Former Iraqi Officers Angered by Police Crackdown

BAQUBA, Iraq (Reuters) - After a bomb exploded in the volatile Iraqi town of Baquba on Thursday, a police crackdown angered the usual suspects -- jobless army officers increasingly frustrated by the U.S.-led occupation.

U.S.-backed police swept through one of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s former military housing complexes, searching homes and questioning men in a move that ex-officers say could backfire one day.

"They come here, they search our homes. They take my Kalishnikov and now I can't protect my family against thieves. I have no job," said former Lieutenant Mohammad Attiyah.

"If the Americans keep it up they will only push people here to join the guerrillas and fight them. There is nothing else to do here."
