shook longer than I thought it would ..... but seemed to gain strength to-wards the end. Dogs went ape-shit. Hope that was it for today and not a pre-cursor ..... gotta get some work done today. Stay safe y'all.

31. Yeah on the computer frantically working and the shaking starts ....
I keep working :) .... the shaking gets worse .... enough to make me finally get off my chair grab the dogs ..... head to-wards the exits thinking maybe we should take cover. Naaaaaaah ..... head outside with the dogs as they go ape-shit. It stops shaking .... I proceed to go check for cracks in the gas line, structure of things around the house. All seems okay. Neighbors were out and about, could hear the talking in the neighborhood. Very nice day outside now, bout 80 degrees and sunny, nice breeze blowing. Awwwwwwww. :hi:

:hi: Unusual mild weather the last few days here. I reside in San Diego and back here too when need be. I've learned the first half of September seems to be the hottest up here and am getting out of town then too. ;) ..... Anyway howdy neighbor! Were you at work when the quake hit a bit ago? Peace.

115. Ah ... Chino Hills .....
I once bought a home in Chino Hills, and lived there 4 years before turning the house over @ 177% of our purchase price ..... Very pleasant locale on a Cul De Sac, with a sweet pool for the kids ....

I really miss it, but oh well ..... shit happens ... I only sold because I was laid off and couldn't afford to pay the note, nor lose it to foreclosure ....

I hope everyone is ok there ..... 5.8 isnt that big, but hey, you never know what might happen ....

foreshocks are pretty rare. 90-95% of the time, the largest quake is first.

certainly enough to rattle teeth for some distance.

It's also within the metro area, so there will undoubtedly be some reports of damage as the day wears on.

My office is in Northridge. Old two story building; just got some cracks in the big one and that's all. Shook back and forth this time pretty good.

in 1994 My house in Agoura shifted off it's foundation and the 2nd story moved over three inches.
Oh, and the chimney broke loose

85. I'm also in Palos Verdes area and

this is the first quake that I've actually felt in the fifteen years I've lived in this house. I thought the epicenter would be much closer than Chino Hills.

I was writing an email to my best friend in Italy when I saw water sloshing in my glass, I managed to type EARTHQUAKE and hit send before dragging the dog to our safe spot. She sometimes accuses me of making my emails too short. I wonder what she'll make of the phony earthquake excuse.

He's still wondering why he was in a leg lock for several minutes.

113. Riots are extremely rare, ...
But mudslides occur after a fire has cleared an ground holding vegetation.
So when the rainy season hits, the ground in the burned out areas, start
to loosen, and a hill collapses. If you were lucky enough to dodge the fire,
you may not be lucky enough to dodge the mudslide.

After a fire, you'll see communities throw tarp over the burned out area
to keep the water from soaking in, until some vegetation has grabbed root.

Swaying back and forth. Still pretty strong.
The strongest I've felt since the '89 quake in SF.

61. Try not to panic on the phone service
Everybody tries to call and system overloads. Plus phones get knocked off-hook and ties up service even more. I have DSL but get fast busy on my landline.
Shaken up here on LA West Side but nothing fell over.

67. CNN just reported that it's been downgraded to 5.4 mag.
Water main breaks, cell phone tower problems, nothing major so far. Twenty-plus aftershocks since the initial quake. Trouble briefly with the ground radar at airports, but that's been resolved, evidently.

It was strong enough to actually throw me off balance (I'm in Century City), and I slipped and bashed the shit out of my left knee.

My first-ever earthquake-related injury! :7

95. My phone conversation during the earthquake.
I was on the phone to my mom (another Cal native):

Me - Oh hang on. We're having an earthquake.

Mom - Really?

Me - I've got to go to Sears and take back this god-damn crock
pot .... shit this earthquake is still going.

Mom - Is it pretty strong? What's wrong with that god-damn crock
pot? Is it still shaking.

Me - Oh the fucker doesn't work for shit. Still shaking. Oh cool
it stopped. I'll go get lunch after I got to Sears.

Mom - Well where are you going to lunch?

81. Burbank checking in- not too bad here.
I was asleep on my couch when it hit-
I woke up real early this morning and started
reading. I think my fur people knew it was coming.
They woke me up all a-twitter around day break.

I fed them and went back to sleep.

Next thing I knew, the living room was rocking and rolling.

It was gentle, but lengthy.

Not bad at all compared to the Northridge quake.

87. Nice little ride here in Silver Lake...
(That's 2 miles NW of downtown, 2 miles SE of Hollywood for you furriners...)

We're on a hilltop on a rock foundation and it was quite a little ride: a quick jolt, then a pause, then a 15 second or so rolling shaker. It felt much like the Northridge quake of '94 and the Whittier Narrows quake of '87, but was shorter and farther away than the latter and shorter and much farther away than the former.

Goes with the territory...

108. Wolf"s Dilemma: Size Matters
The problem with the Situation Room is that they don't have much by way of actual destruction to show what happened. All they have is broken jars in aisle 3 of the hardware store, and water coming down from a big water leak coming down from the ceiling that may or may not have anything to do with the miniquake. Wolf is all dressed up with nowhere to go.

I was in the lobby of our 2nd story suite waiting for my boss to clear a call so we could meet with co-works in their 18th floor office. I felt the initial shaking and realized they were the compression waves and knew the swaying (S-waves)would be kind of hairy. When we finally got upstairs those guys were pale!
