Ted Kennedy Has Malignant Brain Tumor
Edited on Tue May-20-08 12:16 PM by YDogg
Source: MSNBC TV

"BOSTON (AP) -- Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has a malignant brain tumor.

Doctors for the Massachusetts Democrat say tests conducted after Kennedy suffered a seizure this weekend show a tumor in his left parietal lobe. Preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma, they said.

His treatment will be decided after more tests but the usual course includes combinations of radiation and chemotherapy."

343. Something YOU can do to preserve his legacy!
Decades ago, Sen. Kennedy simplified the copyright protection on new artwork. Prior to the change, you had to fill out a form, write a check for $10.00 and send it to Washington. A hassle!
Sen Kennedy introduced and got passed a bill. that gave instant legal protection, by putting that c in a circle on your original work, before the paint was even dry! The symbol is installed on every MAC computer; don't know about Microsoft's nag!
Now these Geniuses, want to change it, make it more work & NOT FREE!
H R 5889 was introduced by Rep Berman (D CA) YES A DEMOCRAT! and one of the co-sponsors is CONYERS! ( I told his aid he should be impeaching Cheney, or sending out contempt notices instead of impeding artists lives.......)
S 2913 is the Senate version, and it is well thought of by Progressives like Leahey! GOD! He's the Senate sponsor! Merde!
And the Professional Artist's Organization's opinion.

"In practical terms, then, what does this mean? It means that a woman in Vermont can restore a wedding photograph of her grandparents, even if she cannot locate the photographer to get permission to do so. It means that a library can display letters of American soldiers wrote during World War II, even if the library cannot contact the soldiers or their descendents. It means that museums can exhibit Depression-era photographs, even if they cannot determine the name of the photographer. "
IT MEANS, THE CALENDAR I DESIGNED AND SOLD AT CHRISTMAS, IF I HAD TO PAY $10. PER IMAGE ( 12) TO A NON ARTIST OWNING A DATABASE & MAKING A PROFIT OFF ME! WOULD HAVE REDUCED MY PROFIT TO $80.00, WHICH DOESN'T EVEN COVER MY ELECTRIC BILL FOR THE MONTH OF DEC. WHY SHOULD I EVEN BOTHER? I'LL JUST CALL SUSAN COLLINS OFFICE AND SEE WHAT OTHER GIVEAWAYS THEY CAN FIND FOR ME!
ENTREPRENUREAL AMERICA MY ASS!
Yes, please, lets talk about this in practical terms..... I would love to see the statistics on how many people have been threatened with copyright infringement for restoring personal family photos. While we're at it, how many have actually gone to trial, much less won?

Shouldn't these "concerned" Senators be working on something more important, like I don't know, something that is costing us a lot more money and actual lives... perhaps healthcare, or possibly a war? When a senator moves, its typically in response to money or an election (yes, I am being cynical but this is my soap box....). What lobbyist could possibly be interested in "Orphaned" works of art?

Whether or not the intent of the bill is to protect our "cultural heritage", the way it is written opens a massive loophole that I think is extremely harmful to artists.
CALL YOUR SENS REPS AND TELL THAM IT AIN;T BROKE SO IT DOESN'T NEED FIXING/CHANGING. & TO DO SO DISHONORS KENNEDY!

362. That c doesn't protect you at all. Trust me, as plaintiff in a copyright class action case.
I was a named plaintiff in the lawsuit filed by several major writers' groups against major publishers and databases that stole our work.

I found out that only people who have PAID to register works have standing to sue, even though all those writers' conferences tell you that your work is registered the minute it comes off your computer if you just put a copyright symbol on it. If you pay a registration fee, you can sue when infringed and are entitle to statutory damages even if you can't prove you were harmed. If you don't, you can only collect if you can prove ACTUAL damages (ie how much money did the infringement actually cost you).

In our suit, we included the nonregistered people and registered ones. We won an $18 million dollar judgment, but on appeal, the judge threw the whole case out because he decided we shouldn't have included the nonregistered people, who had no standing. So now the unregistered people will get nothing, and the registered ones have to start our case all over again.

