Dean collects nearly $600,000 in donations since Iowa

NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer

(01-21) 18:52 PST MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) --

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean has raised $590,000 since his damaging Iowa loss, his campaign reported Wednesday night.

He isn't the only candidate to turn their performance in Iowa into new campaign money. Sens. John Kerry and John Edwards, who finished one-two in that state's precinct caucuses, each took in tens of thousands of dollars over their Web sites within hours of the voting.

Kerry, of Massachusetts, challenged donors to help him raise $365,000 over the Internet on Tuesday and met the goal by day's end. Edwards, of North Carolina, raised at least $250,000 online by Tuesday evening.

Dean's new money, most of it raised on the Internet, may help him recover in Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, but also could be used to buy advertising and boost his candidacy in later states while he focuses attention here.

The man has enthusiasm, and any time I am looking to find someone for a job, I prefer to have a person with some enthusiasm. Unfortunately, it has been so long since any democrat showed enthusiasm, the RNC controlled media was able to plant the idea it is just anger, and many democrats believe anything they hear from the media. As I posted before, I will not give in , I will not go quietly in the dark as they would like but will put will put up a fight to save America. Any democratic candidate is better than the bush team, heck even a true republican would be better than the right wing fanatics running the show now, but I like Dean best of all, he has guts and willing to speak up loudly when every one else is timid. Screw the pundits, the media , and the RNC, it's America we are talking about here and I want a candidate that is not afraid to stand up and speak out to save it.

15. Probably.
The average donation to his campaign is something like $77. He hopes to raise $200 million by getting 2 million people each to donate $100. He might even do it.

8. Don't count Dean out
He's still got plenty of fire in him. Many DUers have already pointed out that the Iowa caucuses don't ensure anything. Clinton didn't win the Iowa caucus in '92 when he was an outsider. Yet he won both the nomination and the election that year.

From a historical outlook Jimmy Carter was the last Washington outsider who won the Iowa caucuses and went on to win the Presidency in 1976. Unless we look at the real truth about the 2000 election. Gore won that one big-time, but he was almost an incumbent in that race anyway.

More history here, interesting looking over the results of past years

Everything was thrown at that guy. The press never dug up anything on anyone except Clark - another scary prospect for those in power. Who would've guessed a former general would support gay rights? I'm not sure if I fully trust him to run things though. Anyway.....

It's all been so blatantly against the guy. He's starting to go a little cuckoo, but I hope he hangs in there. He and Kucinich got it all going. I thought Kucinich would've stuck with him a little more.

13. This focus on process may be part of what damages the Dean campaign
Or, it may give them a boost in the coming weeks if it works to their advantage. I just hope they're careful to focus on real voters and issues rather than just money and e-mail. NH is quickly looking like another disappointment if the new polling is accurate.

14. DFA finance chair say *one million* since Iowa
on the internet alone. Another Nit Picklering?

http://dean2004.blogspot.com/
A conference call was held tonight to rally supporters to get to New Hampshire and answer questions about the direction the campaign is going in.

US Senator Patrick Leahy, DFA National Finance Chairman Terry Learman and Vermont Chair Dashiell Flynn hosted the call.

snip>

When DFA Finance Committee Chairman Terry Learman joined the call he said in his 56 years he had "never seen a better campaign office--life charged situation" than the one he is seeing from Manchester headquarters from where he called.

25. They haven't raised 1 million since Monday.
"In the question and answer session, Learman responded that, since Iowa, "the internet alone has raised over $1 million. Fundraising has not dropped at all, and that number doesn't include the checks being mailed in."

Learman said that in one day this week $280,000 was raised."

If they raised 1 million since monday, then they raised 280K on Tuesday and 720K on Wed. Learman would be bragging about 720k and not 280k.

The million must be measure from some other point, but since the quote doesn't tell you what Learman actually said, we don't know.

I'd go with 590K on the front page for the whole week.

19. I'm done giving money to Dean
After his post Iowa pep rally where he nearly went postal I am unsure if he is qualified to be president. I was open minded before Iowa, but was intrigued by Dean's straight talk and donated several hundred $$$. I am going to wait until NH and other states hold primaries before I support another candidate. Dean does not have the temperment necessary to get my vote and I will be looking for another candidate to support in 2004.

22. My money...
I'm saving my money until the primary vote is over and then giving what I can to the nominee (provided it isn't Joe Lieberman).

After this bruising nomination fight, whoever comes out of it is going to need all the money we can muster to go up against Chimp-boy's quarter of a billion stash that will have gone unspent.

The ONLY good thing about thie primary fight is that it keeps the Dems at the top of the news, pushing chimp-boy to the back (unless he "captures" Osama) during the next few months. Free advertising and gives us the ability to bring new voters in.

But we'll need the cold cash come spring for the nominee. I'm saving my money until then, when it can help the most.

27. This is the last gasp of a once great campaign. He is a good man...
but he is now as toast as toast can be.

There is no way in hell he can bounce back from Monday night's debacle. It was simply suicidal. Maybe in 8 years people will forget. But not this year.

Dean did a great thing at a crucial moment in our history. Sadly, he was simply a John the Baptist, paving the way for the true Nominee, whoever that turns out to be.

Cousin Howard, we love ya. But it's over.

I wager he'll shut it down within 6 weeks.

His numbers are heading south fast and furiously.

They will never recover in this election cycle, because the primal scream video will stop him no matter what he does.

It's over. Howard is smart enough to come to that realization. That's why he'll shut it down himself within 6 weeks.

36. Go Dean !!!
The race is young, some of the candidates didn't even participate there so I am not going with the "tanking" biz.

People who win 1st place in Iowa historically do not do well later on.

As for the "postal" remark, Dean was being as enthusiastic as he possibly could for the people who worked so hard for him. I think you people who are put off by conviction and energy are just sad.

But I must remember we were the Puritans at the beginning and we still are. People express themselves like this all the time in Europe and no one goes around terrified and fainting from fear.

I was hoping not everyone was as fair weather a supporter as some on this board. If you are put off by "Dean's performance" on Tuesday, you'll be voting for bush by the time Rove gets through with whoever our candidate ends up being. I think there were a fair number of people just jumping on the Dean bandwagon because he was doing so well and now they will be jumping on Kerry or Edwards. But as long as his core support is there, Dean's be around a while. Dean-takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.

Just a couple of posts ago, I said it's over for Howard. But I'm watching him now in a town hall format in NH on CSPAN. He is magnificent! He has a cold, is hoarse, and he's the best I've ever seen him.

Every thing he says is succinct, accurate, well thought out, and often a thing NONE of the other candidates would say.

Howard has a grasp of what REALLY is needed in this country.

He's going to have to apologize for that damnable appearance the other night. Maybe he can earn a second chance.

He's just to good to let go.

I have admired many of your posts since I first logged on to DU, right after the 9/11 attack. To see you think that Howard's camapaign had "jumped the shark" pained me.
If Gennifer Flowers didn't sink Clinton, if imitating the last words of Karla Fae Tucker didn't sink the monsters in the White House, then a little overenthusiasm won't overturn the unsinkable Howard Dean.
I'm still donating and I'm going to double my campaigning efforts. If he's got it in him to suffer the slings and arrows of BOTH parties, we will have had a bloodless revolution in this country.

VIVA HOWARD DEAN!

I have heard people on this board say: Its ok to be for your candidate,

the intestinal fortitude that Dean has shown? Is YOUR candidate willing to
stand up to the media, RNC, neocons, hawks, rep-lites (reptiles?), and

I am with Dean all the way - even if I have to write him in come November.
