Romney tops McCain veep list
Source: Politico

Surprising many Republican insiders, Mitt Romney is at the top of the vice-presidential prospect list for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). But lack of personal chemistry could derail the pick.

“Romney as favorite” is the hot buzz in Republican circles, and top party advisers said the case is compelling.

Campaign insiders say McCain plans to name his running mate very shortly after Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) does, as part of what one campaign planner called a “bounce-mitigation strategy.”

... One of the chief reasons the Massachusetts governor is looking so attractive is his ability to raise huge amounts of money quickly through his former business partners and from fellow members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons.

1. Romney was the worst of that field.
Romney as his veep pick will seal McCain's doom.

33. Romey's interested in running for president himself in four years
Mounting a campaign, albeit failed, with McCain would be the best step for him to take.

2. Why doesn't Obama announce that he plans to announce his pick shortly
after McLame does, and then there will be an interesting stalemate.

28. McLame could stall until the GOP convention. Obama has to go first.
Obama pretty much has to name his VP first, just because the Democratic Convention meets first.

6. VERY GOOD NEWS. The racists in the South who won't vote for Obama...won't vote for a Mormon either.
This is likely to depress voter turn-out in the Bible Belt, where LDS is still synonymous with "cult." I couldn't be happier about his pick if this is true. I'm disgusted by the reasoning, but ultimately this is WONDERFUL news for Dems in the general election.

7. Come on McCain, DO IT!
I'll egg him on to choose Romney. It will make Obama's chance of winning a whole lot easier. I can hear McCain's concience going: Romney a big business man with lotsa money, and you know how much you love that precious green paper. Yeeeeessss, THE PRECIOUS!

13. I don't think this is true.
Conservatives distrust Romney because his record as governor of Massachusetts was basically center-left. Evangelicals distrust him because he's a heretic, in their view. The constiuencies he brings to the ticket are Mormons (millions of them) and rich people (it really only takes a few). That's why he's attractive from McCain's perspective.

22. Exactly.
So that pretty much leaves rich people. Who also vote Republican. That's why, from my perspective, Mittens is the perfect choice. Plus, it's fun watching him say incredibly stupid shit on camera. The only downside is that he makes McCain look smart in comparison.

26. Everyone should distrust Mittens, 'cause he's a lying sack of crap
Conservatives, moderates and liberals have all been lied to by Mittens. He will tell you that he is exactly what you want him to be. But everything he does is all about him, voters be damned.

Gawd, I hate that POS. :grr:

32. I know that the local talk radio guy, Jay Severin
was foaming at the mouth when Mitt dropped out. Jay said there were no more "real conservatives" in the race anymore.

Yeah, he flopped, but somehow he sold the conservatives on the idea that he was one of them.

15. The GOP party insiders won't let Romney go.
Edited on Mon Jun-30-08 10:38 AM by ReadTomPaine
He's not popular with rural voters. He's not popular with urban voters. He's not popular with religious voters. Even his core, corporate demographic is a bit cool on him. But he's damn popular with GOP strategists and beltway operatives, isn't he?

I hate to say this, but it reminds me of Poppy.

I can't see McCain picking someone who would constantly steal the spotlight for which he's waited sooo long.

27. Not a surprise at all
I have seen a number of places that state that the key is Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio. They all said that the winner in the fall will get 2 of these 3 states. I assume they think he can deliver Michigan. I don't see that happening though.