Artists, writers, please DON'T listen to the advice offered above. It's well worth a few bucks to pay to register your works.

One more important fact. Although you can register your works anytime, even years after first publication, and collect some money for the infringement, it's much smarter to register in a "timely" manner within 90 days after the first publication. That way you're entitled to statutory damages of up to something like $100,000 per infringement without even having to prove you lost a penny.

You can register a bunch of works for a single fee, so smart writers register all their works every 3 months.

365. This from MoveOn.Org (and yes, I signed it, of course):

Get Well Soon, Senator Kennedy

We're sure you've seen the news reports by now: Progressive firebrand and champion,
Senator Ted Kennedy, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

Our hearts sank when we heard the news—-but if there is one thing we all know about
Senator Kennedy, it's that he's a fighter. And we're all here to support him.

We've heard from a lot of members who want to send their best wishes to Senator Kennedy
and his family. So we put together a card to let Senator Kennedy know that he's in our
thoughts and prayers.

Senator John Kerry will personally deliver it to Senator Kennedy, along with all our
comments.

Let's let Senator Kennedy know that the whole progressive community is with him during this
difficult time.

243. Yes, we all do.
We are all mortal in the end, and the goal is not to live forever, but to live a live one can be proud of.

I hope that Ted is with us many more years, but if not, he should know that there are millions who admire him and what he has meant for America. In a very real sense, he was one of the very few who stepped up to be counted when America faced what historians may judge to be the greatest crisis in our nation's history. That is the threat from the fascists who took over our government, using it to wage war worldwide and to extract all the wealth they could get their hands on.

There was a time when few were willing to stand up and call out the fascists. On a personal note, Ted became an inspiration for me. I had never really felt much one way or another for about him until the last 4 years. During these last 4 years, he has risen to a level of greatness we can never fully appreciate. He showed how to use backbone. While some of his contemporaries seemed unwilling to rock the boat, he inspired a whole generation of younger leaders, and they are now poised to take over. I don't think it is hyperbolic to say that the movement that Obama now heads could not have taken place if not for the leadership and strength of will shown by Ted these last few years.

This election is the moment when we pull America back from the edge of the cliff and make this a great nation again. We will do it for America, and for Ted Kennedy. I hope he will be with us to celebrate that victory. I know we will remember his crucial role in making it all possible.

173. An "N" of 1 is meaningless.
It varies. There are multiple variables to consider. We don't know the grade of the tumor, the size, the extent of spread (if any), the type of cancer (there are different types of gliomas), etc. His age is a factor against him, but beyond that, there are variables that may affect prognosis.

The diagnosis isn't good and his prognosis isn't good, but to suggest he'll die rather quickly from this based on one person's experience without knowing more is a mistake. He may, indeed, die quickly. Or he may not -- there's too much we don't (and likely the docs don't) know at this point to know that.

310. Even a young person would have a poor prognosis
With a malignant brain tumor, let alone a 76-year-old man. He is going to have to retire pretty quickly, and unfortunately, the best modern medicine can do for him is to make him comfortable. It's too bad really. His mother lived well past 100, you'd think that her children, the one's not taken by unnatural death, could hope to live into their 90's at least, but it seems that isn't to be for Teddy. He's lucky in a way though. At least he knows and has this time to spend with his family, to get his affairs in order and prepare himself as much as one can for imminent death. None of his brothers ever got that.

malignant gliomas almost inevitably return, even if completely removed, because of their diffuse nature. Median survival time is less than a year.

On edit: Source for survival rate, Journal of the American Medical Association:
"Malignant gliomas (World Health Organization grade III or IV) are the most common primary brain tumor, and their incidence is increasing over time. They are the second-most common cause of cancer-related death in the young-adult age group and are associated with tremendous morbidity.1 Despite intensive research, the prognosis for patients with malignant glioma remains poor. Median survival for patients with grade III glioma is 3 to 5 years and is less than 1 year for patients with glioblastoma multiforme (grade IV glioma)."

But your friend shows that some people DO survive.

