71. I got to work with his guitar player of 10 years.
Guy named Tony. Worked with him at Stacks records in 68. He told me once Isaac used to lie on the floor in the studio all night while they recorded everything.
This guitar player said he got calls but turned them all down cause Isaac payed better.

17. Famous people die at the same rate as regular people
But we notice apparent clusters, and westerners tend to be fixated on the number three.

Poisson distributions have this clustering feature, and the distribution of deaths of famous people is probably best modeled by that statistical function.

Anyway, that's my take on it.

When do you stop counting?

If no MAJOR celebrity dies for a week or more do you go back and start looking for minor celebrities or production people who "kicked it" to make this stupid superstition work?

36. Stax Forever!
Edited on Sun Aug-10-08 03:52 PM by dbt
Isaac was such a vital part of this GREAT little record company in Memphis. With partner David Porter, he wrote (among other hits) "Hold On, I'm Comin'" for Sam And Dave. He played piano with the Stax house band, which included Booker T and the MGs and the Memphis Horns. Along with whatever backup singers who had been contracted for a particular session, any singer could not have wished for better backing on a song.

Hayes's Hot Buttered Soul got the jump on Motown and Marvin Gaye's What's Going On by better than a year and a half, as Isaac threw out the rule book on how long a song "ought" to be and what was "acceptable" content.

Most of the world will remember him from "Shaft" and "Chef" onwards, but his roots went way father back and way deeper than that.

Thank you, Isaac, for helping me make it through my teenage years. That Stax Music will live FOREVER in my heart and soul!

Your Grieving Fan,
dbt

83. From what's been said,
Matt and Trey, despite the falling out they had with Hayes, never really gave up on their friendship with him, and probably will put out some sort of tribute. If that's true it would be surprising, coming from such cynical bastards.

84. What A VOICE! And what a loss to the world of music.
I bought one of his albums many years ago (Live at the Sahara Tahoe) when I could afford to buy or own but a scant few, but he was a MUST HAVE in my my small picky collection. My sympathies to his family and to all his lifelong fans.

88. Isaac Hayes, R&B Legend, Dies at Age 65
Source: Entertainment Weekly

Oscar winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Isaac Hayes has died at the age of 65, according to CNN.

Hayes, best known for his pop/R&B classic ''Theme From Shaft'' and more recently as the voice of Chef on South Park, was found next to an active treadmill by relatives, according to reports from the Shelby County Sheriff's Department in Memphis, Tennessee. Attempts to revive the singer were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead in Memphis shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

Hayes' career began as a songwriter and producer for Stax Records in Memphis — a pioneering R&B label of the 1960s that was widely considered the southern counterpart to Motown in Detroit. His best known compositions from this period include ''Soul Man,'' originally recorded by Sam & Dave, and later a big hit a second time when it was covered by the Blues Brothers in 1978, ''Hold On! I'm Comin','' and Carla Thomas' ''B-A-B-Y.'' (See Rachel Sweet performing the song, a U.K. hit for her in 1978.)
