Urging drilling, House GOP members refuse to leave floor for recess
Source: The Raw Story

In a dramatic protest aimed at urging Congress to vote to drill for more oil within the US, House Republicans are refusing to leave the House floor despite a vote to adjourn the chamber early Friday afternoon.

Politico reports:

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House and turned off the light and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.

Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi's refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m. and are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess.

At one point, the lights went off in the House and the microphones were turned off in the chamber, meaning Republicans were talking in the dark. But as Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz..) was speaking, the lights went back on, and the microphones have been turned on as well.

107. "Somebody call Politico! I'm gonna hold my breath and turn blue!"
Grandstanding is exactly what it is: and it's pointless grandstanding -- like a bunch of actors doing repeated curtain calls after the audience has left the theater. They must be glad they have Politico to cover these vacuous noises

8. what's hurting the American economy
is our steadfast refusal to dump just 100 million into vertical algae reactor R&D. Within five years, easily, we could have it perfected and literally be on our way to complete self sufficiency.

It already works at rates between 30K and 100K gallons, theoretically out to 180K gallons per acre per yer with the right membranes and monocultures. It grows to 67% carbon dioxide by weight, essentially by removing CO2 from the atmosphere, so when it is burned again, it's CO2 neutral in terms of breakdown, and best of all the continuous model cost works out to something like $20 / barrel (not gallon) and more efficiencies in future development may make it even cheaper.

Filtered and feed-stock algae in turn provides raw protein for animal feed, so no part goes to waste.

What's left for R&D? Osmotic membrane tweaks for continuous processing and monoculture stability. These are itty bitty things that will certainly resolve with serious funding.

It's real tech, and it's inevitable that we'll end up using it, but not before everyone with oil stocks tries to finish destroying our planet.

14. They haven't raked in enough profits yet.
So they are asking us to invest more in oil drilling with $4 dollars a gallon and talk about $10 dollars a gallon down the road. Drilling sounds just like the answer every motorist is looking for.

I can think of less expensive methods of propelling my transportation. One method is pretty cheap and I'm thinking about it a little... It's the same propulsion system the "Flintstones" used in their cars. Fred Flintstone will use his feet to propel himself along the highways of Bedrock if you remember. But maybe peddle power would be an improvement?

The point I'm trying to make is why should anyone be paying money to propel a vehicle in the first place? How much do you spend to propel your bicycle? And we're supposed to be jumping to drill for prices that will jump to $10 bucks a gallon?

40. Yes. And I am also saying much MORE than that.
Pelosi is abusing her seat as Speaker merely to gain more power and prestige for herself within her district, rather than as Speaker of The People's House, representing all of America.

On NATIONAL issues she has abrogated her responsibilities to the point that she should be removed.

When something comes up that directly effects HER DISTRICT, she suddenly decides to do her job.

Pelosi can co engage in a solitary exercise of her rights under Lawrence v. Texas.

39. RANT ON.....
I guess everyone on this board is Rich, because I certainly have a problem with the gas at its current price. I have been programmed in an establishment that has made me a slave to gas. This is not my fault, there are no alternatives... I drive a 1999 Honda civic 4cyl.... I have 4 kids and make 35k per year...

My kids have to eat and for the that I have to work and for that I have to use gas if there was an affordable alternative to that then I would get it so ... To be honest I don't care what congress does to get the price down they just need to do something... Drill, Tax the Oil Companies, Raise the taxes on the Richer people... This Gas Tax hike, Gas Premium, Gas Windfall, Opec cartel driven, Wall Stree Speculators price at the pump has seriously caused me to cut back on Food for my Family.

Do whatever it takes to offset the price of Oil so that I can get to work and not have to take the very milk out of my kids cereal bowls to do it...

Why isn't our leadership taking care of people like me on this issue. The Democrats are supposed to help the little guy like me... How come not one politician is talking about subsidizing the lower income folks gas....

I will file for Gas stamps or gas cards whatever.... All you stuck up rich folks just keep paying the 4 or 5 or 6 or 10 dollar a gallon gas... Take your money and buy the carbon credits or whatever it is to make the environment better or the global warming end... Use that money and reduce those of us who's income bracket isn't up there down to a 1 or 2 per gallon .... Do whats fair and do whats right...