142. This IS Very Bad News!!! In The Last Two Years I've Known FOUR
people who were either my friends or close to me die because of a brain tumor! I just commented to several people about this a month ago, wondering why so many brain cancers.

I lost my mother to Pancreatic cancer, THAT IS painful and hard to watch. She was only 67 and wasted away to 61 pounds before she passed away. I was around 2 people until the end and their behavior seemed to mimic Severe Alzheimer's to me. Severe mood swings and outbursts and very agitated due to the fact that it affected their ability to be mobile. Speech was almost impossible, but a knowledge base was there making it more difficult by not being able to communicate with others. Unlike my mother-in-law who will soon be 96 and living with us, her Alzheimer's has left her completely helpless, but she isn't aware of it. I suspect when you ARE aware of what is going on, the frustration level must be horrible for the person suffering.

My neighbor's son would scream all the time because of this. He was treated for pain, but it was VERY hard on the family. Initially he was operated on but it grew back and there was no hope. Their loss was devastating, but in he end they were relieved that he was out of misery. He was only 39 when he passed away.

The Kennedy's with all their wealth will always be remembered for trying to "give back" and help those less fortunate. Something severely lacking with BOTH the Bushes & Cheneys.

While I don't agree with the "behind the scene" maneuvers made regarding Obama and Kennedy's part in it, I most certainly wish he will recover, but I wonder if he will ever be able to return to the Senate.

No matter my thoughts, he was one Senator who worked "for the people" for most of his life.

56. In fact I had about the best cancer possible. I had a couple of tumors in my salivary duct.
My oncologist Said it was a slow growing cancer. In fact I had it when I was 25 and had it removed when I turned 60. Very slooooooooow growing. So being diagnosed with cancer does not have to be a death sentence.

92. Not the same thing, really
IMHO:

When someone is ailing, you wish them well, no matter how you feel about them. Or you stay silent.

When someone is dead, there's nothing you can wish for that person, since they're gone. It's not like they can get better. Or worse, for that matter.

And personally I don't believe that (for example) Nixon suddenly becomes someone you can't give your opinion on, just because "you don't speak ill of the dead". (it was amazing how restrained the newspapers were when Nixon died, as if he hadn't done a thing wrong)

So yes, Heston (or anyone else you don't like) becomes fair game when they die.

351. I agree with your distinction
I thought I was the only one who made it - but to me sneering and ill-wishes toward someone who is ill, is actually much worse than grave-dancing. Once a person is dead, they don't suffer - though their family does; an ill person does suffer, so that is worse IMO.

I had to turn it off. They have the Senator almost in the grave, and are speculating that because his colleagues are genuinely shocked and saddened, they must be privy to more information than the rest of us are.

Major Garrett (what a name) is so smirkily arrogant that it is disgusting.

But what should I expect from Fox?

197. The most despicable displays of hate...
...are coming from Fark.com.

http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=3617026 (if you have the stomach for it)

I confess, I posted something mildly light-hearted (and possibly a bit insensitive) at the outset... that's supposed to be the attitude of the website. The wingnut venom quickly became overwhelming... almost as if FReepers were arriving to show their true colors away from their home base. Fark is notorious for its general lack of class, but this is awful even for them.

Perhaps he will soon have his second date with Mary Jo.

Some of them, to their credit, are offering prayers and condolences.

Glioma's a bad thing to have. Only a so-so prognosis, and EMK is over 70. Maybe we should get together and organize to get him some token of our concern -- a bunch of decorative balloons, a teddy bear, etc.

anyone can get this at any age. My friend died of the same thing in her 40s and left two young children. She lived for 4 years, which was two years longer than the prognosis she'd been given.

T.K. was one of the first and the pivotal support for Obama's candidacy. I hope he lives to see Obama's step up to POTUS, a crowning glory for all the battles he has fought to protect the rights of the small people.

quoted:

and how very frightening and humbling.

With all the Kennedy family influence...with all the Kennedy family money...

none of it can keep at bay what may very well be an inevitable conclusion to this latest sadness...

