Supreme Court won't issue stay in Colorado redistricting fight

STEVEN K. PAULSON, Associated Press Writer
Thursday, January 29, 2004

(01-29) 15:27 PST DENVER (AP) --
The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a GOP request for a stay that would have blocked a redrawn congressional map that favors Democrats.

Republicans will not pursue a stay from another judge and will wait until the high court decides whether to take up the dispute over the map, said Senate President John Andrews, a Republican.

Justice Stephen Breyer, who is responsible for Colorado, issued the ruling.

Because of the decision, Secretary of State Donetta Davidson likely will use the same map during this election cycle that was used for congressional elections two years ago.

4. The way I read the article is that the justice
who is responsible for the state decides whether to grant a stay or not, but the whole Supreme Court may look at the case later.

5. The Supreme Court already
refused a stay for the democrats in Texas. Looks like Texas is gonna get a lot more republican congressmen.

9. I not so sure of that...
people in Texas are getting mad just like everywhere else. We
may lose a couple of seats, but I doubt the 7 seats that pestman
thought he was stealing.

6. Good decision
...both here and in Texas, actually. SCOTUS has no business getting involved in state congressional districting. It would amount to too much centralization of power, no matter who's in charge.

8. I just want the SCOA to establish a consistent application,...
,...with respect to redistricting. The abuses are pissing me off, they are pissing off the American people!!! The political power-mongering is a battle that is tearing this country apart. Good gawd, let us find a way to curb this crap in an impactful way. I say, remove immunities and subject all career politicians to a reasonable standard of serving the American people. Those "immunities" were created in a time when "the people" were uninformed and ignorant and uneducated. Now, the time has come to really put a truer democracy to the test, in my humble view.

10. What were the effects
of this redistricting, I don't remember. Democratic states should simply start throwing out the old lines and quickly draw new ones that strongly favor their party. Bet that would put an end to this bullshit fast. When are they going to realize that we truly are at war and its not against foreign terrorists.
