As court ruling looms, UC dismantles more of tree-top encampment

(06-18) 14:12 PDT BERKELEY -- Amid screams, the buzz of a news helicopter and the rattle of barricades by angry people in the street, UC Berkeley today dismantled more of the tree-top encampment of protesters in a grove of trees next to Memorial Stadium.

A crew of arborists and workers hired by the campus engaged in their second day of cutting ropes, removing supplies and tearing out improvised structures as tree-sitter sympathizers yelled at the workers from Piedmont Avenue and at stern-faced UC police who ringed the site.

She bit the arm of an arborist who was trying to attach duct tape to one of the ropes. The arborist and a co-worker wrestled her into a cherry-picker and handed her over to police, said UC spokesman Dan Mogulof.

Workers and police were pelted several times by human urine and excrement thrown by tree-sitters Tuesday, Mogulof added.

1. As much as I favor protecting
the environment from un-need harm these tree nuts need to go. Tossing human waste is an offensive in every way possible, all I can think of the the caged monkeys at the zoo. The trees were planted there and did not grow naturally and should not be considered a part of the natural environment. If the construction of the new building can increase money inflow to the campus then divert a portion to planting more trees elsewhere.
