U.S. says it pinpoints insurgent cells in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Jan 19 (Reuters) - The U.S. Army has put together a much clearer picture of the network of insurgents in Baghdad in the past month, identifying 14 cells which mostly operate independently, senior military officers said on Monday.

The U.S. military sees the resistance to the occupation as coming from several groups -- those loyal to Saddam Hussein, criminals, religious extremists and a small number of foreigners.

Military officials said a good flow of intelligence since the end of November had given them better insight into how the insurgency works in the Iraqi capital. snip

The officials said there were a small number of foreign fighters in Iraq, who might at times link up with Iraqi insurgents, but said the resistance was dominated by Iraqis.

1. Ah, ya, OK, "progress". How many times have we heard this now? It's
starting to sound like a broken record. I like this part, and what might that common goal be?

"He said the Army had identified 14 cells, with between 10 to 100 members each. While the goals of all cells both in Baghdad and countrywide were similar, there was only general cooperation between them."

Good intelligence, but have no idea who's behind the latest bombing.

One senior officer said that in suicide car bombings to date, former regime loyalists probably picked the target and financed the attack, while recruiting others to carry out the attack.

"At what point do those that had power and influence in the former regime stop fighting to regain power and start fighting just to create an environment of chaos?" he said.

At what point? How does NOW sound. :eyes:

14. "Targeting innocent people for political purposes",...
YUP,...I'd say that definition of "terrorism" includes those controlling the White House.

Interestingly, the National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism has recorded the fact that, in the last four years, acts of terrorism within the U.S. have been "home-grown",...by a margin of 23-to-1 compared to that committed by international terrorists!!!! (see http://www.mipt.org/incidentcalendar.asp )

So, what are these neo-cons gonna plan next, bombing certain "terrorist-producing" states across the U.S. of A.? NOT!!!

It's the oil, stupid *LOL*

3. "resistance was dominated by Iraqis" - well geegolly - whodathunkit ??
.
.
.
- Occupied by a foreign power, one that doesn't even belong on the continent, and the Iraqis RESIST !!

What an enlightened analysis that it is the Iraqis that are resisting . .

It should thoroughly disturb the American people that the Iraqis are coming to the conclusion that they were better off under Saddam

and Saddam was reputed to be a MURDEROUS DICTATOR ?

so

what does that make the US ?

well,

"Not Welcome" would be putting it lightly

15. Freedom Fighters? Whatever else you think of the war,
don't call these thugs freedom fighters. I can imagine that very few Shia'a or Kurds would like the type of "freedom" these guys have in mind for them.

6. Same kind of information they got in Chile before putting
General Augusto Pinochet in charge, 'eh?

Could Ahmed Chalabi. cough cough....

"In Washington, Team Chalabi is led by Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Perle, the neoconservative strategist who heads the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board. Chalabi's partisans run the gamut from far right to extremely far right, with key supporters in most of the Pentagon's Middle-East policy offices -- such as Peter Rodman, Douglas Feith, David Wurmser and Michael Rubin. Also included are key staffers in Vice President Dick Cheney's office, not to mention Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and former CIA Director Jim Woolsey."

7. Coming from several groups?
loyal to Saddam Hussein
DUHHH

criminals
Based on Iraq laws or US laws?

religious extremists
Extreme compared to US fundamentalists?
Which religious extremists are the extremists?
Is that wise to make that statement when trying to get them to all be nice to each other?

small number of foreigners
Do the Iraqi's consider these foreigners to be foreigners?
I bet they consider anyone that is white is a foreigner more so than any Muslim or Middle Easterner.

11. Exactly 14 cells?
If they really knew much, I doubt that they would be broadcasting these supposed facts. This seems more likely to be propaganda -

"Wow, there are only 14 cells, maybe 500 or 600 people. Shouldn't take long to smoke them out. Hail Chalabi. Hail Bush."

12. The only "pinpoint" would be the size of Bush's Brain
We should all feel better about this now I suppose. They have got them surrounded and will use a "pincer" maneuver and perform a "surgical strike" and get to those evil-doer "bad guys" "24/7"
who are responsible for "9/11" and threating our freedoms!
