Clinton Will Drop Out of Presidential Race
Source: ABC News

It's over.

Sen. Hillary Clinton will drop out of the presidential race on Friday, ending her historic bid for the White House and ceding the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama, ABC News has learned.

Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., is the only former first lady to make a historic bid for the White House.

Clinton's decision to leave the race ends a long, often bitter battle for the right to challenge Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in the general election.

5. Better yet
What are the odds that Obama will pick up the votes of the 30% of Hillary supporters who say they will not vote for him?

Time to heal the division within this party lest we get our butts kicked come November.

192. Another ransom note?
Ideals should be traded for a vote? No. We hold these truths to be self-evident - that Barack Obama is the presumptive nominee of the DEMOCRATIC Party.

No matter how hard we try, there won't be any pleasing the 30% who say they won't vote for Barack if they can't logically see that his ideals are closer to their goddess' than McSame's - if they can't see that McSame and the Republican party have committed far more treasonous acts against the people of this country than Barack Obama - if they don't recognize the dangers in another puke administration. There's no pleasing the irrational.

199. Politics
is inherently practical. Ideology and principle gave us right wing fundamentalists. And, apparently, principled and idealistic Obama supporters.

If the Obama camp (and the Obama supporters) do not realize that politics is all about making necessary overtures and compromise to secure power and implement policy then they deserve to get their butts soundly kicked come November.

Obama is the presumptive nominee. Big fucking deal. That ain't worth shit if he gets his ass kicked in November. He will be little more than a historical footnote.

People tend to agree with people they know and like. They like people who are attractive, who are similar to themselves, who extend compliments, and who are associated with positive experiences. When people are unsure they seek social proof and they are most inclined to follow people who are most like themselves. And people tend to respond to those who give something before asking for a return favor. A return favor like a vote perhaps.

Voters, like shoppers, do not necessarily make rational decisions. You offend them they may not come back to your candidate. They may opt to stay home. Or worse.

207. No
Ideals and principles give us a party and a platform and a framework for conducting business. There's a difference between ideals and ideology. Apparently you haven't noticed.

But you're right, voters, like shoppers, do not necessarily make rational decisions. You offend them, they may not come back. But you're failing to mention the customers who are more trouble than they're worth. No business wants to see them walk through the door again because when they do, they lose money. There's no amount of bending over, kissing their feet or worshiping the ground they walk on will make them happy plus they only succeed in making the shopping experience miserable for other customers.

Truthfully, we don't need them. But if you want to kiss their backside, please, be my guest.

214. You
certainly do not have to kiss anybody's backside.

But I sure as hell ain't hiring you for any kind of retail or sales or customer service or advertising position. Without those damned customers there wouldn't be a business.

I say that as a self employed schmuck whose only income is derived from selling my services to customers. In the small business world every customer is important. Some are important because they provide income. Some are important because they provide referrals or other forms of support. Some are important because they have the ability to keep other customers away.

You think some customers are not worth the effort? Maybe that is true for a customer service employee in a high volume low margin discount retailer that sells imported crap and doesn't give a fuck about anything but the bottom line.

Given a choice between buying an item from somebody who at least pretends to further some of their interests and priorities and buying the same item from somebody who doesn't give a damn, most customers are going to buy from the guy who at leasts pretends to be interested in their needs. Especially if the initial cost is the same.

Elections are no different. Everyone has one vote to spend. A candidate and his supporters offend them or demean them or ignore them at their own risk. They are wrong to assume those voters will rationally come to their eventual support. Many of the most effective techniques of persuasion have little to do with reason. Without those damned voters there will not be an Obama presidency.

Time to go wait on some customers isn't it?

222. No
I did not say that Obama himself personally demeaned Clinton supporters. Nor did I imply that. But there are probably at least a "brazillion" examples here on DU of Obama supporters being nasty and demeaning those who did not support their candidate. Candidates are all too often punished because of the actions of their supporters.

Nothing new about that. Would you place an order in a restaurant where the waiter or waitress had bad body odor, dirty greasy hair, unkempt and dirty clothing and dirty hands and fingernails. Probably not. You might not even use the urinal. Like it or not the help (paid or unpaid) is a reflection of the restaurant - or the candidate as the case may be. When supporters are nasty it reflects poorly on their candidate.

