Breach highlights dangers of outsourcing, need for solid risk assessment
02 June, 2008 10:53:40

The Times of India recently reported a case that will strike fear into the hearts and minds of information security specialists and C-level executives that support and promote the use of outsourcing for company processes and operations.

According to the report, the owner of an IT business process outsourcing (BPO) service provider has been accused of stealing information from Florida-based company Noble Ventures, and reselling it to their US-based rivals.

When Noble Ventures cancelled their contract for Web site creation and maintenance with Ahmedabad-based Business Bee Solutions, the company's owner closed his BPO shopfront and moved operations to his home.

It is not known when he sold the data belonging to Noble Ventures, but he used an American-based accomplice to sell the stolen information to Noble Ventures' US competitors.

6. back in 04 I sent letters to both Wes Clark (still a candidate at the time)
and Kerry about this kind of stuff. The credit bureaus use outsourced call centers for customer service and I gurantee you they don't go through the kind of employee screening we do (not that we are infallable). They could be hiring Osama bin Ladan's nephew for all we know. The code that is being written there could have any number of back door accesses being written into it and we won't know about it till it is too late. No one does line-by-line code reviews and it isn't that hard to do. Also, there is no telling what things are being copied down in hard copy and simply lifted out of the centers. Most ID theft is taking place in foregin countries and I have no doubt some of it comes from this kind of scenario. I guess when CEOs start having THEIR info compromised they'll start caring.

7. The "A" Level Execs, of course, don't care.
They are the ones who started such policies, not their underlings, and it's no skin off their finely-tanned noses. Identity theft is for the Little People. They deal only in cash and Krugerands, and occasionally bales of cocaine.
