Georgia Senate Votes for Zell Miller Statue
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 06:28 PM by kskiska
What was expected to be a simple state Senate resolution to form a commission to begin the process of erecting a statue of U.S. Sen. Zell Miller at the state Capitol turned into a discussion on race Thursday.

State Sen. Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta) tried to amend the resolution to also honor Henry McNeal Turner, a black man who in 1868 briefly served as a Republican state representative, before being expelled from the Legislature.

"When I peruse the grounds of the state Capitol it is not difficult to notice no statuary that honors an African-American," Fort said. "This amendment seeks to solve that. Turner was one of the great Georgians in this state."

(snip)

"I didn't know much about Turner until today," said Stephens, sponsor of the original resolution. "I think he should be honored, but not this way. Not today. Zell Miller has a unique place in history. Turner's history is unique, but Miller's is more unique. That is what we want to honor."

Stephens then urged his colleagues to vote "against the Republican and for the Democrat."

23. MAYBE THEY COULD PUT JUDGE MOORE'S NEXT TO IT
An idiot's commandments monument next to the statue of an idiot. Maybe Saxby Chambliss could cut the ribonns dedicating both of them.

2. A statue. To cost how much? Georgia in the black?
Really, what a strange thing to do. Unless they are anticipating his early demise?

25. Who are they and where is "down there"?
Is that a subtle southern slant? Some Democrats still consider the South an important ingredient of winning the White House.

32. Since Ga nearly stretches to the Gulf of Mexico it is "down there"
to most of the country.

And if you question the "devolving" remark you don't need to look any farther back than yesterday's news about not the ciriculum not including evolution.

Then look at Zell Miller, Saxby Chamblis and Sonny Purdue.

I'm ashamed to say I live in Georgia.

9. more RNC marketing stuff
What do you want to bet this is some republican stunt to make it look like only a conservative Dem can make it in Georgia. If you read the story, the only people backing the statue are Republicans. The Dems wanted to honor a real Dem.

I say this is somehting cooked up by the marketing people at the RNC.

Come to think of it, I wouldn't think a statue of a giant dick would be allowed in a religious state like Georgia.

16. As a Georgia taxpayer
I have no objection to this project so long as the statue is anatomically correct, i.e., his head is in the "right" place and his state of chronic dicklessness is portrayed.

After all, a statue of only the rear end of a horse costs a lot less than a statue of a whole horse.

21. Against the Republican and for the Democrat?
Stephens then urged his colleagues to vote "against the Republican and for the Democrat."

What Democrat?! Stephens was a Republican, back in 1868, when it was still respectable. As for Miller... what's his excuse?

If SUVs are bad enough to warrant vandalism then Zell must be double the deal.

26. Zell, evolution

Here's the connections

Zell got the governorship by whoring himself to the lottery industry

Lottery got approved by promising to improve education

Education in Georgia is soon to drop all mention of evolution

And Zell is the missing link.

34. Bad enough that everyone's honoring living people...
instead of waiting a respectable period after their death to erect monuments, name courthouses, etc. but it really ticks me off how often we now enshrine people still holding political office. Here in New York we now have the "Joseph L. Bruno" baseball stadium, named after the current leader of the State Senate.
