China sees conspiracy behind Olympics criticisms
Source: Reuters

BEIJING (Reuters) - China said the United States is unfit to present itself as a "defender of human rights" and a senior official accused Western critics of conspiring to use the Beijing Olympic Games to subvert Communist Party rule.

The U.S. State Department's latest report on human rights across the globe, issued this week, did not name China among the world's very worst offenders but said its record remained "poor".

But with Beijing due to host the Olympic Games starting August 8, focusing intense international attention on China's often harsh restrictions on dissidents, religious groups and disgruntled citizens, officials hit back on Thursday with sarcasm and their own accusations.

"We humbly suggest that the U.S. desist from posing as a 'defender of human rights' and pay more attention to the United States' own human rights record," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement issued by the official Xinhua news agency.

4. Ooh, A conspiracy to try to drive human rights
How terrible of the world.
A government should be allowed oppress their people, spy on them and incarcerate them at will. Just ask George w. bu$h and dick cheney.

5. Actually, having the Olympics in China is a good thing I think
.
.
.

It has given them an incentive to clean up pollution, if only temporarily.

Once they realize the benefits, they may be more inclined to reduce pollution on a permanent basis.

Meanwhile, China is not roaming the globe killing innocent citizens in other countries.

Oh,

Who is doing that?

Why it is them benevolent people from the USA doing their version of spreading "democracy"

What I see is death and destruction at the hands of the USSA

So I'm giving China a break on this

6. No they are not roaming the gloabe killing
They are doing quite well at home doing it. Also, I seem to recall they are one of the major financiers of our War on Terror in Iraq. So, they are not doing the killing per se, but they are reaping financial benefits from lending us money.

8. Splitting hairs.
China isn't doing it. They're a sovereign country running their own affairs. As an economist, I would add that "tanstaafl" is a little off the mark. There is zero-sum all the time.

7. China's right.
The US government has no business posturing as a defender of human rights while it slaughters innocent people in Iraq and Afghanistan. There's not a leg for the US to stand on in terms of global public opinion. This country needs to take a long look in the mirror and correct itself.
