White Americans No Longer A Majority By 2042

WASHINGTON - White people will no longer make up a majority of Americans by 2042, according to new government projections. That's eight years sooner than previous estimates, made in 2004. The nation has been growing more diverse for decades, but the process has sped up through immigration and higher birth rates among minority residents, especially Hispanics.

It is also growing older. "The white population is older and very much centered around the aging baby boomers who are well past their high fertility years," said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. "The future of America is epitomized by the young people today. They are basically the melting pot we are going to see in the future."

The Census Bureau Thursday released population projections through 2050, based on rates for births, deaths and immigration. They are subject to big revisions, depending on immigration policy, cultural changes and natural or manmade disasters.

The U.S. has nearly 305 million people today. The population is projected to hit 400 million in 2039 and 439 million in 2050. That's like adding all the people from France and Britain, said Steve A. Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington group that advocates tighter immigration policies.

6. Same nonsense I have read before, ignoring how people change ONCE in the US

The Change is based on two facts, neither supported by historical record, first that the Hispanics of today will continue to have as many children as they do today. This "fact" has been made by ALL immigrants going back to the late 1800s. The problem is come the Second or third generation in the US, the grandchildren of Immigrants adopt standard White reproduction level. This change will cut the number of non-whites by a huge amount.

Second, immigrants are assumed to continue to immigrant at today's rate or greater rate. I do NOT see that continuing. People immigrants for two reasons, first they are "pulled" to a place to immigrant to and then "push" from their former residence by the bad conditions of that place. The problem is most immigrants into the US are NOT from Northern Mexico, but Southern Mexico and Central America. The "Push" for the last ten years has been the drop in the price of Corn as NAFTA took off and the US was able to dump its excess Corn production into Mexico and Central America, cutting the price of Corn in those countries and by doing so forcing many peasants off their land, for it was no longer possible to grow corn and sell the corn at a price the peasant could live off. That "Push" no longer exists, and I expect the number of immigrants to drop as the price of Corn goes up do to Ethanol production in the US. Furthermore the "Pull" of jobs in the US will go down as the US enters a Recession do to the high price of Oil. With less jobs the US is a less attractive place to look for work. Neither of these factors are considered in the report, and together I see immigration slowly dropping (And Mexican family size even in Mexico has been dropping for the last 30 years, a drop I foresee will continue and reduce the number of people looking for employment).

Third, movement back to Mexico and Central America. People forget that even at the height of US immigration in the late 1800s, up to 1/3 (and some Historian think it was closer to 1/2) of all immigrants did NOT stay in the US (Through some went back for from, causing the disputes as to the numbers). They worked for many years and then moved back to their homeland taking whatever savings they have with them. With today's ability to move, i.e. automobiles and planes, I foresee more of this, much more then the Census report takes into consideration (I have read one account of a Mexican labor who returns to Mexico every fall and every spring smuggles himself back across the border). Many people like being around people they grow up with, the US is one of the few countries where that is NOT the norm (and in many parts of the US it is the Norm). Thus when someone has to move to find work, it at first is viewed as a temporary move, only after time does it become your new home. Many people who grew up in places where they family has been for centuries, the call of the old country is to strong, they will move back taking their families with them. Most Immigrants will NOT do this, but a significant enough will to offset most of the numbers set by the Census bureau.

Your third point would hold up particularly if the US economy fails to grow enough to provide good jobs for immigrants. Prolonged economic stagnation would result in many immigrants leaving.

Have you looked at the value of the US dollar with respect to the Mexican Peso recently?

The term "Hispanic" and other synonymous terms refer to an ethno-linguistic group, not a race. There's the misconception that Hispanics are "brown," but many would consider themselves white and others mixed race (mestizo -- mixed Indian and European heritage) and still others (such as Dominican immigrants) black. Already, in fact, upwardly mobile Hispanics often classify themselves as white/caucasian.

15. Many are missing the most salient point of this article...

If this trend does continue, take a look at the total pop of the U.S. Not good by any means. As an anecdote, I live in a Hispanic neighborhood. Its a different world in some respects. 7-10(or sometimes more) in 2 bedroom houses, large SUV's and trucks. Their are some very warm families in my neighborhood, but I've always wondered how anyone can afford to have so many kids these days.

These families are home all the time. They spend more family time then I've ever seen. The only conclusions that I can come to is that many own small landscaping, auto, ironwork businesses and pay no taxes or since you may have two separate families living in one house, they all contribute to the expenses, even the older children.