I've always admired Teddy and most of the rest of the Kennedys as well for what they've tried to do for regular people.

It'll be a sad, sad day here in Massachusetts when he's gone.

88. I'm not going to let this put a shadow on his brilliant career.
If this is the end, it will be the inevitable termination of a larger than life character who exercised power on our behalf and was happy to do it. He began his U.S. Senate career in 1969. After forty-nine years in that office, he has become a permanent fixture and a major power-broker in the Capitol. While he never enjoyed the national prestige of his brothers, his power and influence over half a century eclipses them both in practical accomplishments. He lives hard and works hard and the people of MA and of the USA have benefited from it. One of the very first times I voted after growing up in central MA, I was honored to be able to be one of many that sent Uncle Ted back to Washington. We were not, as critics claim, dazzled by the Kennedy mystique. Rather, we supported him because we knew he was a lion and because we love him so.

I can't feel sorry for Ted Kennedy. I envy him too much for that.

as nothing more than a clown and a caricature, no one can ever doubt that the guy has been an absolutely BRILLIANT legislator for decades now!! He's managed to sponsor/co-sponsor and help push through countless numbers of bills over the years, often enlisting the cooperation of some of his staunchest foes from across the aisle. He's the kind of Senator you hope will never leave his position!!

My best thoughts and prayers to him and the rest of the Kennedy family... :grouphug:

but I can hope that his doctors do all they can to help him, whether thats beat the tumor or at least easy any suffering. The best thing to do is to think positive. This is not in vain. Maybe this will reinvigorate the importance of cancer research, maybe with the Edwards family and the Kennedy family at Obama's ear we can use the billions we are currently spending to blow up brown people to supplement the paltry hundreds of millions of dollars we spend on cancer research. That is the least we owe someone like Ted Kennedy.

I think he is such a force in modern politics, he has been around for so many years. Some Rethugs may jump for joy. Maybe it is different in my family because my parents are Republicans and my brother and I are Democrats, we have had to learn how to respect each other while still disagreeing on a lot of things. I felt bad when Tony Snow's cancer came back. As human beings we are are all susceptible to this terrible thing called cancer, Republican and Democrat alike. No one deserves to die this way. I hope he pulls though but the diagnosis is not good. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

The Leg. took that privilege away from the Governor. They thought that mittins would name a repuke if Kerry won the presidency. I just don't want him to die. I don't want Mittins to come in on a black pig to save the Commonwealth. He is too good a senator to lose. Maybe he can give his tumor to Mitch McConnell.

201. the reason there are so many brain cancers
This does not necessarily apply to Ted, as he is not of the generation that received the polio vaccine.

Here is something all boomers should be aware of, and it comes from a very credible source. It is fact, despite the disinfo that our government has put out there to try to obfuscate the issue:

Excerpt:

For nine years, from 1954-1963, almost every dose of polio vaccine produced in the world was contaminated with a cancer-causing simian virus. In one of the biggest blunders in medical history, nearly half the American population—about one hundred million people—and millions more in Canada and Europe, were administered this widely contaminated vaccine. When scientists discovered the virus in 1960, they named it SV40—an innocent-sounding, almost antiseptic appellation, except that SV stands for simian virus and 40 designates that it was the fortieth such virus discovered.

Like HIV, which causes AIDS, SV40 crossed into humans from monkeys and had its own dramatic consequences. Exactly how HIV leapt from monkeys to human beings is as yet unknown; there is no debate, however, about the primary source of SV40: The virus came from the monkey kidneys on which the polio vaccine was produced. At the time, scientists developing the polio vaccine and other vaccines knew that the monkey kidneys they were using were often contaminated with unwanted simian viruses, but it was assumed they were inconsequential. SV40 proved them wrong.

So yes, I, a boomer, probably have this virus and so do millions of others from the era 1954-1963.

Sorry, everyone, what could be worse than finding out about Ted? Coming to this thread and finding that perhaps you, too, might have brain cancer or other soft-tissue cancer in your future.

