bush* Says There Are "Troubled Times" in Parts of the Country

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2004/01/21/national1107EST0536.DTL

<snip>
The morning after he addressed a national television audience and a joint session of Congress, Bush flew to Toledo, Ohio to begin a two day swing that also will take him to Arizona and New Mexico to highlight his job training and counterterrorism proposals.

Ohio has been hard hit by manufacturing job losses and its unemployment rate has jumped from 3.9 percent to 5.7 percent since Bush took office. "There's no doubt that things are getting better," the president said. "Some people could conceivably be -- are being left behind" because they lack the skills to cope with changing technology, he said.

But overall, he said, "this economy is strong ... I fully recognize that in Ohio there are still troubled times." He also said that after two wars, "We're now marching toward peace."

Bush spoke at Owens Community College to highlight his $250 million proposal for new job-training grants channeled through community colleges

1. People are being left behind because they lack the skills?
I guess it is THEIR fault then. Couldn't be his.

5. That's right
In Bush's America, if you lose your job to someone in India or China, it's your fault- you must not have a good education or the right skills. Better go to the community college or just take the jobs ( Wat-Mart ) that are out there.:grr:

38. he's full of it
I just saw an article about a conference in NY teaching companies how to outsource! Outside were a few protesters, not many. The gist of the article was that outsourcing will continue at an ever increasing pace. These companies need to be punished for doing this. It has to be stopped.

13. Same tired old line pushed on us in the 80's...
My manufacturing job went away, and I was told "Get with the times, fella, RE-TRAIN!!!"

there was even Federal money to re-train me as a KEY-PUNCH OPERATOR! (woo. pee...)

My Great-Grandfather spent his life as a Machinist. My Dad was a Pipe-fitter his working life. WHY do *I* have to go back to school (for at least 10 grand) every 10 years or so to "re-train" when once was planty for them?

I got nothing against continuing education, just this periodic "forget everything you know and start OVER" bullshit.

17. Machining and the death of America!!!!
BTW,

If all the Machining shops go overseas, this country has NO FUTURE!!!! We cannot defend ourselves if we don't have independence from China.

This is the masterplan of the Right. They are setting up a super-state run by CEOs. Government will be powerless to stop them because China will be able to shut America down on a whim.

And these assholes keep talking about oil. What a joke. It's just another distraction.

39. Has nothing to do with skills,...has everything to do with politics!!!
"Politics" (which USED to be a good thing because it originally involved "problem-solving in the interests of all people") is KILLING this country. "Politics" (in its present form) = power + greed + irresponsibility. Unfortunately, that political formula I just cited represents a theory concerning human destruction. The present political formula devours humanity especially since the one postulate that can be controlled, "responsibility", has been unleashed.

I know,...I know,...

I am sounding off the radar.

I just believe that we have yet to control the weaknesses associated with human desire (greed/power) and the only means left at our disposal is the imposition of LEGAL responsibility. If we can just master the equal enforcement of a set of laws.

And pray tell me Mr. Bushwad, what skills will be necessary with changing technology? Looks like engineering and IT skills are fast being off-shored. I guess the skills that will be in high demand is how to flip hamburgers and avoid repetitive motion disorders!

8. "Changing Technology" = no more IT jobs
"they lack the skills to cope with changing technology"...

Many of the well-paying, highly-skilled IT positions require a reasonably narrow and well-defined set of disciplines, languages, etc. These are the jobs that have been "toe-tagged" with the "jobs that are not coming back" label. The Carly Fiorina "you no longer have a God-given right to a job" type of job.

The average IT Professional absolutely "lacks the skills" to make a lateral career move to, as an example, nurse or orderly in a hospital. Or the person who cleans the animal cages in the testing wing of a biomedical firm. Bush does not want to see these IT professionals left behind, just like he wants to see No Child Left Behind.

Sarcasm, you betcha.

But hey, teaching credentials are not that difficult to obtain, and if you were paying attention last night, he already gave permission to skilled tech workers who want to teach part time in high schools.

Happy days are here again!

:toast: :toast:

18. Overqualified!!!!

Yes, and the bitch is that anything not IT related tells you that you are "OVERQUALIFIED"!!!!

I did what the Free Traders told me to do and now I am unemployed. The nurses are next as free traders are importing more and more nurses from overseas. Often they are unqualified to do the job (as was the IT folks that preceeded them). There biggest qualification is their willingness to work for shit and their inability to change jobs.

34. "The nurses are next"
Interesting claim; any data to back it up? Judging from what a friend who recently made a career change to nursing has told me, the jobs are still plentiful and reasonably well-paying. Indeed, the nation's worsening health -- what might be called the Krispy Kreme-ing of America -- seems to argue for health as an, er, healthy sector. ;-)

It's healthy for now. But the globalists are actively working to flood that field with foreign imports as well.

Just search for "nurse" to find the relevant sections. They did this to software engineers. Now they are doing this to nurses. These assholes are trying to turn America into a third world country through outsourcing and insourcing.

Retrain??? My Ass. There is no category of worker that they cannot import. The safest bet may be k-12 education since citizens would have an absolute fit if they imported some guy named "akbar" to teach your kids.

12. Is this the same Bush*
who lied to take us to war? Who gave tax cuts to the rich and powerful? Who squandered environmental policies? Who gave the the big corporations the store? Funny how all of a sudden the "compassionate" side seems to be coming out now that the election is upon us. He seems to be reinventing himself on a daily basis. He is so superficial and shallow. How can anyone fall for it? We are doomed if he gets reelected.

35. What the Democratic nominee needs to say about this
"Many, many jobs are being lost not because Americans are underqualified or overqualified. That's a lie. Jobs are being redistributed for profit. Jobs are being exported overseas in order to make higher profits for the smallest segment of our population, the very rich, and to inflate the stock value of companies. We've seen it before, when we were all asked to work harder and longer for no more money. Then they called it downsizing. Well, the same people who brought us downsizing are now bringing us foreignsizing. You're being foreignsized."

Then he should say, "I'm Howard Dean, and as president I'm going to stop it." :-)
