Sen. Hillary Clinton swept to victory over Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama Tuesday in West Virginia's Democratic primary, in her quest to keep her presidential hopes alive.

"Like the song says, it's almost heaven," Clinton said when she came on stage at the Charleston Civic Center to claim her victory.

The Associated Press, CNN, MSNBC and Fox News all declared Clinton the winner within seconds after the polls closed at 7:30 p.m., based on exit poll information. Polls leading up to Tuesday's vote consistently showed the New York senator with a huge lead over Obama.

38. A big win?
Clinton pick up a total of 12 delegates in West Virginia (Obama 8, Clinton 20). She is behind in total delegate count by 167 total delegates (1885 to 1718 total) (286 to 272 super) (1599 to 1446 pledged).

Picking up 12 delegates with those numbers is a big win? What would it be called if she picked up 24, "A win of Galatic and Historic Proportions."

This does not seem correct to say this is a big win.

39. FYI: A win of 'Galatic' [sic] proportions would be something
of a Pyrrhic victory, I suspect, given Paul's fate after writing his epistle to the Galatians. I think you meant to write "Galactic" :)

BTW: I'm a big Obama supporter but got a chuckle out of your typo.

49. By the numbers on CNN.Com this morning 7% voted for neither Hillary nor Barack.
I assume the original candidates didn't have their names removed or there was a lot of write-in activity, but 7% voting for someone who withdrawn? Granted, most voted for someone who has no chance, so I wouldn't put too much stock in WV shares...

3. good, now she should drop out gracefully and save face with a win.
but she won't, will she?

she's going all the way to the convention and will continue to throw the kitchen sink at Obama in the most vile, negative campaign in democratic history. am I right?

thought so.

ugh.

6. Historical Perspective
The 1960 WV primary put an end to Hubert Humphrey's chances against JFK. Kennedy won big before there were polling data and exit polls.

8. Interesting!
But in 2008, WV is not putting and end to...anything it would seem. Obama is still winning and Hillary is still hurting her party.

24. Bravo! Those of us in the late primary states are excited to have a say for a change.
Those who contend that any candidate should quit early is sort of a slap in the face to those of us who have to wait so long to have our chance to vote.

31. How do the remaining states have any effect, honestly?
And I say this as someone who will vote on June 3 in Montana's primary. I would have voted for Edwards but now support Obama. All the late states can do is add an exclamation point to Obama's ultimate nomination. If Hillary were destined to be our nominee, she'd be ahead in all ways we measure that matter. She isn't and implying that suddenly her campaign has a prayer ignores all of the voters in this primary season who have ALREADY SHOWN THEY PREFER OBAMA. There are other key choices on the ballot among candidates to be made at the state and local level and my vote really matters there.

You can argue whether or not she is hurting the party by staying in the race, but I think she is weakening our chances in November by allowing McCain to run around pretty much unchallenged by the Democrats.

48. Maybe we don't but it is nice to have a chance to be something other than a rubber stamp
for the last one standing, whomever that is. I wish we could have the whole slate to vote on, like Iowa and New Hampshire did.

Being a late state feels kinda like being the runt of the litter. But since the contest has lasted so long, it's wonderful to see the excitement in the voting public - we're getting tons of new registered voters and most of them are going Democratic. Ain't that a good thing??

Especially since 35% of those who voted for her will vote for McCain in the general election. That's a huge chunk of racist Republican vote she courted. Yay for her! :eyes:

I can't wait until this primary officially ends and her career goes with it.

13. Wow!
What an upset. People in West Virginia voted for a white person over a black person. That's breaking news?

The people I know from West Virginia are racist. Granted, I don't know that many personally, but nevertheless the few I do know are all racist and are spouting the "Obama's a Muslim" line.

25. That's great and all, but....
To quote another thread...

HRC (20+ points)
Arkansas +44
Oklahoma +24
Not sure what final margin will be in WVA but it will be over 30-points. - Turns out it was close to 40% right?

Obama (20 + point victories)

Alaska +50
Colorado +34
Georgia +35
Idaho +63
Illinois +32
South Carolina +28
Kansas +48
Minnesota +34
North Dakota +24
Louisiana +24
Nebraska +36
Washington +37
Maine +20
DC +51
Maryland +25
Virginia +29
Hawaii +52
Vermont +20
Wyoming +23
Mississippi +24

And you'll note that 11 of those Obama victories were over 30% margin...