Here's the link to read more (and from where I took the above excerpt):

http://www.thevirusandthevaccine.com/readanexcerpt.html

And yes, our scumbag government knew and in fact a leading scientist (Dr. Mary) was killed because she was talking a bit too much. Here's a link to a new book that's just come about about it:

http://drmarysmonkey.com/

And yet another link, this one with video interviews:

http://www.themonkeyvirus.com/

The author of the Dr. Mary book said that there would be an epidemic of brain cancer and so he obtained the figures. Indeed, we are now seeing an epidemic of brain cancer.

Cher

p.s. and rest assured our government would never let anything happen like this again. That's why they're doing so much about cell phones when it's now been shown there's a link to cell phones and brain cancer.

:sarcasm:

219. They are more prevalent, and they don't know why. However,
they may be even more prevalent down the road. Research of the effects of long-term daily use of cell phones (over ten years) is showing higher rates of brain tumors on the side where the phone is held. This didn't show up in short-term studies of EMF effects.

There is also a brand new study out this week in Britain of thousands of people showing a link between cell phone usage and harm to children and pregnant women's fetuses.

Brain cancer is most prevalent on the side of the head where people use their cell phones.

Remember him, O Lord, in mercy, nourish his soul with patience, comfort him with a sense of thy goodness, lift up thy countenance upon him, and give him peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ted Kennedy is one of those rare individuals who not only survives difficulties but also transforms himself in the process. His brother Bobby was one; Anwar Sadat was another. Fighting this cancer is going to a rough haul, but from personal experience, I know that one must never give up hope. I am certain that the prayers of many people contributed to my recovery, and I hope you will offer your prayers for Ted's recovery.

245. My friend lived 12 years with a "malignant, inoperable" brain tumor; doc gave her 30 days to live.
She had 2 treatments: a proton-zapping treatment at Loma Linda Hospital in California, and an herbal therapy recommended by a Yale Medical School professor who said it cured his wife of brain cancer.

Our youngest children were born the same day. She was diagnosed just weeks later, given only a month to live. Miraculously her tumor disappeared completely. Doctors called it a miracle.

She regained her health fully, except for a slight limp, and was perfectly fine for 12 years -- until sadly she became overconfident and missed a routine checkup, so didn't realize the cancer had come back until too late.

But her baby had 12 years to spend with Mom and form many warm memories, and her oldest child was in high school by the time she passed away.

Teddy, never give up hope - no matter what those doctors say!

Or at least she have a good prognosis :-)
It was malignant, I don't know if it is the same type of course. But there's always hope!

Good on Kennedy, he's showed us all by his stand on important issues that the old Dems are alive and kicking. I hope he can fight this too.

His kids were under 10. He never got to see them grow up. And I mean we were close - we grew up together. Brilliant guy, super achiever, great family, fit and healthy guy.

I don't have tell you how grim the prognosis for this disease is. All we can do is support those who are victims, and maybe most of all their families.

I have a friend who has a brain tumor. She beat it once, with surgery, but it came back. It's inoperable, and she will slowly deteriorate. However, they're making progress with these things all of the time. Ted might live for another 5-10 years, with the right treatment.

317. Sen. Edward Kennedy has cancerous brain tumor
Source: Associated Press

BOSTON - Sen. Edward M. Kennedy was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor Tuesday in what could be the grim final chapter in a life marked by exhilarating triumph and shattering tragedy. Some experts gave the liberal lion less than a year to live.

Doctors discovered the tumor after the 76-year-old senator and sole surviving son of America's most storied political family suffered a seizure over the weekend. The diagnosis cast a pall over Capitol Hill, where the Massachusetts Democrat has served since 1962, and came as a shock to a family all too accustomed to sudden, calamitous news.

"Ted Kennedy and the Kennedy family have faced adversity more times in more instances with more courage and more determination and more grace than most families have to," said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. "Every one of us knows what a big heart this fellow has. He's helped millions and millions of people — from the biggest of legislation on the floor to the most personal."

Kerry added: "This guy is one unbelievable fighter."

Kennedy's doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital said he had a malignant glioma in the left parietal lobe, a region of the brain that helps govern sensation, movement and language.

