Man arrested over Heathrow alert
Source: BBC

A major security alert is under way at Heathrow airport after a man with a rucksack scaled the perimeter fence and ran into the path of an aircraft.

The incident happened just after 1400 GMT on Heathrow's north runway.

The BBC's Ben Ando said eyewitnesses saw armed police officers surround the man and sniffer dogs sent in to check the rucksack.

A man is understood to have been taken into custody. No-one has been hurt in the incident.

It'd be nice to know that perimeter security was a little better than that, these days.

2. Security in UK airports has always been pretty tight
They probably had security beefed up if the queen was there, but the UK has always had tight security. They have wonderful PA announcements like "Would the person who left their baggage unattended by the check in please reclaim it immediately. Any baggage left unclaimed for more than 30 seconds will be taken by the bomb squad and blown up" ! Followed promptly by people dashing madly about the terminal to reclaim all the bags they've left lying around. I hated Heathrow, but that was entertaining.
