I don't know enough about the situation
to pick sides.

But this Saakashvili looks like a lying
lawyer to me.

5. NATO says membership pledge to Georgia stands 12 Aug 2008 13:56:34 GMT
BRUSSELS, Aug 12 (Reuters) - NATO said on Tuesday that its April summit pledge that Georgia will one day become a member of the alliance still stands, despite fighting with Russia over the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia.

Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said the U.S.-led military alliance awaited confirmation on the ground of Russia's order to cease military operations, but that was not enough and the situation must revert to the status quo was before clashes began on Aug. 6.

"I think that the Bucharest communique stands. The allies have said in Bucharest that one day Georgia will join NATO," de Hoop Scheffer told a news conference after NATO ambassadors met Georgia's ambassador to discuss the crisis.

Georgia had made a number of requests to NATO for assistance, which the allies agreed to consider urgently, he said, reaffirming that Moscow's use of force had been massive and disproportionate.

But he added: "NATO is not seeking a direct role or a military role in this conflict."

6. The issue of course
is that were Georgia to become a member of nato then a similar issue to the current one would directly involve Nato. Having said that I doubt that under such circumstances they would have been allowed to action the artillary bombardment of South Ossetia.

Looks like some entry changes may be likely to occur here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provisional_Administration_of_South_Ossetia#Provisional_Administrative_Entity_of_South_Ossetia

8. One day
"NATO said on Tuesday that its April summit pledge that Georgia will one day become a member of the alliance..."

I think we will all be in the United Federation of Planets when that day comes.

NATO "mistake" encouraged Russia attack -Georgia 12 Aug 2008 14:38:40 GMT
Source: Reuters
BRUSSELS, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Georgia's envoy to NATO said on Tuesday the Atlantic alliance had made a mistake by not giving his country a roadmap for membership at a summit this year, and Russia had taken that as "a green light" to attack.

"It is our clear position and this position is strengthened after the Russian violations, that it was a big mistake made by allies that Georgia and Ukraine did not get the Membership Action Plan in Bucharest," ambassador Revaz Beshidze said.

"We think Russia got this message as a green light, and, mostly, the recent steps we have in the territory of Georgia come from this mistake," Beshidze told a news conference after meeting ambassadors of the 27-nation military alliance.
