Ron Paul's forces quietly plot GOP convention revolt against McCain
Source: LA Times

Virtually all the nation's political attention in recent weeks has focused on the compelling state-by-state presidential nomination struggle between two Democrats and the potential for party-splitting strife over there.

But in the Texas Rep. Ron Paul and his libertarian-minded GOP backers are collecting delegates at the local level and planning a revolt against Sen. John McCain at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul in Septembereantime, quietly, largely under the radar of most people, the forces of Rep. Ron Paul have been organizing across the country to stage an embarrassing public revolt against Sen. John McCain when Republicans gather for their national convention in St. Paul at the beginning of September.

Paul's presidential candidacy has been correctly dismissed all along in terms of winning the nomination. He was even excluded as irrelevant by Fox News from a nationally-televised GOP debate in New Hampshire.

But what's been largely overlooked is Paul's candidacy as a reflection of a powerful lingering dissatisfaction with the Arizona senator among the party's most conservative conservatives. As anticipated a month ago in The Ticket, that situation could be exacerbated by today's expected announcement from former Republican Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia for the Libertarian Party's presidential nod, a slot held by Paul in 1988.

That's pretty damn funny.

I LOVE that episode. The one where Captain Cisco comes back to that episode in a later version of Deep Space Nine is pretty good too.

Nice graphic

31. Suggestion: "Paulbots".
I have had political discussions with many people who have cognitive disabilities, who a) exhibit far more intelligence than Paulbots; and b) view the words "retard" and "retarded" as an offensive slur, almost like the N-word.

10. It would be hilarious
If after all of the Democratic infighting that we became united and the Republicans were in chaos.

I find Ron Paul amusing. It's really funny to ask his supporters why they don't like roads. They really don't pay attention to anything in depth, but it is fun to watch them in action.

23. Hey, the 18-year-olds at my son's high school all LOVE Ron Paul. All they know about him
is that he wants to legalize drugs and stop the war. And that's where they get off. That's all they seem interested in, and it doesn't go any farther or deeper than that.

They have no idea, really.

I swear, if he were the nominee I might just vote for him.

He tells it like it is, especially with our nation's creeping crypto fascism.

Could Paul take away Nader's nomination?

26. I don't, but I hope he causes trouble for McCain
The fact that he believes in what he says, and is against the status quo, does not make him a good thing. Many far-right movements got support largely because they fed on people's dissatisfaction with the status quo, and had leaders who believed fanatically in their own extreme viewpoints and were thus able to convince others. Paul is a right-wing bastard, who is against ALL government help to relieve or prevent poverty; thinks that people are not entitled to health care just because they need it (and he's a doctor!); opposes women's right to choose; describes the gay rights movement as 'heterophobia'; and thinks that the Voting Rights Act was a bad thing. Yes, he's against the war, on isolationist rather than humanitarian grounds - but so are the British Nationalist Party, David Duke and LePen.

However, if he can help to split the Republican party so that the Dem candidate can get in easily, then he will have his uses!

29. Health Care "Freedom"
1. Making all medical expenses tax-deductible.

2. Eliminating federal regulations that discourage small businesses from providing coverage.

3. Giving doctors the freedom to collectively negotiate with insurance companies to drive down the cost of medical care.

4. Making every American eligible for a Health Savings Account (HSA), and removing the requirement that individuals must obtain a high-deductible insurance policy before opening an HSA.

5. Reform licensure requirements so that pharmacists and nurses can perform some basic functions to increase access to care and to lower costs.

That's a beauty. Freedom to get sick and die bankrupt.

30. The kind of Health Care Freedom I am talking about is
the right to choose Alternative Medicine over Allopathic Medicine.

The right to choose Alternative Health Care in any treatment.

The right to use Vitamins, Supplements and Herbs without threat of the F.D.A. taking them away due to the Pharmaceutical Corporation's whims.

Sorry but that is much more important to me than what you're talking about.

and get sick and die just the same.

There isn't any complimentary or alternative medical practice (or herb or supplement) that I can't find in Portland, Oregon.

True, they can't make claims on the bottle or the packaging, but they're there for asking.

35. There's lots on the internet
that you probably can't get in stores even in Oregon.

The F.D.A. has been trying to shut down Herbs and Supplements for years, and is trying harder lately. You just won't see it on the MSM.
I wish our other Candidates would address this issue. I'd hate to get sick and be stuck with only Pharmaceuticals! :puke:

After all, the Pharmaceutical Corporations don't want anyone to get really well. Then they would lose $$$money$$$.

28. Ron Paul coupled with Barr might be a real issue for McCain.
I know a few of the local GOP guys are less than thrilled with McCain anyway, so it would not shock me if Paul and Barr together drain votes off McCain in the General. I expect that Paul and his people will make some noise at the GOP convention, but it won't go much further than that. I also expect that some of Paul's supporters will end up voting Barr as a protest in the General, because I am already hearing guys say they just can't stomach McCain and his stated economic policies. The ONLY thing that might make them tow the party line is the implied threat of a Dem win.

Worried as I am about the state of the Dem party right now, I almost think the GOP is in equally bad shape. (Not that I am unhappy about that, btw...)
