Edwards to Propose $3B for More Nurses
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP)

Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards is proposing a $3 billion, five-year program to add 100,000 nurses to a profession hard-hit by overworked employees choosing to retire and fewer entering the health care field.

"Our nation is facing a crisis as more nurses leave the profession every day, fewer students train to replace them and those who remain labor under crushing workloads," the North Carolina senator said in remarks prepared for delivery Friday in Iowa.

Details of the proposal and Edwards' remarks were provided to The Associated Press. ---

1. My x-girlfriend is a nurse. In 1984-86 the hospital boards starting
cutting nurses aides. These little girls were left with complete responsibility to take care of the patients. Like trying to roll over 150lb to 300lb patients. She would come home with a sore back weekly. The pressure from management was unbearable. Many left the profession.

You can partly blame this one GOP Satan Greedy CEOs and Board of Diretors.

3. i'm a nurse and edwards is right to address this issue.
nurses are grossly overworked to the point where it's downright dangerous. we have to get people interested in the work and that's difficult when the reality of the job is so onerous. nurses can only do what they do best when they aren't running to keep up.

4. Another nurse here
Something's got to be done about the nursing shortage because it's a downward spiral. The more the nurses are stressed out and over-worked, the more they leave the profession leaving the ones still in the hospitals even more stressed out etc etc etc. Not to mention the baby boomers coming along to start getting sick and needing more nurses.

I wouldn't go back into hospital nursing unless it was absolutely the only option left to make a living. It's hell.

Good for Edwards for even thinking about something like this.

2. Edwards - down for the people.
What other candidate has even thought about nurses? Please give this guy a chance - he knows real people with real problems in the real world. And he has real solutions.

5. Edwards is spot on with this. In the Chicago area there is a bad nurse...
...shortage. This man just perked my ears up. My hat is off to him.