Not one single initiative that any politician has put forth is doing anything to lower the price of gas 1 cent....

And believe me when I tell you I am a 100 percent registered voting Democrat always have been but this Issue is going to break me.... and I may have to vote for the person that speaks to my needs.

43. I didn't say it would
I said Congress needs to do something. Lower the cost to lower income people...subsidize it

and if telling speculators that we will drill in every corner of the USA to increase production forces them to sell Gas contract short and lowers the price then that works for me too.... Whatever we have to do ... just do this is America Damnit..... Sometime I think I drifted off to a third world nation....

45. So you think locking ourselves into futile and costly efforts
...that won't do diddly-squat in the long run is justified if it lowers prices in the short term?

How about instead we go after the people who are artificially raising oil prices to get what they want?

I agreed with you on the need for Congress to do something. But I absolutely don't agree that using a garden hose on a forest fire is helpful. The oil companies have plenty of places they could be drilling right now. And there are alternative technologies available today that could make an enormous difference -- if we had leadership willing to stop bending over to protect the oil barons.

49. No What I said is
Our party has controlled congress for going on 2 years now. They saw this train wreck coming and have Done nothing. NOTHING... Complaining about the oil companies profits or chastising them for not drilling on open land is not fixing the problem which is the cost of gas at the pump....

The Repukes use the issue as a politicial wedge but when the Democratic leadership says they won't even entertain the idea of drilling more oil it sets the markets up for increased prices. Speculators wont sell oil contracts short when they know no new oil is coming on to the market. So my business question is this

What does it hurt to open all of our land to drilling?

Using your own logic the oil companies won't drill on it anyway since they aren't drilling on open land now.... So there must be more to the issue then the simple logic you are trying to imply.

and in the mean time while we wait, wait, wait, for some miracle replacement for Cars.... Which by the way there are over 150 million of on the road in use in America and so here is some more simple logic.... Even if you came up with the super deluxe water powered vehicle today and put it to market and replaced cars at a rate of 1 million per year (well you do the math) So in the mean time my family has to suffer with the high prices and cut costs elsewhere.

Now back to my original suggestion. Congress needs to pass a law that subsidizes lower income people's cost of gasoline. When Oprah and me pay the same amount for a gallon of gas which we both have the same exact need for then there is a problem in America. Nationalize it do whatever it takes but doing nothing is criminal and sorry to say it but Pelosi is doing nothing.

No, you're unreasonable because you said "What does it hurt to open all of our land to drilling?" after I'd already said offshore drilling isn't going to help and called it a futile and costly effort, etc. You've obviously got it in your head that drilling up all of America in search of lower oil prices is worth it and you aren't listening to anything else. That's exactly the kind of desperate reaction the Repubs and the oil barons are counting on to give them what they want...the very same people who got us into this mess with terrorism and high oil prices.

But I guess you'll just have to find out on your own.

106. Sigh, Sigh,
I can turn your same argument around on you too... Who are you to say that drilling is futile and costly that won't produce the desired effect of lower prices? You are so omnipotent and obviously got it in your head that not giving the Oil Companies carte blanche to drill in areas where many scientists and oil researches have said there are Billions of barrels of oil is the right thing to do... That I call flawed logic.... That I say what does it hurt? Who gets hurt by the Congress giving Oil Companies the rights to drill in Anwr and off the coasts? If that don't drill, if it doesn't produce we are no worse off for the effort but if it does and if the speculators that are selling oil contract futures see a move to find more oil the price may just market adjust and go down... Doing nothing is not the answer and that is my point.

...logic and facts are too much for most people it seems. This person obviously cares about his/her children, but isn't considering their future.

It's aggravating.

On a lighter note, welcome to DU! (A little belatedly...) You're from my favorite city in the country. Hope to see you around the forum again.

Well, I shan't go further. I had a rather -er spirited reply further down but it was a bit angry for my non-virginal ears. I've deleted it.