Guess what? The Obama camp got the nomination. It is not time to gloat about that - it is time to mend fences with those Dems who did not support Obama. Why? Because they should be inclined to support and work for the Obama campaign. After all, winning the battle for the nomination becomes completely unimportant if Obama goes down to defeat in November. Competition within the party must now take a back seat in order to secure a November win.

I don't blame Obama personally just because he happens to have some obnoxious supporters. Every candidate I have ever seen has had at least a few. And there definitely are no exceptions during this election cycle.

However, it is now Obama's responsibility as the presumptive nominee to initiate the healing process in the party. He has been quite gracious in how he had addressed Hillary and in awaiting her withdrawal. What he has yet to do effectively is to reach out to Dems who supported other candidates including Hillary. I do expect him to do that at the convention. However, given the particular rancor of this primary season it might be a good move to exercise that initiative now. Even if it is only in some symbolic manner.

The healing process in this party needs to start now. It is the responsibility of those who prevailed to initiate that process. The candidate and his supporters need to reach out to those in the party who did not support his nomination.

No, you can't control their reaction or how the effort will be received. But you need to realize that there are Dems who do not think Obama represents their interests and priorities. Each candidate had a different agenda and a different vision. There are Dems who supported other candidates in the primaries and they grieve. That is true for supporters of every candidate that did not secure the nomination. You will find some Kucinich and Edwards supporters, for example, to be just as unexcited about an Obama candidacy as some Hillary supporters. This has been an unusually long and rancorous primary season. Many of these folks are hurt.

You don't ask a cut finger to bandage itself - and the longer a wound is allowed to fester without treatment the more difficult it is to heal.

"Time to heal the division within this party..."

And the best place to begin doing that is here.

The sooner we ourselves can stop sniping at each other and imposing our "most righteous and absolute" opinions about why one or the other Democrat sucks, the sooner we ourselves can begin the healing.

...and yet, I just don't see that happening until tombstones begin to get thrown around like just so many pennies from a pocket.

What my daughter use to call me because she said all I needed was the braids and horns and I would look like that. That was when she was young and thought that was funny. And you have to understand I am very fair, while her and my son are darker complexion. (reverse prejudice) Now her and my son's nickname for me is "Brooklyn" because I never admit to being afraid, even when I am. I admit that it is true and don't mind the name. In fact, I kind of like it because it fits me. ;)

so opera singers tend to be larger women, a common colloquialism refers to an opera singer as a fat lady, the poster referred to Hillary's nomination as "not over til the fat lady" sings. Can we correctly deconstruct your offense is based on the fact that the expression uses the moniker "fat lady" to refer to opera singers, thefore reducing their identity to a term describing their weight?

Or is it that describing women based on their weight is sexist? Both?

Either way, you have to extrapolate by two or more degrees to get offended by that. Seems to be as much of a waste of energy as my linguistic analysis of your outrage.

Expend your energy elsewhere, such as asking the Clinton campaign to refudn your contribution. I know I would; I would geel ripped off and incensed if I found out the money went to a candidate who seems hell bent on setting feminism back 30 years.

of opera singers as large women; large not necessarily being fat but sometimes. Growing up going to the opera, I was a bit enchanted by those women because they had such presence and power. People loved them, and it seemed strange to me seeing them worshipped while in every day life fat people were ridiculed.

180. Simply because
it is a "common colloquialism" doesn't mean it isn't sexist. And there are many photos of real female opera singers that are not as insulting as this.

There are many common colloquialisms that are insulting to women. You will notice that the vast majority of them are not meant as compliments. Every time a male coach, or drill sargent, for example, wants to "shame" the team or troops, he refers to them, with a sneer on his face, as "girls" or "ladies".

223. It is not "an opera reference"
It is a reference that came about surrounding opera.

Because a phrase is in common usage, or has been around for a long time, does not mean it is acceptable for all time.

At one time, terms as racist and repulsive as "tar baby" or "sammy" were in common usage too. People finally, at long last, learned that terms like those, and many others (macaca comes to mind), were completely unacceptable.

Sexist references are still common, though, and many, don't even recognize them AS sexist.

226. I don't disagree with your post as a whole but
The fat lady singing has nothing to do with sexism whatsoever:

"It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings is a proverb, essentially meaning that one shouldn't assume the outcome of some activity (frequently a sports game) until it has actually finished.

