Italy justice ministry bars Berlusconi fraud probe

ROME, July 24 ? The Italian Justice Ministry has blocked an attempt by magistrates to broaden a corruption investigation against Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, judicial sources said on Thursday.

The sources said the ministry had rejected a request by Milan prosecutors to seek information from the United States over allegations that Berlusconi was involved in fraudulent television deals with a U.S. company in the mid-1990s. ..

''Unfortunately these shameful laws are now working. What has happened is very serious,'' said Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, head of the Greens party.
