BAGHDAD, June 23 (Reuters) - One U.S. soldier was killed and five others were wounded by small arms fire southeast of Baghdad on Monday, the U.S. military said, quoting initial reports.

Iraqi security officials in Baghdad said a local official in the town of Madaen, 30 km (20 miles) southeast of Baghdad, had shot at U.S. soldiers who had gone to visit him. An Iraqi soldier at the scene confirmed this account to Reuters.

A U.S. military spokesman, Lieutenant David Russell, said the incident took place in the Madaen area.

2. this is so pathetic
We know how "dead." How wounded? All appendages blown away? A shoulder wound?

It is so sad that Americans are not in the streets banging on Bush's door to stop this war.

a few weeks ago, after one tour. One less soldier for Bush's oil war.

7. We must be honest here......
very few people care about dead soldiers any more. The ones that did are even complacent any more. We've become a very self-centered society. If it doesn't personally affect us than we don't care.

(I use the term "we" meaning the majority of Americans - not us here on DU.)

BAGHDAD - A disgruntled local official opened fire Monday on U.S. soldiers attending a municipal council meeting southeast of Baghdad, killing two of them and wounding four other Americans, U.S. and Iraqi officials said.

The assailant died in a hail of gunfire after the attack, which occurred in the town of Madain, also known as Salman Pak, about 15 miles south of Baghdad in an area with a history of Sunni-Shiite tension.

U.S. officials confirmed two American soldiers died and that four Americans, including a civilian interpreter, were wounded.
