BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military has reported a large explosion in the volatile region west of Baghdad and says there appear to be several U.S. and civilian casualties.
A Reuters cameraman in the town of Khaldiya, about 70 miles west of Baghdad, said he saw civilian cars on fire on Tuesday. Locals said a roadside bomb had hit a U.S. convoy.
"We are aware of an incident in the 82nd Airborne area, involving a large explosion," a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad said.
"Early reports indicate a number of U.S. and civilian casualties."

Nameer Mohammed, who said he was standing about 500 meters (yards) away when the explosion occurred, described seeing a U.S. military vehicle on fire after the first blast.
As more American forces came to the scene, another bomb went off, setting fire to another vehicle, he said.
In the confusion, the Americans fired randomly, he said, and claimed that many Iraqis were killed. This could not be immediately confirmed.
