McCain plans new overseas trip
Posted: 06:15 AM ET

From CNN Correspondent Dana Bash

(CNN) — John McCain is planning a journey within the next month that will take him to the country's Western Hemisphere neighbors

The itinerary has not been entirely nailed down, but currently includes stops in Canada, Mexico and Colombia.

Those nations have all negotiated trade deals with the United States, although Colombia's agreement - which became a lightning rod during this year's Democratic presidential primaries - has met fierce resistance on Capitol Hill, and has not yet received congressional approval.

Border issues and illegal immigration have been among the most vexing political issues this cycle, especially for McCain. His support for a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants almost fatally wounded his GOP primary bid; it was only after he said "lesson learned" and promised to secure the border first that many Republican voters decided to give him a second chance.

5. McCain Plans July Trip to Colombia

McCain Plans July Trip to Colombia
Elizabeth Holmes reports from Philadelphia on the presidential race.

Republican candidate John McCain will visit Colombia in July, according to a report in the country’s largest daily newspaper, El Tiempo, that was confirmed by Fox News.

The report says the Arizona senator’s one-day trip will include stops in Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena; he has plans to meet with President Alvaro Uribe to talk about trade and other issues of importance to Latin America. Colombia’s trade minister, Luis Guillermo Plata, was in Washington this week pushing for the stalled trade deal with the U.S., but Democratic lawmakers have made it clear they want to see a drop in violence in the country before approving the agreement.

The visit to Colombia will be the Arizona senator’s second overseas trip since he secured his party’s nomination. McCain and two of his best friends in the U.S. Senate went to Iraq and the Middle East in March.

Uribe and McCain appear to have a lot in common.

7. Canada, Mexico, Columbia are "overseas"? Maybe they need an atlas?
Or is he flying to those countries by some odd route? Hey CNN, the Great Circle route from USA to Canada does not involved going "overseas"!
