BBV:Pentagon e-voting plan 'flawed' (Pentagon is standing by the system)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3419775.stm

Pentagon e-voting plan 'flawed':The Pentagon has defended its internet voting system after a critical report recommended it should be scrapped.

Four computer experts who reviewed the pilot project said the risks of online voting could not be eliminated.

"It has numerous other fundamental security problems that leave it vulnerable to a variety of well-known cyber attacks," said the report.

The Pentagon is standing by the system, which could be used in November's presidential elections. <snip>

In the US, some seven states are trying out the Secure Electronic Registration and Voting Experiment, (Serve), system. It is expected to be first tested at the beginning of February in South Carolina's primary election. <snip>

They said ballots could be changed in ways which were impossible to detect, potential skewing the result in close contests.

More damaging, the experts questioned the whole premise of using the internet in the voting process. <snip>

4. I bet this is just a way to make things more efficient
Rummy and his D.O.D. eliminated the need for most federal intelligence Departments with the office of special plans (must of saved billions) when the wanted to deliver the (invasion)war on Iraq. I am sure they do another good job on the voting system :silly:

<"The American people understand that life is all about taking intelligent risks to gain meaningful rewards," he said in a statement. "In the high tech industries, if not in certain academic circles, we call that progress."

Sufficient security features are found in the SERVE system, Miller said, to prevent Internet-based attacks, like digital signatures and data encryption. According to Miller, the security, as well, as the extensive testing, should be enough to keep the SERVE program alive.

ITAA membership is made up of many of the DRE manufacturers attacked in the SERVE report. One of them, Diebold (Quote, Chart), was in the news recently after unsuccessfully trying to halt the Internet publication of security vulnerabilities found in its DRE machines.>
