Bush to G8: 'Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter'
Source: The Independent

President George Bush signed off with a defiant farewell over his refusal to accept global climate change targets at his last G8 summit.

As he prepared to fly out from Japan, he told his fellow leaders: "Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter."

President Bush made the private joke in the summit's closing session, senior sources said yesterday. His remarks were taken as a two-fingered salute from the President from Texas who is wedded to the oil industry. He had given some ground at the summit by saying he would "seriously consider" a 50 per cent cut in carbon emissions by 2050.

But green groups had protested that the meeting was a missed opportunity to secure the radical reductions in carbon emissions that were needed to reduce global warming. China and India, who were among the emerging economies invited to the summit, refused to sign up to binding agreements without firmer commitments from the US and the other industrialised nations to cut their CO2 emissions.

20. I think that's an insult to children. At least a child has the
excuse of being young and inexperienced when they behave like little horrors.

But I agree with your point that Cheney holds the reins and merely gives Bush little pats on the head while calling him "The Decider".

Did you ever see that SNL skit where Cheney et al is deciding policy while Bush plays with a ball of yarn in the corner? F-U-N-N-Y. But probably an insult to cats.

I can't actually think of ANY living creature Bush could be compared to that wouldn't insult the other life form--- including black mold and the ebola virus.

22. Yep, same thing
Sort of like the two-fingered "peace" sign, but with the hand turned so that the fingernails face outward.

There's a popular myth that it derives from the battle of Agincourt, where the French would routinely cut the first and second fingers off any English archers they captured, so that they couldn't use their bows. The myth states that the English archers would hold up their fingers as a gesture of contempt to the French when they failed to capture them. This is historical fancy, however, and there is no record of the French mutilating their captives in this way.

Source: Telegraph.co.uk

The American leader, who has been condemned throughout his presidency for failing to tackle climate change, ended a private meeting with the words: "Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter."

He then punched the air while grinning widely, as the rest of those present including Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy looked on in shock.

Palm forward is the victory sign (or the peace sign), but if you turn your hand around so the back is facing the other person, that's the same as sticking your middle finger up here in the US. That's what they mean by "the two-fingered salute".

59. My favorite description of the Chimp from a DU member, saved a year or so ago:
“I've never before found myself actually cringing when the so-called president of the United States goes out in public and ‘does his thing.’

There was always at least some semblance of dignity and elegance and refinement, and the gravitas that automatically comes with that high office.

THIS guy, on the other hand, brings to it all the couth of Larry the Cable Guy at a Chug-a-Lug and Fart contest.”

62. Not defending the ass-clown, but it seems the entire summit was one big joke and the
earth was given the finger by the major industrialized nations. Obviously another "Frail grasp on the big picture". :banghead:

http://www.plentymag.com/blogs/political/2008/07/joking_around_at_the_g8.php

snip>

Still, Bush wasn’t the only one clowning around at the conference. Sure, the developed countries agreed to new stronger-than-ever language committing them to cut global greenhouse emissions in half by 2050. The G8 leaders touted the move as “a significant step forward”. In fact, though, it was little more than a token shuffle: The new policy contains virtually nothing that wasn’t already present in the goals signed up to by more than 200 nations way back in 1992, at the UN’s first climate summit.

Besides failing to endorse emission cuts at the levels scientists say are needed to avert catastrophe, the G8 nations were hopelessly vague about how and when to take action, and refused to make any kind of binding commitment even to their own watered-down emissions targets. That led greens to dismiss the plan as “pathetic”; even the UK government’s own carbon-reduction agency blasted the G8 nations, saying the summit had failed to do “a single thing” to reduce carbon emissions, and accusing all concerned - including Prime Minister Brown - of “an abrogation of responsibility."

Most damningly of all, the G8 plan utterly failed to address the issue of how to divide up emissions cuts between industrialized and developing nations - the single most important question for any serious climate strategy. That led the big emerging economies - Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa - to scoff at the conference, calling for the developed world to aim higher and cut emissions by more than 80 percent by mid-century.

The Hokkaido summit only served to underscore the G8’s increasing irrelevance: The leaders of the world’s biggest developed economies failed to provide any leadership, and had to be nudged by developing nations to live up to their international responsibilities. It’s clear, sadly, that Bush’s buffoonery was entirely in keeping with the spirit of the summit. The entire conference was a bad joke, and America’s outgoing president merely provided the punch-line.
