Hurricane forms off Mexican coast {WEST/PACIFIC coast}

A tropical storm which formed off the west coast of Mexico has gained strength and become a hurricane.

Hurricane Hernan was detected 1,390km (865 miles) off the coast and was expected was keep moving out to sea.

It is the fifth named hurricane of this year's Pacific hurricane season, which runs from August to October.

Meteorologists warned on Thursday that an above-average number of storms and hurricanes were expected to hit the Pacific in 2008.

y'know, where Obama's from, and where he's speaking today, in fact.

IF that track holds and it eventually turns WSW, we're in the clear...

Tropical Storm Hernan, the eighth named storm of 2008 in the eastern Pacific Ocean formed late on August 6, according to the National Hurricane Center.

650 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Tropical Storm Hernan was not expected to menace land. But forecasters said it could strengthen.
