Renewal Of Vows On Separate Oaths

The IMF's desire to continue to maintain close ties with Turkey coupled with the list of achievements mentioned by the economy minister as a consequence of the government’s determination to maintain the stand-by agreements with the fund signal the love affair between the two will carry on.

The International Monetary Fund’s qualified backing of the government drew a measured response from the economy minister yesterday, signaling both sides are willing to extend their relationship in line with the “precautionary stand-by agreement” currently being discussed.

No program can replace what a strong and reformist government can do, said Economy Minister Mehmet Şimşek yesterday, a day after the IMF said Turkey still needed to tackle important structural problems despite the string of successes since the 2001 economic crisis that culminated in a string of bankruptcies and a huge shrinkage in the economy.

Şimşek pointed to the 17 failed IMF programs that came before the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, as proof of the determination of the government...cont'd
