Ottawa — Ed Broadbent is back in federal politics after winning a nomination Tuesday night to run for the NDP in the next election, nearly 15 years after retiring as one of the party's most popular leaders.

A beaming Mr. Broadbent hugged NDP Leader Jack Layton as hundreds of cheering supporters waved placards bearing his name.

"It is just thrilling for me to come back to politics," Mr. Broadbent told the crowd. "I'm working flat out all the time from now on."

1. love this quote:
"If they give us 40 to 50 seats, we will turn the Liberal priorities upside-down," he declared in his speech before the vote. "If they give us 50 to 100 seats, we will turn Canada rightside-up."

Layton's said, wisely I think, that he has a two-election strategy. This one is about vaulting the NDP to official opposition status, and putting in place a team which could be recognized as forming a credible government. And there is a very real possibility, I believe, of holding the Liberals to a minority government.

2. As we've said before, we are in a tremendous state of flux in Cdn politics
The landscape moves on a daily basis. I guess the next major event is the Conservative Leadership Election. If Harper wins, there'll be at least one more Tory defector (Rick Borotsik), likely two or three. If Stronach wins, it deflates the Alliance heartland vote, and we may find a couple of Alliance MP's quitting. If Clement wins, watch out for those flying pigs.

3. With Chretien out of the scene...
You are very right about a big change in Canadian politics. We'll see something not entirely unlike when voters absolutely punted the Conservatives out of power in 92...

I'm really hoping the NDP assert themselves in this election. Liberals with Conservative opposition would be a worst case scenario.

5. time to dust off the boots and get ready to knock on some doors!

Actually, I'm going to invest in my own unofficial creative signage and get a head start on the campaign.

Anybody interested in a little brainstorming?

right now I'm thinking some simple words first read here:

"GREED IS NOT A FAMILY VALUE"

or

line drawings of a man (martin) and woman (stronach) holding hands each surrounded by family business logo's (power corp and magna)being held up on the backs of workers, woman & child etc...

Not to far from stronachs Aurora ... I'm near Alliston (other side of the 400)