This phrase in turn refers to the impression by many that at the end of every opera, an aria is sung by a heavy-set woman dressed like a valkyrie. A famous example of this is Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen (aka the Ring cycle). This is a set of four separate operas (lasting about 15 hours), in which the final scene includes Brünnhilde (a very large Valkyrie) singing, and then riding onto Siegfried's funeral pyre. The set collapses and the entire cycle ends up in the Rhine river, where it started. The "fat lady" is often illustrated with a horned helmet, a spear, possibly a shield, and possibly blond braids (to suggest Scandinavian ancestry)."

Word is that he among others called her and told her what they thought. Also, the word on MSNBC was that some of her supporters were angry over her speech last night and let her know on her web site. Evidently today was not what she expected, so hopefully this is all true and she has finally came to the decision that for the sake of the country she will concede. I will wait until Friday and see what happens. In the mean time I will now zip my lip and talk about anything else but Hillary.

That the call from her supporters was for her to step aside and I guess you were one of those who did. I heard one of the people say that the Clinton's supporters in Congress was shocked last night at her speech. They were supposedly called today by some of her top campaign advisors and asked to call her to talk to her about dropping out. The advisors said that the Clintons were so angry that they were not seeing the reality of the moment. I don't know if this is true or not, just what they said.

110. Then why not make the speech TODAY?
Why is it that every other candidate does just fine making their concession speech on the night the polls close, often just hours after the polls close? Why does this woman expect to be treated any different than other candidates who have lost, and why does everybody treat her with kid gloves?

The reason she is pushing it off to Friday is because she still believes that "something could happen" to change things.

We all know what's going to happen on Friday. Her "concession speech" will be no more definitive than the last 5 concession speeches she was supposed to have given.

At this point, it really doesn't matter. Wake me up if she says anything significant.

There is a thread here today attacking Barack on the trial that ended today here in Illinois and I wonder if she is hoping that they can blow this all up somehow and cause all the supers to change their minds. I am just sick of all this. I don't think Barack is involved in this stuff, but I think if the repubs and clinton can they will create something. I trust very little people, and even less politicians.

Edited to add: It could also be just that this gives her the spotlight for two more days. If you notice the news is not about Barack being the first African American nominee for president, it is about Hillary and why she doesn't concede. Uggggh. Imagine Jan Brady and hear her as she says "Hillary...Hillary...Hillary."

If Hillary does NOT concede, her own Superdelegates will flip to Obama and she will be humiliated publicly. She has a narrow window to get out with her dignity intact.

Now it is Saturday in DC...

So more of her thousands of "supporters" can attend.

Should we expect shouts of "Denver, Denver?"

Or perhaps chants of "Count Every Vote?"

Hillary wants it to be HER day with HER supporters, hmmmm.
and what was she doing trying to pre-empt Barack Obama's historic day?

LOL. This just gets funnier and funnier.

And the Clinton's get lower and lower.

14. Drop out? I think she was voted out...
The voters spoke Hillary Clinton and you lost. I really gave her the benefit of the doubt that after one of the candidates reached 2118 as she always said, the nomination process would be over. After watching her speech last night, I lost all respect for her. Her inability to concede gracefully and give Obama his moment indicated to me that she is both indecisive and passive aggressive.

Hopefully Obama is smart enough to remove her from any VP short list. I was ambivalent before, but now I am certain is would be a bad idea.

Sure you might have scored 21 points in the second half to there zero. But they ran up the score to 28 in the first half. No ... it was NOT a narrow victory. It was sealed in the first half and you were playing against their second and third string in the second. YOU LOST ... DEAL WITH IT!!!

I mean, even after any moran with 20 digits could count her inability to win enough votes, and even after the USA networks and the world news run stories saying Obama is the Nominee, ole Hill is still holding meetings and sending envoys to beg for a ticket spot, and promising to concede then changing her mind, then attempting to hold "the party" hostage to a spot on the ticket..
and now, still, she clings desperately to the spotlight until the end of the week. As if the whole country is holding its breath in suspense about who won.

It's going to be kind of a weird aboutface for her to find anything nice to say about Obama after she's run such a negative campaign, savaging him with every imaginable insult and criticism. Her nastiness extended to favoring McCain over Obama. It was a fatal flaw. But she did not attack him in EVERY imaginable way. I can imagine a LOT of things that she did not say.

If she stops this nonsense now, endorses, and then gets out of the way, ... we'll be fine.

There I defended Hillary, that's ecumenical deed for the day.