324. Let's get a little perspective here. Many people die at his age. My mom, for example.
And, unlike Teddy, her life was devoid of the good health, wealth, and privilege that have made his a pleasantly irresponsible idyll up til now, that will provide him the best of medical care, and that will cushion however much or little time he has left.

A lot of us should try harder to grow up. Then maybe we'd stop treating the wealthy as though they are superior beings whose prosaic troubles are global-scale tragedies.

352. you might educate yourself on Kennedy's accomplishments
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/20/AR2008052002116.html?hpid=artslot

"His two brothers made the family's reputation, but it was Ted Kennedy, blessed with a decades-longer life, who worked with the nuts and bolts of government and politics to make things happen.

"On numerous occasions," added Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), now the presumptive Republican nominee for president, "I have described Ted Kennedy as the last lion in the Senate . . . because he remains the single most effective member . . . if you want to get results."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/20/AR2008052001570.html?hpid=opinionsbox1?hpid=opinionsbox1

Kennedy has been the most respected Democratic senator for so long that no one comes close to his influence. He has also been one of the most energetic, always prodding and pushing his colleagues, undiverted by any other political ambitions or concerns since his one presidential campaign ended in 1980.

On issue after issue, but particularly on civil rights, health care, labor law, Vietnam and Iraq, Kennedy has set the direction for his party and mobilized the necessary support.

Even when the cause seemed lost, that bullhorn voice summoned Democrats to battle -- and more often than seemed plausible, they achieved at least some of their goals.

356. Here's perspective for you.
His parents died at 81 and 104, so for Kennedy this is on the young side for a natural death. In spite of that, I'm sure the senator has a had a full awareness of his own mortality and has prepared for this eventuality.

His "pleasantly irresponsible idyll" as you put it is no different from that of many in powerful, privileged positions. What he has accomplished around that is becoming a leader of the Democratic party and an elder statesman who can take the unpopular position without fearing for his own career. That's much more than many who had the wealth of his clan. Does that make him a deity? No. Does that make him someone whose presence will be missed for a bit? Yes.

358. "who can take the unpopular position without fearing for his own career"
But what positions has he ever taken that resulted in a real benefit to us? None that I know of. And to call his time in the Senate a "career" is ...I don't know, almost a mislabeling. Certainly misleading, in that we usually think of "a career" as something that feeds the kids and the cats, not as a boutique way for some multi-millionaire to make sure the laws continue to benefit his class.

Let's contrast him with Dennis Kucinich. Kucinich's career isn't the playboy kind. He has always had to live on the money it brings him. Yet he took a position strong enough to get him canned and blacklisted, almost killed. If he never did or does another thing, he can point to Muny Light with solid pride. He did that. He alone did that and took the very severe consequences.

What has Teddy ever done, from his position of national power insulated by money, that is even in the same neighborhood as what that poor, unprepossessing, vulnerable, working-class nonentity Dennis Kucinich did when he said "No!" to the corpocrims?

359. Kucinich is a career politician too.
The difference is mostly about wealth and the attendant privileges which include no real incentive to live within the moral boundaries of those who can't buy their way out of bad behavior. To be fair about Kennedy, he hasn't acted badly in public in twenty years or more. During that same time he was one of the top deal makers for the party. A lot of what happens in Washington is compromise. When one's party is in the minority, getting concessions from the majority party is a skill of much value. Kennedy is general held by those in the know to be the senate Dem who excels in that regard.

Kucinich is also one of 435 members in his body of Congress and that fact alone dilutes the effect that he can have as a polit. He does take unpopular stands when he needs to get his agenda heard but he does suffer from it. As much as I would have liked to see him be the candidate (or at least one of the long time contenders) he doesn't have the whole package of oratory, public esteem, and support in Washington to make it happen.

Senators are more powerful based on their small number without regard to any other attributes. The senate is also full of millionaires, most from family wealth. That said, the Kennedy wealth started with bootlegging and local politics. Their business now is politics and they're very good at it.

