California lawmaker wants building officials to consider feng shui
http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2004/01/31/news/state/1_30_0421_41_16.txt

SAN FRANCISCO -- More hippy, dippy jokes about California might be on the way, thanks to a state lawmaker who wants building codes to consider feng shui.

State Assemblyman Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, has introduced a resolution that urges public building officials to accommodate feng shui -- the ancient Chinese art of designing structures and arranging objects to create harmonious energy flow.

(snip)

The resolution isn't meant to become law or force cities to change how buildings are constructed. Instead, Yee said, it would simply encourage building officials to accommodate the concept and be more sensitive to a cultural practice that can improve environments where people live and work.

For example, some homeowners haven't been able to put doors on certain sides of their houses because local building laws don't accommodate their feng shui-based preference, Yee said.

(snip)

"The Legislature should be less focused on what goes into a new home and more on making sure that enough new homes are built," said John Frith, a spokesman for the California Building Industry.

1. This is the thing that kills me...
feng shei is very cool...why not consider it? There are millions of ugly ass buildings in America now. Not only are they ugly, they are of poor design and usually a strip mall.

15. It shouldn't be codified
Being cool is not necessarily the way to go to make laws.

2. I went on a feng shui website that showed how to position
your desk in your office based on your birthdate and other factors. It told me to put my desk right smack in front of the door. No one would have been able to get in. Then again, maybe it had a point.

8. That is BAD Feng Shui...
A desk in an office should ALWAYS be placed in one of the "power positions" in a room -- not directly in line with a door, but still facing it. Executives in the 80s discovered the power position and used it effectively. It's still being used today.

3. I like Feng Shui......
it makes your living space and office space more relaxing because it helps your Qi (energy) flow freely. And The Goddess knows my energy needs room to flow freely!

10. Leland Yee...
was a longtime member of the SF Board of Supervisors -- and I can say absolutely he is NO radical. :)

He's a middle-aged American of Chinese descent who understands that Feng Shui is an ancient practice that is of vital importance to the growing Asian American community of California.

Kudos to Leland!

My house is a Feng Shui NIGHTMARE -- the kitchen & bathroom sets in the money area of the house -- all those DRAINS. :) I've been hoping to get a professional in someday to help out.

9. Gee, if feng shui were to be followed
and a representation of all the money California doesn't have were to be placed in the SE corner of every CA gov't building, both new and old design, then the chi to increase wealth would be amplified and California could once again prosper. </sarcasm>

Feng Shui bowing and thanks! Guess it all depends on which feng shui path California must follow to maximize its advantage in all governmental areas. :+

on edit: NE is the "correct" placement. I was incorrect! Am now moving all of my lottery tickets to the NE corner of home.

13. Ridiculous...
I agree with the industry guy John Frith--more homes.

Feng Shui is fraud--simply graft that for centuries it's practitioners would get huge pay-offs to put 'hexes' on buildings!

It's also quasi-religious and as such why should one culture's religion have reflection in law and not any others...
Why not a law to have priest bless buildings like in the good old days...I am sure the clergy would love the donation...
