Breakdown Knocks Out Netflix Site

LOS GATOS, Calif. (AP) — Online DVD rental leader Netflix Inc. is suffering a technology breakdown that's knocked out its Web site, inconveniencing its 7.5 million subscribers.

The outage could mean some customers will have to wait longer than usual for their next rentals.

Company spokesman Steve Swasey says the trouble blocked access to Netflix's Web site about 7 a.m. PDT Monday. The site was still down in the afternoon.

Swasey says DVDs that normally would have been mailed Monday may not go out until Tuesday because the problem also has hobbled some Netflix distribution centers.

Netflix is based in Los Gatos.

I'm glad I didn't run around like crazy this morning trying to get my returned movies in the collection box. They went out this afternoon; if I get movies by Wednesday, I'll be happy, but I'm not counting on it.

3. I can't afford 'em right now, but I love the service when I have it.
I hope to be subscribing again sometime this year. I hope they get the problems fixed soon. :)

D/C it. I have about 50 films on my queue right now........

Been with Netflix for years now. I've taken a break on having the DVDs sent to my house. Now I just use the "watch online" feature. Good to know that the site's down temporarily.

14. Got a library nearby?
I live in Orlando. The library system isn't great here-not nearly as good as the one in Columbus or Cleveland-but I can still check out the newest DVD releases or order them on line for free-even Micheal Moore documentaries.

16. I've just started using Netflix
The down time didn't affect me as my returns were en route.

But they're certainly better than my local brick & mortar video shop (Hollywood Video). I noticed more and more films weren't showing up (especially my foreign flicks). Then I noticed mainstream films were represented with a small token number of copies, or not at all. On the other hand, straight-to-DVD rubbish was infesting the shop. I think some corporate genius figured people in the mood for a movie wouldn't walk out empty handed and grab the crap. And I suspect they're picking up the straight-to-DVD's for pennies.

So I'm happy and saving money to boot.
