Sunday TelegraphActivists campaigning for the arrest of alleged Darfur war criminals are to use the power of Facebook and Google Earth to help track the men down. A new page has been established on the social networking site encouraging users to report the last known sightings of Ahmed Haroun and Ali Kushayb.
Mr Haroun, Sudan's humanitarian affairs minister, and Mr Kushayb, a janjaweed militia commander, were both indicted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague for war crimes a year ago tomorrow. But neither have been arrested. "The men are suspected of hundreds of thousands of murders," said Dr James Smith, chief executive of the Aegis Trust which set up the Wanted for War Crimes Watch List on Facebook.
Google Earth and Google Maps have been used to map the last- known movement of the two Sudanese suspects each wanted for more than forty counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Darfur.
The Watch List was drawn up with Kevin Matleuf, the creator of EnemyBook, a parody of Facebook which allows you to list your enemies as well as your friends. "When I saw that EnemyBook allows you to list your enemies, I immediately saw the potential for keeping track of suspected war criminals," said Nick Donovan, the Aegis Trusts head of campaigns.
