US denies troops fighting in Georgia
Source: AFP

August 13, 2008 07:09am
THE US denied a Russian suggestion today that US military trainers were linked to a Georgian attack on South Ossetia and that some of them may have been killed.

"Everyone is accounted for and safe," said Pentagon spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Elizabeth Hibner. "There are no reports of an American troop being killed."

Earlier today in Brussels, Russia's NATO Ambassador hinted at US military backing for Georgia's sudden military incursion into the breakaway region of South Ossetia last week.

"At least 127 American military instructors were in Georgia at the beginning of the conflict. There were joint training sessions that happened right before the start of the conflict," Dmitry Rogozin said.

He indicated that some soldiers killed in the fighting could prove to be American, speaking of "dark-skinned Georgians" found dead.

1. Of course not...
We only fight countries that are much weaker than we are, and that we can crush handily. Just the same as Russia.

3. Wait... So I take it there are few African Americans from Georgia (country, duhh)?
teehee teehee, yes I said that on purpose because I think I'm so damn funny....

Anyways, I'm not fully understanding why black = African American though... Was there more identification?

Maybe he was Jamaican American. :P But seriously, I don't get it.

4. I'm guessing ...
I think the implication is that the USA has a substantial black population, and a lot of them wind up in the US military, relatively speaking. Whereas almost nobody in Georgia is black, relatively speaking.

I don't mean to suggest that it was not stupid as a bit of propaganda, or that it doesn't have racist overtones.

5. Americans or Blackwater mercs?
I insist upon the distinction between the two concepts...

8. Yep ...
... that was very specific wording from the Pentagon mouthpiece that
simply said that no official uniformed squaddie was killed ...

> "There are no reports of an American troop being killed."

(My emphasis)

Absolutely nothing about any other elements of American armed force
(including mercenaries) who may have been present/missing/injured/killed
or about any GI who was merely present/missing/injured (but not killed).

Maybe time to watch for "non-combat-related-deaths" in the news reports
or simply put it down to the usual merc activity?

9. Define "fighting".
Does artillery observervation constitute "fighting"?
Does facilitating communications between Georgian units constitute "fighting"?
Does jamming Russian communications constitute "fighting"?
Does airlifting Georgian troops into combat zones constitute "fighting"?
Does planning and advising current military operations while back at HQ constitute "fighting"?

Lt. Col. Hibner is a Pentagon spokesperson, in other words, a liar by profession. She might be telling the truth, parts of the truth or none of it all. She really doesn't know or care. Lying & obfuscating are "duty" in that world.

10. The fact that they are still there shows they have no plans of sitting it out.
Otherwise they would've been evacuated toute suite.
