And to think I voted this cowards into office only to watch as they continuously capitulated time and time and time and time and time again. Not 1 of them had the 'balls' to fight for me and my family!! The criminals run free and rampant while the rest of the Repugs work the Dems over and they get whatever they want. Seems the Repugs have the balls and courage to fight for something. Sadly, I cannot say the same for the Dems (including the ones supposedly 'attempting' to do something BUT, when it came down to it, even they back off of their Repug lords and capitulate.

Where is the Sargent at Arms?? Why hasn't he brought Rove and Miers in for questioning?? Won't happen now when justice is needed, the Dems need MORE people to grow balls to stand up and fight. Cowards....each and every one save for a few that have tried to answer the call for justice.

If I were a Democrat, I would be totally embarrassed at my Dem-elected leaders! I'm an Independent and I am embarrassed that I was taken as a sucker with the 'we will fight' motto. I cast my vote for them and got nothing in return except watched as they propped up the Repugs. The Dems are now considered 'Masters of Capitulation' and they should be ashamed of themselves for being such blatant cowards.

And Good ol Joe Blow is only showcasing their cowardice to the nation and to the rest of the world....

37.  Sen. Joe Lieberman to speak at GOP convention
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democratic Party's vice presidential candidate in 2000 and now an independent who is one of John McCain's strongest supporters, will speak at the Republican National Convention, an official said.

(snip)

Republican officials say top McCain advisers have been reaching out to big donors and high-profile delegates in key states to gauge the impact of picking an abortion-rights supporter like Lieberman. Conservative activists, in turn, are waging an increasingly vocal campaign against the move, raising the prospect of acrimony at the convention.

There's also lingering questions of whether Republican National Committee rules would allow someone who is not registered as a Republican to be the vice presidential nominee, or whether they would need to be changed — a process that could incite a right-flank revolt.

Some Republicans speculate that Lieberman's name simply is being floated to make a Republican abortion-rights backer, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, seem more acceptable to conservatives. Ridge, too, is believed to be under serious consideration, along with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, both Republicans and abortion-rights opponents.

Including his chances of being re-elected back into the senate (at least as a dem, though I think he has no chance of being re-elected as a repub either). And he's now making the best of his remaining time as a ranking one. Even if it means burning any/all democratic bridges in doing so. Look at it this way. With dems ignoring/avoiding/isolating him, and repugs not trusting/using him Joes remaining time in the senate after this year WILL be a 'cold' one. And it couldn't have happen to a nicer guy (sarcasm).