I was watching the democratic rules committee hearing the other day and Ickes said that he urged Clinton to take her case to the credentials committee. Well he also slammed those in the dem. party who wanted to uphold the rules as against the voters and how it was wrong. Yet he signed off on the rule, fully knowing what it implied. It's wierd how Hillary was in favor of the rule to not seat FL and MI until those states were what could hold her from the nomination. But I guess that didnt matter then.

Clinton to Suspend Campaign, Endorse Obama Friday
By Adam Nagourney

Updated | 8 p.m. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton will endorse Senator Barack Obama on Friday, bringing a close to her campaign for the White House, aides said. Her decision came after Democrats urged her Wednesday to leave the race and allow the party to coalesce around Mr. Obama.
Mrs. Clinton’s aides said she would “express her support for Senator Obama and party unity” at an event in Washington, D.C., that day. One adviser said that Mrs. Clinton would concede defeat, congratulate Mr. Obama and proclaim him the party’s nominee, while pledging to do what was needed to assure his victory.
Her decision came after a day of conversations with supporters on Capitol Hill about her future now that that Mr. Obama had clinched the nomination. Mrs. Clinton had, in a speech after Tuesday night’s primaries, suggested she wanted to wait before deciding about her future, but in conversations throughout the day Wednesday, her aides said, she was urged to step aside.

The news that Mrs. Clinton was ending her campaign was first reported by ABCNEWS.com.

“We pledged to support her to the end,” Representative Charles B. Rangel, a New York Democrat who has been a patron of Mrs. Clinton since she first ran for the Senate, said in an interview “Our problem is not being able to determine when the hell the end is.”
Mrs. Clinton’s decision came as some of her most prominent supporters – including former Vice President Walter F. Mondale — announced they were now backing Mr. Obama.

“I was for Hillary – I wasn’t against Obama, who I think is very talented,” Mr. Mondale said. “I’m glad we made a decision and I hope we can unite our party and move forward.”

One of Mrs. Clinton’s aides said they were told that except for her senior advisers, there was no reason to report to work after Friday, and that they were invited to Mrs. Clinton’s house for a farewell celebration that afternoon.

122. Clinton to formally endorse Obama (this Saturday)
Source: Boston Globe

... ‘‘Senator Clinton will be hosting an event in Washington, DC to thank her supporters and express her support for Senator Obama and party unity,’’ her campaign said in a statement issued tonight. ‘‘This event will be held on Saturday to accommodate more of Senator Clinton's supporters who want to attend.’’

‘‘She’s absolutely committed to making sure the Democrats win in November,’’ said US Representative James McGovern of Worcester, a member of Clinton’s inner circle. ‘‘She will do nothing that undermines that.’’

McGovern cited the intensity of Clinton’s support, particularly among women, and said that she had to think through the most effective way of getting her loyalists behind Obama in the fall. ‘‘Going out night and simply saying it was over would not have resulted in the unity that we all wanted,’’ McGovern said...

130. Yes, she's been treated terribly by Obama ...
The way he used her Bosnia sniper-fire whopper to go after her credibility was unforgivable - except he didn't.

The way he focused attention on the debts she was running up, and tying them to her obvious inability to be fiscally responsible was loathsome - except he didn't.

The way he pointed to her appealing to the "bigot vote" when she spoke about representing "hardworking WHITE voters" - except he didn't.

The way he congratulated her after every win, and praised her courage, her patriotism and tenacity - what a low blow. He should be ashamed.

It seems that you would choose a bitter "I told you so!" over the future of the nation.

Fucking pitiful.

She's teased this thing along way past the point of making any respectable sense already.

Do it already Hillary, and yes, all will be forgiven; but please do it NOW.

181. The way her campaign is egging a scorched Earth policity with followers ...

The guy on Stewart who said he was "Gay as the day is long" and saying he was voting for McCain is NUTS. Her people are egging her supporters to vote for McCain if she is not on the ticket. This is what is cooking her goose with party officials. If she keeps this up, she will loose every super-delegate pledge she has and she will find herself VERY alone an unable to get ANY legislation or earmarks passed. If she keeps this up, the Democratic PARTY will run her out of office in 2012.