55. The Repubs voted down tax credits for renewable energy
AND they voted down subsidies for home heating oil.

So you're barking at the wrong party.

And if you're looking for immediate relief, it ain't there with either solution.

Please don't fall for the propaganda.

If oil companies all started drilling in ANWR and off the coasts tomorrow, it STILL wouldn't affect the price much. There just isn't enough there to make a difference on the world market.

44. Drilling won't help. They've already got millions of acres they don't drill on.
Tying up the leases and restricting access to public lands is what this game is about, trading in possibilities and unproven assets.......speculation. ANWR by some estimates will provide 20 days of supply at todays rate of consumption and will take 10 years to come on line. Could be more, make it 60 days. Drilling is not the answer, the only quick relief at the pump is allowing the speculators to steal your childrens future instead of their milk. Tough decision but drilling is not the answer.

51. Flawed logic
If they don't drill on the land they have then what does it hurt to open up use of the land that they don't have.... This issue is not a logical winner for the Democrats. Congress needs to do something my solution is quite different I don't really care if gas is $100 a gallon if you can afford it pay for it but it needs to be prorated fairly.... When I have to take food out of my kids mouths to pay the increase in gas because I am a slave to this commodity then in fact my Freedom as an American is in jeoparday and for that I will revolt.

Do you realize how little sense that makes? They already own millions of acres of undeveloped oil leases, but you want to open up even more for drilling? :wtf:

I understand that you're frustrated by the high prices, but the facts are that even if they open up the offshore areas for drilling that are now off-limits, it will be over 10 years before we see any of that oil, and even then there will be at the most a few pennies per gallon change in price.

This just after Exxon made over $1400 a second in PROFIT over the last quarter. And it's the Democrats fault? :eyes:

Good luck with your revolt.

64. Again I just don't understand your logic
I am not arguing that the time frame to get oil out of the ground is at least 10 years and I know I am taking the environmental arguments out of this but, If you say that there are millions of acres of undeveloped oil leases that have oil on them and the Oil companies are not drilling on those lands then exactly what harm does it do to Open the ANWR and Coastal drilling to Oil Companies that will not drill...Further other arguments being made are that there is just not enough oil here (U.S.) to make a difference in the price then why is this even an issue on the Political stage? I think there must be trillions of barrels of oil on our own lands, compared to the rest of the world we barely pump any of our own supply using our own resources... What are we waiting for the world to run out so we can say AHA but we still have some here?

I agree with the other poster that said our natural resources are a right of the people. The oil in this country belongs to all of us not to some greedy oil executive. The government needs to take control of this resource, which we are all slaves too and manage/control the usage and distribution so as to make it fair for everyone.

My argument is strictly with people that are putting emotion in front of the pocketbook. This gas fiasco has seriously made me change the way I can alot money. It is hurting my family and my ability to get ahead and it is the responsibility of our elected leaders to understand this point and act on in to the benefit of us all.

76. I don't get your logic
The gas and oil companies have leases that they're sitting on. There's no reason that the couldn't drill on them now yet we should give them more access to more land for them to not drill on?

I see no reason why congress shouldn't say "you drill on what you've got before you come demanding more land."

The truth is they're hoarding the leases most likely to make it easier to manipulate the markets.

102. Then they won't have any problem returning the leases in exchange for new ones right?
Since the ones they're holding are so unprofitable.

It worked out real well for Alaska. The lease sat for 31 years unused yet Exxon Mobil sued for $800M in damages after Alaska tried to take it back for non-use. $800M on a lease that must not have been profitable or they would have produced something on it.

Or maybe $800M is considered a pittance? I should have such a pittance.

http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=104&sid=1402840

If you believe that the oil companies are sitting on those leases because they're just not profitable I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.

73. We're sitting on a gazillion barrels of oil?
REALLY? Where?

There's no gazillion barrels of oil or anything even remotely approaching that expectation anywhere off the coast or in the continental US. ANWR will deliver a few cents drop in the price of oil for a year or so -- in 10 years. Meanwhile we'll be subsidizing the oil companies for that operation and their expensive new offshore drilling, on top of everything else we already subsidize for them.