361. Sure. I don't think I tried to imply DK isn't a career pol
But DK did something real. Teddy hasn't done anything real, to my knowledge, during his more than 40 years(!!) in Congress.

You can cite his "deal-making" skills as having perhaps kept things from getting worse during GOP majorities...but what can you possibly say in his defense about the years from 1962 through 1972? The Dems had complete control during that time: House, Senate, Presidency, plus the Warren Court. Yet he did damn-all. During 73-76 the Dems had Congress if not the presidency, but he did nothing. From 1977-80 they had Congress and the Carter presidency, and again he did nothing. During Bush One the Dems had both houses, but he still did nothing. His "deal-making skills" have come into play, if ever, only during the past few years - after the Dems squandered their inheritance by doing NOTHING for over 20 years. During Teddy's time we could have got single-payer, an expanded safety net, a network of public transportation (and Goddess wouldn't THAT come in handy right about now!), and single-payer education. We could have had world peace. But we have none of it.

Honestly, Teddy's record is tepid at best, given the cachet of his family name and the impregnable wealth that shields him. And "tepid" is me being charitable.

This huge outpouring of oh-it's-awful-how-will-we-ever-live-without-him is embarrassingly unmerited, if we care at all about the facts.

333. Pretty numb to everything these days
but this news just broke through and hit me hard.
I wasn't expecting to hear this as an update of his health when I got home. I'm a long time lurker but I had to just say something , something for this man.

Ted Kennedy is a hero to me, and is in my thoughts and well wishes, to say the least.

Bad news. As Barack Obama said, let's keep him in our prayers (or thoughts) tonight people.

336. Dammit.
How sad.

Absolutely horrific. Absolutely horrific.

My sister died from an astrocytoma at age 42. She had headaches and went to her sinus doctor. He ran a cat scan and they found it.

She lasted 14 months. Her illness & death destroyed my mom, my dad, and me.
We were shattered.

337. I read a story on this elsewhere earlier today. It is
worrisome I'm sure for Teddy and sad for his family and us all. Of course he is still alive, and where there is life there is hope. Perhaps he will beat it. I am not a medical person and do not know the odds. I do know that even long odds and doctors are often wrong. I've seen it up close and personal more than once. In any case, I wish him well. As challenging as it is, in a way it seems almost mundane for a Kennedy, especially one of advancing years. Historically, not too many of them even reach the traditional later years. It's a consequence I guess of being a risk taker and being willing to put it all on the line. The Kennedys are not perfect people, but who among us are? They are; however, and have always been courageous people. It is that kind of person that our government lacks today. Fond remembrances and best wishes to you all, Joe, John, Bobby and Teddy.

338. Does anyone know if Sen. Kennedy has NF2?

An acoustic neuroma is a benign, noncancerous, often slow-growing tumor of the nerve that connects the ear to the brain (8th cranial or auditory) nerve.

These tumors are thought to arise when there is a defect in a certain tumor suppressor gene, which normally prevents tumors from occurring. The cause of the genetic defect is not known. However, acoustic neuroma is often linked with the genetic disorder neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2).

339. When I mentioned the seizure to my dad
over the weekend (he's a doctor), he said a seizure in someone's later years when they've never suffered one before could be a sign of a brain tumor.

Let's all hope for a spontaneous remission and full, painless recovery. Never despair.

341. I still can't believe it..:(
I was both shocked and saddened when I saw this on the news this morning. I mean, I knew he was sick, but something like THIS? Even a stroke would've been better. :/ As someone who recently lost a family member to cancer, I know all too well what the Kennedy family is going through and can only hope Teddy's situation turns out better and that he can somehow beat this. He is part of the backbone of this party and is such an inspirational person in general....he would, no doubt, be sorely missed! :( I really hope he makes it through and will be keeping him and the entire Kennedy family in my thoughts and prayers!

God, I love the Kennedy's.

For me, It's really a sad sad day.

I long for days where JFK jr. were still alive, to run for the office and change the world in ways that his father tried to before they killed him.

:(

Ted Kennedy really gets it in a way that many people involved in politics just don't. It makes me sad that he will have to divert his energies just to survive now.
