Bomb hits Pakistan Danish embassy

At least eight people have been killed in a car bomb attack
near the Danish embassy in the Pakistani capital Islamabad,
according to reports.

More than a dozen people were wounded. An embassy worker
was among the dead and three were hurt, but no Danish
citizens died, Danish officials said.

The embassy building and several vehicles outside were
damaged.

It was not clear who carried out the attack, as Pakistan's
main militant group recently declared a ceasefire.

1. Car bomb kills 6 at Danish embassy in Pakistan
Car bomb kills 6 at Danish embassy in Pakistan By Kamran Haider
29 minutes ago

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - A suspected suicide bomber blew up a car outside the Danish embassy in the Pakistani capital on Monday, killing six people and wounding 25, government officials said.

The blast will raise fresh questions about the safety of foreigners in Pakistan, even though militant attacks have dropped off since a new government came to power after a February general election vowing to negotiate to end violence.

Danish newspapers infuriated Muslims around the world when they published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in late 2005. The cartoons, considered blasphemous by Muslims, sparked deadly protests and attacks on Danish missions.

The embassy in Islamabad was temporarily shut in 2006 after violent protests over the sketches.

There was no claim of responsibility and while it would be premature to link the attack to the cartoons, one of which was recently reprinted in Danish newspapers, that possibility was being investigated, said Interior Ministry secretary Kamal Shah.

2. So sad to see this
Reminds me of the Van Gogh killing and threats against Rushdie.

Freedom of speech is, above all, a liberal value. I hope that the cartoons are published again in Denmark tomorrow, as an act of defiance. Liberalism is threatened by radical Islam just as much as it is under attack by Bush and the neocons.

Eight killed in suicide bombing targeting Danish embassy

No outfit has taken responsibility for the blast that caused extensive damage to the front of the private building in which the Danish embassy was housed.

But security officials said the attack could be linked to blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Mohamed published in Danish newspapers that had earned the ire of Muslim world.

7. Im no big fan of copyright laws, but in this case you might
want to respect Kurt Westergaards rights to not have this drawing thrown around at random. So far three people has been arrested for planing to kill K.W. and having this drawing go round the world is not really helpful.

9. 2 points
1) With regard to copyright law, if this isn't "fair use," nothing is.
2) "Not really helpful" to whom? I argue that this is about freedom of expression, and when violence is threatened, it's that much more important to defend your rights. Otherwise, the violent become the strong.

11. Fair to put Kurt Westergaard in more danger?
1) If you are making the point that you can get away with doing it you dont really need to invoke legal terms - nobody is going to stop you posting it here. But why is it "fair use" when you might hurt the artist or his family? Dont seem fair to me.

2) I dont think anyone is stopping you from making your own drawing of Mohamed and getting it published. That would be a gutsy move so please, go ahead.

8. Norway is also being threatened ( for posting the cartoons in the Norwegian papers )

Danish Embassy Targeted By Suicide Bomber. video

A bomb exploded outside the Danish embassy in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, killing at least eight people. Denmark's reputation in the Muslim world was tarnished after publication of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed in 2005.

imo, it's hard for them to tell the difference between Denmark and Norway anyway

My guess is that both nations look equally offensive to the religion of thin skin followers and very much doubt the Nordic nations will pull these out for sabre rattling.

14. Oslo ( Norway ) politician felt pressured by Pakistan's ambassador
Edited on Sun Jun-08-08 08:14 AM by ohio2007
A member of Oslo's City Council who was born in Pakistan but now holds Norwegian citizenship has twice been called to Pakistan's local embassy. Both times, Pakistan's ambassador to Norway questioned her political standpoints, and now Norway's foreign minister Jan Petersen has been told that she felt pressured
The two calls

from Pakistan's ambassador to City Council member

Samira Munir have raised eyebrows. It's highly unusual for a Norwegian citizen to be asked to meet up in another country's embassy to draft political issues with an ambassador.

"It crosses the line, to put it mildly, if pressure is put on our politicians," said the city's top elected politician Erling Lae. "An embassy has nothing to do with what a politician on Oslo's City Council may believe."

Lae, Petersen and Munir all hail from Norway's Conservative Party (Hoeyre). Munir has lived in Norway since the early 1970s and has been a Norwegian citizen for more than 20 years.

It seems a double standard that "our buds" the Pakistani's demand dual citizenship ? Maybe if you were born in Pakistan,(or a muslim country) they feel they can make personal demands ?

I'm sure this is an isolated incident......

Seems its only a woman being put in her place over womens issues.

16. Pakistan to ask EU to amend laws on freedom of expression
Edited on Sun Jun-08-08 09:19 AM by ohio2007
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will ask the European Union countries to amend laws regarding freedom of expression in order to prevent offensive incidents such as the printing of blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and the production of an anti-Islam film by a Dutch legislator, sources in the Interior Ministry told Daily Times on Saturday.
snip
They said that the delegation would also tell the EU that if such acts against Islam are not controlled, more attacks on the EU diplomatic missions abroad could not be ruled out.

Sources said that the delegation would also hold discussions on inter-religious harmony during its meetings with the EU leaders.

http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2008%5C06%5C08%5Cstory_8-6-2008_pg7_14

After the EU considers submitting to the threats demanded by those already negotiating the surrender of Pakistsan to extreamists, I can see those issues of flag design being brought to the surrender table in short order.

A discussion presenting alternative flag designs thats less hostile in appearance ?

13. Pakistan ambassador: 'Are you satisfied?'
Terrorism experts and Pakistan's ambassador in Denmark are linking Monday's terror bombing to the Mohammed cartoons

snip
Fauzia Mufti Abbas, Pakistan's ambassador to Denmark, agreed that the Mohammed cartoons, first published in Jyllands-Posten newspaper in October 2005, had incited Muslim anger and were possibly the motivation for the attack, which killed eight and wounded as many as 30.

'It isn't just the people of Pakistan that feel they have been harassed by what your newspaper has begun,' she said. 'I'd like to know if your newspaper is satisfied with what it has done and what it has unleashed?'

snip
Abbas said, however, that it would be necessary to await the outcome of the enquiry before drawing any conclusions about who was responsible or their motives.

The matter of the cartoons, she said, was something Danes needed to reflect on.

'Danes know that they have insulted people around the world by printing and reprinting the Mohammed cartoons, which were done in poor taste.'

http://www.cphpost.dk/get/107528.html

So

the ambassador determines it is the fault of the all the Danes to allow any criticism of Islam. Mayb the Danes need to appease them by running the winners of the anti Israeli cartoon contest conducted in Iran last year ?

I wish we could take our conservatives and let them share a small and overpopulated island with their conservatives. Then make the one person left after five or six weeks and make him a manager of a Wendy's somewhere.

19. Nope
The protests were a bit over the top.

I remember seeing a piece on CNNI, a fully veiled Muslim woman (living in Denmark, I believe) threatened to kill the cartoonist etc... on camera. Quite a bold statement/threat from someone is unwilling to show their face.
