McCain Adviser: Another Attack on U.S. Would Be "Big Advantage" For McCain
Source: The Huffington Post

Fortune Magazine is running a profile on John McCain titled, "The evolution of John McCain." McCain's chief advisor, Charlie Black, is interviewed in the piece. Below is a choice quote from Black on why he thinks another terrorist attack on US soil would help McCain win the presidency.

On national security McCain wins. We saw how that might play out early in the campaign, when one good scare, one timely reminder of the chaos lurking in the world, probably saved McCain in New Hampshire, a state he had to win to save his candidacy - this according to McCain's chief strategist, Charlie Black. The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December was an "unfortunate event," says Black. "But his knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who's ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us." As would, Black concedes with startling candor after we raise the issue, another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. "Certainly it would be a big advantage to him," says Black.

1. Not in my book
Another attack would be a serious disadvantage for the party which told us it was keeping us safe... would put the lie to the gazillions wasted and all the liberties destroyed by the Department of Fatherland Security... oops Homeland Security.

2. That premise is just sick. As if McSame would or could fend off
any attack on this country......he wouldn't know what to do if an attack were cyber in nature.

...and he wants to continue that course.

13. Discussing this on CNN now...
Appears to be seen as political blunder. Showing McCain disavowing the comment during a news conference, but also talking about how Black may have had a point, despite the comment's harshness.

14. After 9/11, I stopped criticizing Bush for 6 months
I should not have done that.

If another 9/11 occurs, Obama, Democratic politicians and left bloggers need to make it clear that they will be ruthless in their criticisms of this Administration's policies immediately as soon as the attck takes place.

16. Bush's "advisors" made similar statements repeatedly in 2004.
I never understood then why people didn't find it creepy in the extreme, and I don't understand it now. But I suppose that McCain's people are using the tactic because it worked for W. last time.

18. And don't forget this immortal Cheney-ism:
Cheney: Kerry Victory Is Risky
Democrats Decry Talk as Scare Tactic

By Dana Milbank and Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writers
Wednesday, September 8, 2004

COLUMBIA, Mo., Sept. 7 -- Vice President Cheney warned on Tuesday that if John F. Kerry is elected, "the danger is that we'll get hit again" by terrorists, as the Bush campaign escalated a furious assault on the Democratic presidential nominee that has kept Kerry from gaining control of the election debate.

17. How twisted are they anyway???
So this is how screwed up their thinking is. I've heard a LOT (from conservatives) about how this race will be a choice between "a black man and a white man," hoping racism will save them from a lackluster candidate (McYellowteeth). NOW they seem to be hoping for a terrorist attack on America, too. I guess more dead Americans is "worth it" to keep a Micropublican in charge.

22. So let me get this straight...
Having the United States get attacked would be a good thing for McCain? So, running with this logic, the worse the attack, the better it would be for McCain? That's a cheerful thought...

It's statements like that that show just how incredibly backwards the Republican Party has become. Rather than wanting to do everything possible to keep American citizens safe, they'd much rather keep us on the edge of our seats in constant terror. It wouldn't surprise me at all if on election day, Bush raises the threat level to Neon Glow in the Dark Red and has troops in full chemical gear standing outside of all the polling places.

the father from Chicago. They kept it in the news forever. Here is an asshole that just about advocates another attack, and what is going to happen with it. The guy says it was .."inappropriate." Mc Cain says the same. Is the asshole media going to forget that it ever happened?

26. An attack before the election would benefit Obama for sure,
BUT an attack before the inauguration of Obama would benefit the sitting President who would declare martial law, round up all "suspected terrorists" (anyone who's ever said anything outrageous on a site like DU, for example) and put them in detention centers (concentration camps that are already built right here in Merka), and pull the plug on 232 years of our experiment in representative government (Sorry, Nancy and Harry, you're gonna lose your jobs too).

The mechanism is in place. It's just waiting to be activated.

Those fascist bastards play for keeps.

Everybody think about what we could do to prevent it. It's important.

I see a real split in the Republican party. Black thinks the strategy to winning is to have someone blow us up. William Kristol thinks it is to have Bush blow up Iraq.
