New Variant Of Email Virus Found, Targets Microsoft

January 28, 2004

By Stan Orchard

CYBERSPACE - This has not been a good week for those who rely on email and those who maintain the many mail servers around the planet.

Just a few days after the so-called Mydoom/Novarg virus or worm was detected, a new variant has been found out in the wild.

The first version caused all sorts of problems for email users, filling inboxes with virus-spawned messages. It also triggered countless responses from anti-virus software that also led to inboxes filled to overflowing. In addition, the virus crafted an enormous denial of service attack against a controversial Linux distributor, SCO.

But this new variant, dubbed Mydoom.b appears to be crafting an attack on Microsoft's Web site.

This, coupled with that new MS IE security hole, and this is not turning out to be a good day for MS. Someday, perhaps they will learn. :eyes:

1. The US is under attack via it's communication network
And Commander Chimpy is preparing to take another leisurely weekend at Camp David.

He wants more time off to re-read "The Pet Goat," the book that kept him from responding in any meaningful way to the terrorist attack on America on 9/11.

Besides, he needs the extra days to maintain his standing in the Guiness Book of World Records as the "Most Thoroughly Rested President of All Time."

2. No big deal, just let the outsourced software engineers handle the
problem. They should be able to get it fixed in a few months. I could go on and on about my experience with MS tech help in India. In short, I was on the phone for nearly two hours and zero was accomplished.

3. Someday, they will learn to what?
Test their software before release?

4. exactly
test their software, patch security issues prior to a release. Microsoft really lowered the bar for software when they released Windows 95, one of the biggest pieces of garbage ever to take up space on a hard drive. There software is invasive, error prone, memory sucking and full of security holes. Why? Sloppy coding, nothing less.

5. thanks for the post
I just downloaded the third update on my antivirus software in 24 hours -

this is getting tiring, but my 'puter is still healthy :)

Don't use IE or Outlook Express, but still hate the crap that runs around and tries to infect everyone.

6. I have been getting flooded with e-mail from all the antivirus
sites I subscribe to. I tell you I look and I have 3-4 a piece from them..like I didn't see it the first 3 times! I've also been sent Mydoom and Novarg at least 40 times in the last 2 1/2 days. Fortunately I use Mailwasher and can dump them from the mail server but its really beginning to get on my last nerve!