In return I'm sure the speculators will be willing to shave a few dollars off the ever-increasing cost of a barrel now and then, just to make us feel better. Ask nicely and they might even let it last long enough to trickle down to your local gas station before they raise the price yet again!

I'm really not interested in paying for this misinformed, misguided pipe dream about ANWR and offshore drilling you and so many others share at the behest of the Repubs and the oil barons. In fact I've had it with being screwed by panicky, stupid Americans who don't know how to think for themselves and don't pay attention until trouble is sitting on their front doorstep. Eight years of that is quite enough, thank you very much.

For your children's sake, INFORM yourself.

Jimmy Carter was right...only now do we realize it...Even Sen John Warner said it...

Even if we hit a sizable amount...who owns it...them Oil Giants and they sell to the highest bidder....

We are a spoiled bunch and we don't want to accept that fact....we love our toys, large and small, we are addicted to diversion(FUN)

So the Pubs can ya ya all they want...the facts are there...we cannot control our consumption cept for one thing...the cost. The higher it goes, the lower the cosumption....we gatta let go of gross misuse of energy...at least reduce it....already we see a 15% drop....all non essential use is dropping....we need to go further

78. House GOP Revolts over gas prices
Source: The Politico

At the stroke of 5 on Friday afternoon, House Republicans ended their half-day protest on the darkened chamber floor with a round of “God Bless America.”

That capped a wild day in the chamber, where Republicans, aides and tourists broke all manner of House rules to protest the Democrats’ decision to leave Washington for the five-week August recess without voting on a measure to open new land to domestic oil and gas exploration.

The uproar began shortly before noon, after members cast their votes along party lines on the question of whether or not to adjourn for the day.

A small band of Republicans, protesting the decision to adjourn without an oil vote, started to speak from the well—even though the lights weren’t on, the microphones were turned off and most of their colleagues were scrambling to catch flights out of town.

An empty floor is one thing when TV cameras are there, but C-Span’s cameras, which typically broadcast every word uttered on the floor of both chambers, were not allowed to broadcast the revolt since the chamber was officially closed for business.

They 'revolted' over off shore drilling, which the Dems would not discuss at all unless there was comprehensive energy policies discussed, including alternative energy sources.

I'm so tired of this crap. The M$M reports this like it is the Dems who are stonewalling, when it is the Repubs who won't discuss anything but off shore drilling and more leases, when the oil companies haven't utilized all of the leases or drilling permits they already have.

Situated on North County Road near the fabled Breakers Hotel, the estate features a French Regency-style, 44,000-square-foot main residence, plus a 16,000-square-foot guest house, two swimming pools, a tennis court and a movie theater. Ned Monell of Sotheby's International Realty in Palm Beach has the listing.

And here off Southampton, N.Y.,
Originally built for the DuPont family in 1927, this nearly ten-acre property commands prime oceanfront in Southampton. The estate features a 55,000-square-foot Gothic castle with 12 bedrooms and 18 bathrooms. Situated on 9.7 acres, the property has a tennis court and swimming pool. Real-estate developer Francesco Galesi is the seller. He acquired the property in 1992 for $2.3 million after its owner, financier Barry Trupin, went bankrupt. During Trupin's ownership the property was known as Dragon's Head. The owner's daughter, Christina Galesi of Sotheby's International Realty in Bridgehampton, has the listing.

And also here off Hawaii's Big Island,
You can be the real Big Kahuna in this oceanfront residence located on the grounds of the Four Seasons Hualalai Resort on the Kona-Kohala coast of Hawaii's Big Island. The property offers views of the 18th hole of the Hualalai Golf Course, the Kohala Mountains and Maui in the distance.
Built in 1999, the 4,100-square-foot house has four bedrooms and four bathrooms, but it's situated on only half an acre, public records show. The property does have its own swimming pool and an ancient Hawaiian fishpond.

Now that's what I call off shore drilling that you can live with.

The stonewalling, filibustering rethugs are shouting in the dark again.
That pretty much sums up the state of the rethugnican party.
Bitching and moaning to a handful of rabid ditto Buttheads.

But then it's not really something you can draw a picture of.
