Nine face stoning death in Iran
Source: bbc

At least eight women and one man are reported to have been sentenced to death by stoning in Iran.

The group, convicted of adultery and sex offences, could be executed at any time, lawyers defending them say.

The lawyers have called on the head of Iran's judiciary to prevent the sentences from being carried out.

--------------------------

The eight women sentenced, whose ages range from 27 to 43, had convictions including prostitution, incest and adultery, Reuters news agency reported.

22. Welll ... We do have capital punishment here ....
The poster was correct to point that out .... I don't see that poster inferring that stoning or prostitution was related to that fact ... Just stating a simple fact ....

17. cannibals
Edited on Sun Jul-20-08 01:23 PM by MullenBank

There are differences in cultures worth noting; if there are no differences, if you can't say this is superior to that then cannibals are quakers are nazis are greeks are goths are builders are savages.

Take, for instance, any part of the world where the wheel, the pulley and the inclined plane constitute local high tech-- folks bleed red too. My O- positive blood could save a life there. The difference therefore must be the culture-- what it produces or whether it produces anything at all.

Carefully, now...

The Western world has produced, due to its culture of free inquiry, protection of property rights and rule of law, the longest sustained increase in human wealth and happiness as charted by any reasonable measure, in the history of the world. putting on nomex

Westerners should not feel guilty for being successful nor be too complacent regarding the permanency of Western culture. History is mostly ppl kicking down barns and not building them.

In the instant, it's no secret the mullahs despise women. They despise sexuality and sensuality and I detest their philosophy that makes it possible for them to justify the degradation of women.

Unless maybe you think its more civilized to burn your infidels alive.

It was reason, not adherence to christianity that brought Europe out of the dark ages.

This is barbaric, and should be condemned. One sin does not mean silence about all others.

5. When was the last time the US stoned a prostitute?
Jumping Jeremiah that argument is so stale!

I'm against the DP in all cases as well, but I'm not going to sit here and say that it's the same thing to execute someone for murder as it is to execute someone for adultery.

7. What Coventina said
Cheating on your spouse (or with someone else's spouse) is not the same as shooting someone in the head at a 7-11, or raping and murdering a co-ed.

12. Maybe it's even worse.
I wonder if a man shooting another man in a robbery would earn him such a barbaric punishment as being stoned to death? Or, is the worst punishment held out for loose women?

15. We execute prostitutes, gays and drug users?
your sense of proportion seems to be broken. Didn't I just read that the supreme court ruled that only murderers can be execute - even child rapist can't be executed. Don't you seen any difference between Iran and America in regards to capital punishment or are you more concerned with criticizing America that you have lost all sense of proportion.

21. Once again....
...I find that the fictional world of Star Trek with it's Prime Directive is instructive. Because clearly no "primitive society" who are still using the stones of prehistoric humanity like this one, should be allowed to have advanced technology. Like nuclear weapons.

- And by primitive society, I mean EARTH....

24. As a long term, dedicated atheist ...
I despise these draconian, theologically-based sentences for victimless crimes ....

Mankind CAN have a system of laws based on a humanistically generated code of law that has nothing to do with 'holy books' and 'revelation' ...

Man should take all the holy books residing in courts of law, and toss them into a mighty shitcan ....

This isn't justice .. this is all about ego ....

Please consider joining Amnesty International which campaigns against such human rights abuses.

www.amnesty.org/en/region/middle-east-and-north-africa/east-gulf/iran ·

www.amnestyusa.org/all-countries/iran/page.do?id=1011172&n1=3&n2=30&n3=922

They also campaign against the DP everywhere, including the USA.

Speaking as a citizen of a country that abolished the DP 40 years ago - I don't think that one can deny that the penal code *is* much worse in Iran than the USA. Which is of course no excuse for having the DP anywhere.

32. Another "liberation" by the Bushes...
The CIA orchestrated the removal of the Shah believeing Khomeini offered a better deal on the oil. They have done that before in Iran. Removing the Shah then putting the Shah back. In the 1950s.

The CIA orchestrated the removal of Saddam Hussein believing a new government would offer a better deal on the oil.

We have plunged both countries into the Dark Ages of Islam which we hypocritically claim we are liberating Afghanistan from.

It's all about the oil. But all these years later we still do not have the Iranian oil. And never will. And we will never have the Iraqi oil either. The "millions of lives for billions of barrels" policy of the Bushes in the end has proven a complete disaster. As has every other policy of the Bushes from the point Prescott Bush wrote the first check to Fritz Thyssen who of course used it to fund the Nazi Party.

And the Democrats have been just as complicit along the way as the Republicans.

Oh. Sorry. Wrong religion.

So "Stone 'em" - just as called for in The Bible (condescendingly called the "'Old' Testament" by some) and The Koran (sorry: القرآن - as we know الله, Praise Be To His Name, only speaks in Arabic).

Just think about that kind of death for a moment. How frightening and painful it would be. Think too of what sort of monster would actually cast the first, and the last, stone.

Gods, your religions are such wonderful guides for humanity.

If only America could live by Your Law. Soon enough perhaps?

God (al-rahman, al-rahim) Bless.
