Democratic presidential hopeful Al Sharpton declared here Wednesday that he's the "Show Me candidate" who best reflects the concerns of many of Missouri's poor, elderly and minorities.
" I came when people in Missouri needed me," Sharpton said, recounting his earlier visits to the state to about 200 people at an afternoon rally held at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. He called on the crowd to demand of the other Democratic presidential contenders, "Show me where you've been before, show me where you've stood on critical issues like the Patriot Act."
Sharpton was the first of three Democratic presidential hopefuls who stopped in St. Louis Wednesday to launch their bids for Missouri's prize of delegates — the largest among the seven states holding primaries or caucuses on Tuesday, and more than either New Hampshire or Iowa. Those delegates are up for grabs since the state's favorite son, Rep. Richard A. Gephardt, drop his presidential bid after doing poorly in the Iowa caucus Jan. 19.
