BP shuts down Georgia pipelines
Source: BBC News

Energy giant BP says it has shut two of three pipelines that run through Georgia as a precautionary measure.

A spokeswoman for the firm said the two oil and gas pipelines, which run from the Caspian Sea into Georgia, had not been damaged by the recent fighting.

The oil pipeline, which BP owns as part of a consortium, can carry up to 90,000 barrels of oil per day.

Another oil pipeline, which runs from Azerbaijan through southern Georgia into Turkey, is already shut.

1. Aww, BP must be heartbroken. Now they'll just HAVE to raise their prices again...
... along with everyone else...

... and the oil speculators will up their bids, raising prices still more.

2. That's what happens when the price of oil drops
Blow up a pipeline, start a War, whatever it takes to feed the greed.

8. Don't know what BP will do with their gas prices (those British are hard to read)
:) but oil prices are down another $1+ today, so far the speculators are not impressed. My guess is if the British thought they would make more money by not pumping oil through that pipeline, they would have shut it off a long time ago.

4. He said they were trying to bomb it.
There were bomb strikes near the pipeline but they didn't actually hit it.

5. There are three major pipelines
Edited on Tue Aug-12-08 10:16 AM by 14thColony
Of which two, the BTC and the South Caucasus Pipeline, are buried along their entire length. The WREP may also be buried; not sure. Kinda hard to hit a 1 meter-wide pipeline buried 1 meter deep. More likely Saakashvili wanted to try to stir up international condemnation of Russia by claiming they were going after the oil/gas pipelines. Who's going to prove him wrong?

6. That president knows what he is doing, if anything goes wrong he just fly back home

snip...

But Mr. Saakashvili has resisted the notion that he was somehow taken in. Asked in a recent interview on CNN if he believed Georgia could win against Russia militarily, Mr. Saakashvili said, “I am not crazy.”

But many here say he is headstrong and reckless, endangering the country’s security by rashly ordering an attack on the Russian enclave of South Ossetia on the eve of the Olympic Games in Beijing, and badly underestimating Russia’s determination to respond militarily. The critics say he has shown he is willing to put his ambition ahead of the best interests of his people.