132. McGovern's right on this one
‘‘Going out night and simply saying it was over would not have resulted in the unity that we all wanted,’’

If she's going to get her supporters behind Obama, there needs to be some kind of acknowledgment that she pulled out ALL of the stops in her campaign only in an attempt to beat a strong opponent, and not to ruin the name of a good man. She genuinely felt in her heart that she would be the best nominee, and worked and fought accordingly. However, now that Obama has clinched the nomination, it needs to be crystal clear that the success of the party is now her ONLY priority. She didn't work this hard to turn out so much support just to see them go to McCain. As far as the VP slot, she and Obama need to have a serious discussion about what he feels he needs in order to win. If he doesn't see her in his plans, she needs to show her supporters that that is okay. I know this is a LOT to ask given the tone of this primary season, but this would buy her so much political capital and goodwill because she could make a legitimate argument (obviously Obama will play a huge part, but he needs Hillary's help here) for claiming to be the one that united the party. She has so many loyal supporters that need to hear, in no uncertain terms, that "it's OK to move on. He's a good man that will serve us all well," and that it's not OK to go to McCain.

139. Saturday news dump...of course!
Yes, not just a "Friday night news dump", but a Saturday news dump, completely out of the news cycle when she knows most people won't be watching the T.V.

She can't bring herself to make a truly public concession. She has to work the news cycle to minimize her humiliation to the public.

What a self-serving bitch she has time-and-again proved to be.

Enough said.

God how lucky we are she didn't end up being the candidate.

Goodbye and good riddance Hillary!

154. Don't Hold Your Breath
I'd say the odds of this actually transpiring on Saturday are about 50:50, no greater.

Hillary decided, begrudgingly, to concede on Saturday because a few people who were disappointed with her defiant Tuesday night speech got to her Wednesday. It was a splash of cold water on her face.

All it will take is a few Terry Mcauliffes to get her ear again on Thursday and Friday and feed her the sweet words and fancies she wants to hear, and her campaign will be announcing that they are now "re-evaluating" and prolonging this nightmare still further.

I'm just saying that I'll believe her concession when I see it. And not a minute before.

160. HRC is trying to keep her DELEGATES . . . !!! ??? !!!
The only degree of uncertainty was how. Clinton is exploring options to retain her delegates and promote her issues, including a signature call for universal health care.

Do I think this is about her issues --- or about her issues?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/clinton

And is the PETITION drive to make her VP still going on????

I don't think we've heard the last from Hillary. It is painfully obvious she is not taking this loss too well. So she is going to "support" Obama to the extent it props her for 2012.

184. Official email from the Clinton Campaign:
I wanted you to be one of the first to know: on Saturday, I will hold an event in Washington D.C. to thank everyone who has supported my campaign. Over the course of the last 16 months, I have been privileged and touched to witness the incredible dedication and sacrifice of so many people working for our campaign. Every minute you put into helping us win, every dollar you gave to keep up the fight meant more to me than I can ever possibly tell you.

On Saturday, I will extend my congratulations to Senator Obama and my support for his candidacy. This has been a long and hard-fought campaign, but as I have always said, my differences with Senator Obama are small compared to the differences we have with Senator McCain and the Republicans.

that she's SUSPENDING her campaign and she is keeping her pledged delegates. She is SUPPORTING Obama, but she isn't ENDORSING him. It's still fun and games in Hillary Land. She has proven to me that she is not a Democrat and she does not care if we win in November.

196. Mort Zuckerman on MSNBC this morning
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 09:35 AM by progetto
He discussed Hillary's original plan to take a couple of weeks before suspending her campaign so that she could pursue the delegates. She was not expecting Tuesday's delegate totals and pressure from fellow Democrats to force her to suspend early.

More interesting was the comment that Hillary wants her name submitted at the convention for the nomination. Maybe she just wants to hear name submitted and bask in glow of what might have been, but it leaves open the possibility she's not really conceded.

Seems she could end this speculation by ending (not suspending) her campaign and thereby releasing her delegates. Give a wholehearted endorsement and start campaigning for Obama now.

208. I think the results would have been different if the so-called Big Dawg was
muzzled.

Neither Obama nor Hillary were my first choice, but she did get close and she did suffer because of the dog and because she wasn't herself sooner.

If Hillary "threw down" like she did Tuesday night from day one, didn't listen to Bill, and wasn't formula-based, then Hillary would have been the nominee.

now we will see if she give a shit about this country or the chances of her party's nominee, or if it's all about her. Up till the last couple months, I would have bet she would enthusiastically that she would be the greatest Democratic supporter of the party's nominee, regardless of if it was her. I hope I was right then.
