House Democrats claim prayer is 'disrespectful' (Arizona Legislature)
http://www.azcentral.com/php-bin/clicktrack/print.php?referer=http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0128prayer28.html

Rep. Doug Quelland, R-Phoenix, caused a stir on Tuesday when he delivered a prayer on the House floor that took aim at multiculturalism, welfare, abortion and "alternative lifestyles."

Quelland: "Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know your word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values. We confess that:

"We have ridiculed the absolute truth of your word and called it pluralism.

"We have worshiped other gods and called it multiculturalism.

"We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle.

"We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.

"We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation.

"We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.

1. It was disrespectful
The gentleman used religion as a tool for furthering his agenda. Of course, having a state sponsored prayer in the first place advances the agenda of promoting religion, which should not be happening but is, with the overwhelming approval of both parties.

2. That's a shitty headline.
I was expecting some sort of protest against the prayer itself.

A better headline would be "Quelland (R-Phoenix) is a Jackass."

We have razed your planet and called it healthy forests.

We have cut education funding and called it no child left behind.

I could go on and on.

4. Here's a chance for Democrats.
Of course, Democrats always take the 'high road' and never have the balls to fire back.

Dear Jesus-
Please help the insensitive assholes in the Republican Party see the errors of their ways.

Help them to come to their senses and stop their mindless attacks on those of other religious, ethnic, and sexual backgrounds.

Make them remember that love of money is the root of all evil.

Make them remember your admonition "whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

Remind these miserly dickwads that it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven.

And most of all, remind Representative Quelland that he is here to represent ALL of his constituents, not just white Aryan Protestants. He also represents blacks, and Asians, and even Hispanics. He represents Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Atheists, and even Catholics.

Amen.

5. those miserable .......
fuckers....

How dare they (the rich) have the right to call anyone on welfare lazy?

Why don't those rich, christian, god-fearing, business people stop sending jobs overseas, and provide adequate jobs at fair wages so people can work and be off welfare?

Because it might cut into their paychecks by being able to buy that 3rd home in the mountains...

You know instead of spending so much time worrying about their money, arn't those rich, god-fearing, christians supposed to be praying for the time they can be with their lord?

The whole frigging lot of them need to eat a steak from a downed cow and then run to the light.....

7. We have made politically-motivated attacks on our own citizens ...
and called it prayer, and done so right on the House floor.

And this is the greatest of the sins.

8. I saw no report of any Republicans
objecting to this devilish 'prayer'. In comparison to the (teen's) onslaught against SUVs I would consider this outrageous plea to Quellands god on a par with same nothing less than political anarchy.

"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and
guidance. We know your word says, 'Beware false prophets and those who come as wolves in sheep's clothing and woe to those who are hypocrites and those who purport to honor you with their tongue while their actions harm those for whom you care deeply, namely those who are the poorest and least fortunate among us.

It is true that our spiritual equilibrium and our national values have been trampled by those who piously pronounce themselves Christian and who subvert the very founding tenets of that religion with their every act. We are heartily sorrowful:

"That the Bush Administration has waged war for monetary gain and worldy empire and maimed and killed tens of thousands of your flock"

"That Mr. Bush has acted as a would be Caesar and demanded complete fealty and a rendering unto him those things which properly belong to God or to our fellow human being."

"That the Bush Administration has attacked others of our fellow human beings without provocation and based on a thicket of lies, and it has masked its bloody deception with the euphemism of "preventive war" and "shock and awe."

"That this administration lavishes billions on corporations in backroom no bid sweetheart deals while willfully ignoring the declining health of its own people and their inabilty to secure basic health care"

" That the already suffering poor have been further harmed by this administration of millionaires which takes delight and pleasure in slashing funds for their housing, education and basic sustenance .

"That this Administration has willfully neglected the neediest and least fortunate in our society so that they may further enrich the richest few of their cohorts."

"That this administration lavishly rewards corporate criminality and the ruthless downsizing and outsourcing of jobs, the ravaging of the environment, and the employment of child labor in third world nations.

"That this administration enacts laws which eliminate any responsibility corporations must bear for the maintenance of society, by shifting their tax responsibility to the working people of this nation and enabling outright thievery by permitting them to use offshore tax havens while they help themselves to heaping helpings of money provided by the fruits of the labors of millions, many of whom they deny the most basic human right to a fair and livable wage for their labors.

However having had the machinery of democracy and a free press hijacked and thwarted by the same rich and powerful people whom this administration serves, we all did the best that we could under the circumstances to stop these evils, and we ask your help and assistance in turning our nation from this ruinous course.

Amen
